question
is it just beacuse she's 14 that this is acceptable?

is it just beacuse she's 14 that this is acceptable?
people make her out to be this totally selfless self sacraficing hero. but she's not. ive never come across a more self obsessed character (she even tops bella swan) she only cares about how things effect her or how they effect what she sees as hers. and when she looks at people she only sees how they could be used to help her and what she wants.
and to be frank her i'm the mega nothing can stop me, i know best attitude pisses me off.
is it ok for her to be this self centerd 'cuz she's a kid?
any thoughts?

Do you remember what it was like to be 14? I think it's totally because she's 14 and has a whole lot of responsibility on her shoulders. No parents or real adult supervision or nurturing. Not to mention pretty cool super powers and the ability to kill monsters. If I had been in that situation at 14 I would have been a nightmare. I think Karen Marie Moning is going to develop her into someone we can love.
More worrying to me is the sexual situations that are inevitably coming in the next books. Will the author age Dani appropriately? Or will we have to accept a post-apocalyptic world where it's ok for 14-15 yr. olds to have sex with much older, immortal men?

I think Moning did a very good job showing a teenager who has been on her own for a long time, has a superhero complex and even though she thinks she knows everything she has no idea of how the real world works. That being said, while I liked small doses of Dani in the Fever series, a whole book of her was very trying and I actually had a hard time finishing it not to mention the older guys obscession with the very underage Dani was awkward......
Yeah at fourteen I'm sure my mother would attest to me being at least that annoying, and the only super power I possessed was a fearlessly reckless mouth.
I found Dani's antics and attitudes to be quite amusing. She was a 14 year old girl who had some very bad breaks in her past that treated the newly apocalyptic world she resided in like it was a comic book because it was the only way she knew how to cope and interact with others. plus lets face it many of Dani's abilities did seem like something a comic book hero would exhibit. I found Dani to be youthful, inteligent, vibrant and surprizingly optimistic at times. It was fun getting a glimpse of the Fever world from her perspective.
People who are going on about the age thing and the sexual references thing are taking this book as well as life a little too seriously and need to lighten up some in my opinion. Christian could not help what he felt (but did not act upon) because he was turning into a Death-By-Sex Fae Prince, Ryodan (and the rest of his pals) are never going to find women their own ages since they are all 100s of years old and hard to kill (remember) so his being intruged by Dani and willing to wait until she's old enough to explore having more is not as creepy as people are making it out to be and Dancer was just a teen-aged Boy.
So lets just calm down everyone get some popcorn and watch a nice black comedy like Heathers, Jaw Breaker or Teeth and then give Iced another go. And remember life is short, laugh more often ;)

Does anybody else find it a bit strange that Dani is quoting from tv- shows (Batman and Robin, Gilligans Island etc...) that are so old that I don't even remember them (I'm 28)?
Are we certain that Dani is just 14 years old? I mean do we know that she was caged by her mother only for 8-9 years? We can't be certain she is a seedhe seer- she didn't lose any powers after drinking Christian's blood.
Maybe I'm just in denial.

I think in some ways Dani is a realistic 14-yr-old, and in other ways not. Most 14-yr olds I know (and looking back to when my friends and I were that age) are way more boy-crush-crazy than Dani. She seems to be pretending she has zero attraction to Dancer even though she thinks he is hot. And crushes are the last thing on her mind (but that may be due to her current situation after the fall of the walls). Even at that age I remember being attracted to older men! Am I the only one?! But it seems that she mostly looks at Ryodan like a strange father figure.
I think KMM does a great job showing what a self absorbed 14 yr old is all about. I know,I have 1 at home right now. Dude is the first thing out of her mouth and she has little patience to see past her here and now desires. Bratty maybe but what did any of us know about being an adult at 14 besides we thought we knew it ALL. Im just curious about how she goes from 14 yr old to full grown women. Might be difficult to read the whole set if she is 14 or 15 the whole time and has to be all YA. I still like Christian and Ryodan, Ill keep reading to see what happens.
I have no problem with Dani acting like a 14 year old. I have a problem with 800 year old men and immortals, that I had previously found attractive, behaving/talking like pervs "grooming" her for a time when they WILL act on these thoughts.
KMM has focused her responses on the fact they have not 'acted' on the sexual interest yet, but the talk around her and the dominance/controlling behavior is over the line.
In part, the ewwwww that Dani voices in several places is felt by the reader too because the MEN are behaving like adolescents who are exploring their gender roles as adults as if THEY were 14. Even DANCER behaves more maturely than any of the men who is obsessively crushing and lusting after Dani.
While Ryodan and the other 9 may not age physiologically, this book makes it appear that they do not age in maturation level EITHER. There are NO mature, mutually beneficial relationships between men and women in this book. None. Mac and Barrons are offline, Jo is going along for the ride knowing it won't last (just like Dani does) - building a memory for her scrapbook. Whereas every woman thus far HAS taken Ryodan up on his offers, I believe that most do so because they think THEY Will be the one to change him or really feel about sex/love/relationships the way he appears to. If they saw or overheard the conversations/actions in the book (as the readers have), I really doubt the number headed upstairs would stay the same.
KMM has also said that Ryodan is definitely NOT Dani's father, but the way that all 9 have or had voracious sexual experiences, and the fact that Dani DOES have the same speed they do, it is NOT unrealistic to think one of the 9 IS her father or an ancestor.

