message 1: by Char (new)

Char I am currently reading this one with a group of friends.
Is anyone else a fan of this book?

I am. I think it's really underrated when people talk about McCammon's best books.

Char I'm only about 25% into it, but I'm really enjoying it so far. :)
I think I read it as a teen, but if I did, I don't remember it.
I did go ahead and read The Fall of the House of Usher first, just to refresh my memory.

MaryJude Schmitz (mjschmitz) | 12 comments Love this book!!! I love the characters and all the tributes to Edgar Allen Poe. I have read this over and over many times.

Char I just knew some McCammon fans would pop in!

I am loving it too so far, Mary Jude! :)

Char That's cool, Lou! Thanks. :)

message 9: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne I am in! I will read "the Fall of the House of Usher" first. Thanks for the suggestion Charlene.

message 10: by Char (new)

Char Oh good! I hope you enjoy it, Jeanne! :)

Joanne Moyer (catwoman56) | 101 comments I'm reading it now too ~ it's one of the few I missed back in the day for some reason

message 12: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 86 comments I think that two of McCammon's most overlooked books are Usher's Passing and Mystery Walk.

Char I thought Mystery Walk was pretty good. Reading it now, it is easy to see how much Mr. McCammon has grown as a writer. I do agree that it is overlooked. A just ok book by McCammon beats a GREAT book by most other authors. :)

Usher's Passing, however, was just flat out great, I thought. I really loved it.

Joanne Moyer (catwoman56) | 101 comments I finished Usher's Passing too and it is now on my favorites list.
Amazing writing, amazing story, great characters ...what more can I say except for WOW!

it's beeen awhile since I read Mystery Walk but I do remember liking it. it's another to add to my re~read list

message 15: by Pam (new)

Pam Tole (pamtole) | 1 comments Mystery Walk was the first McCammon book I ever read. I found it in a used bookstore and it was so hard to find creepy books. I fell in love with it and McCammon as a writer from that book.

message 16: by Char (new)

Char Nice, Midnyte! I can't remember my first read by McCammon...but I think it was Swan Song. :)

message 17: by Lavonne (new)

Lavonne | 9 comments I'm re-reading Mystery Walk right now after many, many years. Only on page 74, its as good as I remember!

message 18: by Char (new)

Char It's great to revisit them, isn't it Lavonne? :)

My first McCammon book was They Thirst, which I read when it came out and loved. The next book was Mystery Walk when it came out, and it blew me away. I knew then that They Thirst was no fluke!

As I said earlier, I think both Mystery Walk and Usher's Passing are often overlooked by people, which is a shame.

Colin | 2 comments This was my first McCammon novel. Read it when I was 17 or 18. Stands out as one of a few novels that frightened me. I am 44 now and still, on occasion, see that damned Pumpkin Man out my window at night.

message 21: by Lavonne (new)

Lavonne | 9 comments Just finished re-reading Usher's Passing. This is the second time I've read it after many, many years. While I remembered the premise of the story, I had forgotten how wonderfully written it was and how the characters came to life (as in all his books!) Loved that he references a book in the local library that was found by Raven to have been written by Bill Creekmore! Wonder if Rick has ever visited the Biltmore House in Asheville? The Lodge sounded alot like a creepy version of that magnificent house! Wanted to start Gone South with the group but can't find my copy :( Would love to re-read that one too.

message 22: by Char (new)

Char It's nice to see some love for the older works of Mr. McCammon. :)

message 23: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberly_3238) | 99 comments Still trying to get to some of the newer ones, but the older ones are probably all on my "favorites" shelves---unless Goodreads deleted them, LOL!

message 24: by Char (new)

Char Lavonne, I re-read that one just last year, and I enjoyed it that time too. :)
