Hm, maybe pig milk is tastier than sheep milk? We're gonna need a nursing sheep, a nursing pig and a volunteer...

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments Well, we drink sheep milk, as well as cows and goats milk, and some people drink horse milk, but I've never heard of anyone drinking pig milk, so my guess is it's not so good. Of course, I could be wrong. I wonder if anyone knows.

Some cultures also drink camel's milk.

Immediately I thought of this Red Dwarf quote:

Lister: What kind of milk are we using now?
Holly: Emergency back-up supply. We're on the dog's milk.
Lister: Dog's milk?!
Holly: Nothing wrong with dog's milk. Full of goodness, full of vitamins, full of marrowbone jelly. Lasts longer than any other type of milk, dog's milk.
Lister: Why?
Holly: No bugger'll drink it.

Sarah (sdafergu) | 3 comments Loved the beginning story. I've been thinking about it for days after reading it. I didn't expect the twist whatsoever. I think that the people clean afterwards more or less as a way of laughing at all the people still stuck in the silo.

Wonder if anyone else thinks the books are called "Wool" because of the saying "pull the wool over your eyes"?

Reading the thread is fundamental ;^)

Thane | 476 comments Very busy, so reading slowly. (Though I'm trucking through the audiobook of The North Road.) Just got to the part of 2 (this isn't a spoiler) where they mention pigs. They do say pigs and other animals. Sheep would make a lot of sense. Smaller than cattle and a source for milk, meat and of course, wool. Sheepskin too. I like this book. It makes you think.

And yes, Sarah, you're right!

Adam Gutschenritter (heregrim) | 121 comments I am hooked. Holston's story has driven me to read this book to the end.

kvon | 563 comments I thought that cleaning the lenses was just something they did on autopilot while processing the new information about their beautiful blue and green world. And that this was part of the reason the IT guys did the 'by the book' repetition of the steps, even for Holston who already knew it...while the brain is rebooting outside, it would still follow the last program.

And I wouldn't immediately take off my helmet. Blue sky alone doesn't mean nontoxic atmosphere. The bit with only leaving enough air to clean and then walk away, that was a nice touch.