dani has so many issues being 14 is only the icing on the cake she was betrayed by rowena her only living adult role model which in turn led to her murdering mac's sister, which ruins her relationship with Mac who she was seeing as an older sister for herself, she has a history of abuse from her mother, she is raised to battle a race that glorifies yet trivializes sexual relationships an area of her development she can't stop from happening but doesn't understand or trust even as it starts to entice her, she gets positive reinforcement from the one person she trusts....herself. can't really blame her but will be glad when she out grows it.
as for other comments bout the immortal men lusting after her i get the feeling that has a lot more to do with the promise of who she will become as much as who she is and their sense of destiny and soul mates, or in christians state the madness of his transformation feeding his impulses and physical needs.
the two main points on dani's age for me is she knows she has more growing up to do and she is doing the best she can when you don't trust anyone, and promise of sexual relationships rests on her doing that growing up while pushing and frustrating the characters it is also meant to leave the reader in a vague state of discomfort about that transition.

Teenagers in the 13-18 range tend to have an invincibility complex even without super powers. As others have said, when you combine that with a lack of parental oversight and the setting itself...
Dani is quite realistic, in my opinion.

It to a degree it makes it ok, but that being said the only reason I read this particular book was because I couldn't fathom giving up Mac's world. Dani is an irritating character. I just want to shake her. Her langauge is really hard to stomach. I would be interested to see how many times the word Dude, and Mega were written. It was hard going from a women (Mac) with a sexual appetite to a young girl who dreams of one. Why was everyone so obsessed with her like they were just waiting for her to be legal so they could take her virginity. That was gross. I would like these books more if she was a bit older instead of being the 14 year old girl, who acts exactly like a bratty 14 year old. I am not saying she didnt write a young girl well. It was just too much.
I don't know if it's acceptable, but I think it's understandable. Most teenagers think they know everything and wanted to be treated like adults even though they act like children. I think it's a confusing age all around, add in super powers and no real nurturing or parenting and I can see why she's like that. I probably would've been that way too. In fact, there teens that probably would've been a lot worse than Dani. Lol.
I remember 14 and it pains me to admit that if I had Dani's powers I'd have been as insane and annoying as she is, even without the extra emotional trauma and the whole Fairy Apocalypse thing she's having to deal with. I think KMM does an excellent job of realistically portraying Dani's character and I cringe at her only because it often hits a little too close to home.
I don't know if it's acceptable as I find it very annoying but it does show how young and immature she is. She thinks like a child but wants to be treated as a grownup.
I avoided this book cos I was not a big fan of Dani in the other fever books. That child drove me bonkers! I didn't want to read a book where she was the head POV.
So I finally broke down and read this book the other day. I was very surprised with how easy it was for me to read this book without wanting to pull my hair out. I think this is cos Dani, while still having her unique personality and voice, she was in fact alot toned down in comparison to the other books. And her interactions and what was actually going on at the time was interesting. Not to mention the other POv's that we get in the book help alot as well. So cos of this I was able to really get into the story. I couldn't put it down. It was a bit dark, uncomfortable at times, but overall I did like it.
I do hope that Dani ages with each book and that the developement of her character & voice is something that I will grow to love. I do see potential there since reading "Iced"
I am totally freaked out by Ryodan and Christian's "affection" toward Dani at this time though. And I hate myself for feeling this way but I totally fell for Christian's jacked up a** I'm scared to death of him but I loved him in the other books and inspite of all that's happening to him and what he's done, I still love him.

I agree with Estelle, Susan & Kelly. Yes, she is 14 and KMM does a great job portraying the attitude. And Dani has been through a lot. But we also have to remember a lot of it is a facade. She is more down to earth and even smarter than she lets on.
I personally took it as a survival thing.
She has to be this way because she can only count on herself to survive.
The Mega attitude, for me, was to remind us that she is 14 and only a kid, despite that she actually has been through so much already and that she needs to think as a grown up.
But that's my opinion.

I have to say that I loved the Fever novels, but without a doubt I cannot stand the Dani O’Malley series. If I wanted to read about a self-obsessed child (because that is what she is) I could pick up any book in the teen section. I was disappointed in the book, disappointed in the story line and really upset in the whole “romantic” lines of this book considering that Dani is really just a child. I am by no means a prude, but I feel that Moning took some liberties with the book that made me feel uncomfortable. That being said, I am still anticipating the next book in the hopes that I will finally get more of the story line between Mac and Barron. I feel that the Dani story line is really overrated and I wish that Karen Moning would write more about Mac and Barrons than Dani. Hopefully this next book will blow me away as I do love Monings writing style and books..
