That's a good one!

L J | 431 comments It was Steve West narration of Dumped, Actually by Nick Spalding Dumped, Actually that caused me to add the book to my KU borrows. It, like the other Nick Spalding books, is KU book that includes audio.
His voice sold me on audio of Iron and Magic (The Iron Covenant, #1) by Ilona Andrews Iron and Magic by Ilona Andrews. Perfect choice for the book.

Thanks for the heads up on Dumped...I got it for $2! It sounds really funny, too.

J. Daniels (jellendaniels) | 15 comments Thank you for your list L.J. I've corrected the Shane/Steve as well.

Mary (knoxdiver) | 222 comments For the record, Steve also does an amazing Aussie accent in Christina Lauren's Dark Wild Night.

message 206: by J. (new)

J. Daniels (jellendaniels) | 15 comments He did! I think the subtly is tricky. I notice narrators who can't exactly pull it off and it defaults to something more Cockney sounding. I liked Shayna Thibodeaux in that series too.

message 207: by Kelli (new)

Kelli Kay | 2 comments hi everybody! I hope I'm doing this right and in the right place. I really love Edward Thomas narrator. He does a couple Fiona Cole books and a handful of others. Just wondering if anyone knows of a fan page where we can see if he has more coming out? Or possibly he goes by other pseudonyms? TIA
Kelli~

Kelli, I went on Audible and could only find one other book with him listed as a narrator. Because his name is a common one, it was impossible for me to pinpoint him. Perhaps it is a pseudonym but one I can’t tie to anyone else.

Not sure if anyone else has answered this, but I ran across a book narated by Brooke Bloomingdale and it drove me crazy because I KNEW i had heard her before, but none of her books were on my list of read books... so a little cross referencing previously read books and I do believe i have figured it out, i believe Brooke Bloomindale is also Brittany Pressley!

If I am wrong please let me know, but check out some of her books (especially The Strawberry Hearts Diner
by Carolyn Brown, Brittany Pressley, et al. And tell me what you think.

message 212: by RajeanaP (new)

RajeanaP | 2 comments I think I'm going crazy, but every female narrator is starting to sound like Andi Arndt to me. Does she have any pseudonyms other than Elana Wolfe? Thanks in advance!

message 213: by J. (new)

J. Daniels (jellendaniels) | 15 comments I don't think she has, at least I haven't run into more than Elana Wolfe. I have to say I actually wish more female narrators adopted her style. She has a great range of voices and she doesn't have that overly affected voice some females (some male too) have. She has a huge body of work - so, you may really be listening only to Andi Arndt/Elana Wolfe.

I really love her work too, it's just that I have a hard time transitioning between stories when the narrators are the same or similar. So when I try to pick something from a different narrator but then find it sounds like her anyway, I'm starting to wonder if I'm losing it. Stupid problem, I know, just was wondering. Thanks for your fast response and cheers! :)

message 215: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (kestergayle) I find that I generally prefer male narrators, at least in contemporary romance. Female narrators like Andi Arndt are rare; she does great voices, pronounces everything correctly, and excels at pacing and inflection. So many popular female narrators drive me nuts; Andi needs to clone herself so she can spread the goodness around!

message 216: by TinaNoir (new)

TinaNoir | 57 comments That is how I feel about Julia Whelan. I remember listening to so something and she made her voice sound more aged (for a senior citizen) and also very young. And she does accents well. You really do forget sometimes it is one person.

I also like how Therese Plummer does male voices.

There are a plethora of female favorites on my list, including Andi:
1. Julia Whelan
2. January LaVoy
3. Kirsten Potter
4. Anna Fields
5. Ann Marie Lee
6. Hillary Huber
7. Brittany Pressley
8. Saskia Maarleveld
9. Teri Schnaubelt

And the list goes on for me. None of these narrators try to assume a dramatic change in pitch for male characters. They do a fantastic job of handling gender.

On the converse side, so many male narrators create awful female voices that end up sounding comical. You just have to explore.

You’re welcome! Some of them are regular narrators for specific series (Kirsten Potter/Detective D. D. Warren; Terri Schnaubelt/Mercy Kilpatrick, etc,). Julia Whelan & January LaVoy narrate a lot of Nora Robert’s books.

Oh! And let’s not forget Susan Ericksen who narrates the In Death series. I don’t listen to the series but group members worship her performance. I’ve listened to her narrate some standalones and she’s great.

I agree wholeheartedly with your list!! IMO, the Late Anna Fields is utterly peerless. And Kirsten Potter has a voice like hot buttered, butter. Also she is fabulous with accents. I fell in love with her listening to The Spymaster's Lady

I'd add Xe Sands and Johanna Parker as really good esp. with contemporary romances. Their voices are good 'rom com' voices.

YES!!! I’ve tried to describe her voice in the past and that’s it! Anna Fields blew my socks off with Rebecca.

Love Xe Sands, too. Haven’t listened to Johanna Parker so that’s good to know.

Kathleen Early narrating the Grant County & Will Trent series. She was utterly brilliant in the last two WT books.

Lol update: I had a feeling it was probably a Sarina Bowen book I might have heard her in (guys, I listen to Sarina's books a LOT), and I *think* Kyla might be Seraphina Valentine.

Apex (penelopeix) | 6 comments I thought I was losing my mind when I first started listening to audiobooks. So I had to start my own list of my FAVORITES to keep track!

Have to say it’s laughable writing under a different name is easy to disguise but with audio doesn’t matter what alias they use, it’s still the same voice and insulting to reader/listener to think we can’t recognize all of their very distinctive voices.

Also, only a handful have the skill to narrate all genres.

How is it one might lose their job for doing their job?LOL

Please correct me if I got any wrong below.

Mary (knoxdiver) | 222 comments I don't think it's a matter of losing a job or that it's an intentional insult to readers; I think it's that they like to keep some work separate. It's just like YA or kidlit authors using a pseudonym if they do romance or even erotica. Hardcore fans may figure it out, but it helps compartmentalize their career by keeping boundaries between different genres/categories.

It's probably a good move both in creating a working portfolio (ie Steve West can point YA authors/publishers/producers in the direction of his Steve West books without his steamier Shane East books in the mix) AND as kind of a stop-gap preventative measure for younger listeners.

Also, sometimes readers really cross boundaries. Sebastian York has a lot of really intense fans who love him because of his voice. I've seen some comments that are..... let's say "questionable in taste" directed toward him. It can be easy to form a parasocial relationship with someone who sounds like they're reading a story TO YOU, especially those that are sexy. Some narrators and authors are just more private and like to have a buffer between their personal and private lives. That's all.

ButtonsMom2003 | 1 comments I just discovered this discussion and I'm sorry to see that it no longer seems to be active. I read and listen to mostly M/M books but I also listen to M/F.

I'd like to know if anyone recognizes the voice of Mark James. doing a search for his name on Audible brings back all kind of other names. Here is a link to an M/M title. If I could find other work he has done I wouldn't care what genre it is.

https://www.audible.com/pd/His-Americ...

I have a few favorite narrators who have publicly disclosed their pseudonyms:
Joe Jameson is also Hamish Long and I think he is also James Joseph
John Solo is also Jack Wayne (I think for non-MM)
Joel Leslie uses Joel Froomkin for YA and non-MM books. He has stated publicly that he dis this so that young people searching for Joel Foomkin won't find his more explicit work when searching.
Michael Dean is also Michael Pauley. I think he is now doing all of his MM work as Michael Dean but there are still some Michael Pauley MM titles out there on Audible.

I read through this whole discussion and learned so much. Thank you to all who posted.
