Kathy G. | 1931 comments I have several books that I've gotten half through but have put aside to read other things or they didn't fit into this challenge---

How about re-reading and finishing a book we never finished for some reason.

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments I picked up Traveling the 38th Parallel: A Water Line around the World at the library today which is set in the Northern Hemisphere - read a book that is set in a country that falls on that parallel (US, the line between North/South Korea) and several others

message 53: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Or for the summer/winter dichotomy, read a book that's set somewhere on the equator (and thus both in the northern and southern hemispheres).

message 54: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments like the weather dichotomy in DC right now - it can't decide what season it is ;)

It's been gorgeous here in Philly--warm and sunny but with a nice, cool breeze every day.

There we go! Read a book set in a place where you'd like the weather *_~

Jayme Pendergraft | 762 comments The Tony Awards take place every year in June. Read a book that has been turned into a musical. This list might help: Page to Stage.

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Jayme VA wrote: "The Tony Awards take place every year in June. Read a book that has been turned into a musical. This list might help: Page to Stage."

THIS.

message 58: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments I like that one too (I think maybe the 50 pointer from a couple of seasons ago had a broadway option in it...)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 2062 comments Jayme VA wrote: "The Tony Awards take place every year in June. Read a book that has been turned into a musical. This list might help: Page to Stage."

I did a task about musicals (Rookie at the Top) a few years ago. It was kind of complicated, so this list makes it easier. I like it a lot!

message 60: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments I remember that one Karen - I think it was like my first or second season

message 61: by Shawn (new)

Shawn | 297 comments As a student, I always enjoyed choosing books from the summer reading list. Since this is the summer reading challenge, choose one or two books from one of the variety of summer reading lists out there. Possibly choose one larger, more traditional list to pick from, or allow each individual to find there own list and post a link to said list with the completed task.

message 62: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments I think the finding a list and posting could be interesting - you could then potentially find a list from other countries and see what they use

message 63: by Ty (new)

Ty | 563 comments I'm resurrecting this from the Spring suggestions. The 2013 Atlantic hurricane season starts June 1st. Read a book whose author's first or last name or a main character whose name matches any of the storm names designated for the 2013 season.

So read a book that relates to a dream you had...and explain the dream, LOL!"

I like your suggestion D.G. I own quite a few dream dictionaries and always love to help my friends analyze their dreams.

I had a similar idea last season. Read a book with one of your recurring dream symbols on the cover.

Here's a cool interpretation dictionary to learn what your symbol represents.

message 65: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments really simple, but SRC is all about love of books - why not book that has the word book in the title

message 66: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments Summer is the season for road construction/repair, so we see the appearance of orange cones or barrels. Read a book with a cover that is orange or has a picture of road construction equipment, a detour sign, cones or barrels.

message 67: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Haha Donna Jo ;)

message 68: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments Fly Away-

I want to go on vacation and "fly away" from here.

How about anything that flies on the cover.

message 69: by Ann A (new)

Ann A (readerann) | 1091 comments Back to The Tony Awards theme - read a play.

Jayme Pendergraft | 762 comments lol- glad you guys liked that idea so much :)

message 71: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments read a book by an author whose first name matches that of a tony winner (from either this year or last year) - or you could do it as a 2 book task - pick a winner's name...read one book with the first name; one with the last name

message 72: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Prince William and Princess Catherine are going to be welcoming their baby in July - read a book where a baby (less than a year) plays a significant role

message 73: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 86 comments Summertime is filled with backyard BBQ's. In the US, there are four main regional types of BBQ- Memphis, Carolinas, Kansas City, and Texas. Read a book set in Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, or Texas.

Jennifer, since the Kansas City most people think of is in Missouri maybe that could be included too. (Kansas City, Kansas is here too, and also has some great BBQ). That pesky state line confuses the issue.

Not a problem. Unless you're trying to find somewhere and you're in the wrong state. I'm still confused by Kansas City North and North Kansas City, and I've lived here for twenty years.

message 77: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments When I was teaching (umpty-eleven years ago) I liked summer because, even after taking classes in summer school I had time to read for pleasure. But the question was always 1) read a classic I'd missed out on, or 2) read a beach read. Pick one or the other.

message 78: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (deja05) | 100 comments I love going on roadtrips during summer so how about reading a book where the characters go on a roadtrip?

Or how about reading a book that is set in a country or place that you wish you could visit this summer?

Another idea is to read a book that has something on the cover that you normally take to the beach such as sunglasses/hat/flip flops/book/towel etc.

message 79: by JC (last edited May 08, 2013 03:41PM) (new)

JC (jmnc) | 638 comments Something with the letter U, which occurs in the months June, July, August? Title begins with, author's name contains, or....?

ETA: just thought of the sound of saying "U" - is contained in the words: you, youth, cute, pew, etc. As opposed to /oo/ which doesn't have the /y/ onset. I think this "yoo" sound is a diphthong, or is it just a long vowel sound....anyway lots of ideas using this as a springboard.

Peebee | 481 comments Donna Jo wrote: "Jennifer wrote: "Summertime is filled with backyard BBQ's. In the US, there are four main regional types of BBQ- Memphis, Carolinas, Kansas City, and Texas. Read a book set in Tennessee, South Ca..."

Yep, while the Kansas side has some OK BBQ, most of it is from chains based upon the KCMO side (except maybe for Oklahoma Joe's). But Arthur Bryant's, Jack Stack (my fave!), Gates...all based on the MO side and gradually spread to the Kansas side. And the famous Kansas City BBQ competition is at the American Royal on the MO side as well.

Peebee, proud Missourian....

(and most of what happens in backyards is grilling, not BBQ, but that's a whole 'nother discussion!)

Marty, transplanted Nebraskan in Missouri.

Peebee--LOVE me some Jackstack. I must admit I've lived here over 20 years and have yet to go to Aurthur Bryant's. I do like Gates' sauce a lot. But if I'm in a hurry and don't want to drive, Smokin' Joe's is close and will fill the bill.

message 83: by D.G. (last edited May 09, 2013 09:31AM) (new)

D.G. When I was a child, I was baffled by those movies where everybody was so happy the summer had finally arrived. I always asked myself "why are these people so crazy about the summer?" You see, the summer was never special for me because I lived in a tropical country. :)

Read a book set in a tropical country where it feels like summer all year round: http://www.hobotraveler.com/tropical/...

message 84: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments I liked the one we did this season with the dice roll and counting back numbers...could play with some tweaks on that...

use a base year of 2005 (for example) - or the year SRC started and add to the number for the random roll

could have people do a random number between the year they were born and now and read a book first published in that year

Or redo a task from your first SRC?

message 88: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 987 comments The National Hockey League are playing for the Stanley cup in June. In Canada we watch Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC) Read a book with an author with initials in HNIC. Or a book set in any city with a NHL team.

message 89: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 987 comments Summer months begin with J J A S. two j's. read a book with repeating double letters in the title and authors name eg The Passion by Jeanette Winterson. 2 ss in title 2 tt in author.
Or 1st Impressions bt Kate Calloway 2ss in title 2 ll in author.

message 90: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments We could read a book that has been on one of our friends lists for the longest time. The bottom 15 books or something. I know I have lots of books that I've wanted to read for way too long and never got to them.

message 91: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments I've been looking at other people's TBR list. I'd say that we should allow YA books (even if it says children's too) for the above task. Just whatever is their 15 books that have been on their TBR list the longest.

message 92: by Jayme Pendergraft (last edited May 10, 2013 05:43AM) (new)

Jayme Pendergraft | 762 comments The tortoise and the hare: slow and steady wins the race. Read a big book, 500 pages+.

Or read a book that's been on your TBR for at least 2 years.

message 93: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments The Black Tortoise represents water. Read a book with "water" in the title or with water on the cover.

"-Ist" a Hard Thing to Be ~ Read a book with the suffix -ist on one of the words of the title.

Black is commonly associated with death, at least in western cultures. Read a book where death is important or takes place in the afterlife.

Read a book set in a country with black on its flag or where tortoises can be found in the wild.

Questionable Content ~ Read a book with a question in the title

Wordly Wise ~ Read a history of language or a book with interesting etymologies for words or phrases, things like that

Summer School ~ Nonfiction book focused on a topic you're interested in, but don't know much about

Mythbusters ~ read a collection of myths or legends

message 94: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty Read a book that has only words on the cover.

message 95: by Bea (last edited May 11, 2013 03:30AM) (new)

Bea In honor of summer camping and telling tales around the campfire, LISTEN to a book. It can be an audio book or one read to you by someone else. It would be ideal if it were a book of short stories but I am not sure those are on audiotape.

message 96: by JC (new)

JC (jmnc) | 638 comments yes, there are some anthology and short story collections on audio. I listened to And Thereby Hangs A Tale recently, and Neil Gaiman has a few on audio that he reads himself and are quite enjoyable.

message 97: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 466 comments Tortoises are known for their long life, many living for 100 years or more. Read a book that was written before 1913.

Tortoises have rings on their top shell that, like trees, can indicate their age. Read a book with ring(s) on the cover, circles without a center. The rings can be drawn, but Os and 0s don't count.

Bitterblue (Graceling Realm, #3) by Kristin Cashore (key ring)
Seduction by M.J. Rose (necklace)
There's Cake in My Future by Kim Gruenenfelder (wedding ring)
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein (red circle around "Verity")

message 98: by Amy C (new)

Amy C | 78 comments In this challenge we had a task with memorable first lines. I saw there was a list that had books with memorable last lines. That might be fun.

message 99: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments less than a week to go until we get new tasks ;) whee!!

message 100: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 987 comments Find a list of books on listopia with a summer theme and read the # on the list that is your birthday eg: mine is the 22nd so would read #22 on the list
