Also, Charlie, for those who may not have the funds to invest, or may not be at the final, final stage of getting their "baby" out there, I find that having one or two friends willing to do a good read through to spot egregious errors to be a good first start in the process of self-editing. Then I would suggest approaching beta readers to take a look. Of course, this is not a substitute for professional editing, but it may be a good starting point for some authors.

Its always good to have either a professional editor, someone with editing experience or if you can do that have several people look it over..authors cannot edit their own books as they will miss and overlook mistakes..believe me I know! lol

I don't mind proofreading for an author that isn't too pushy with giving me some time to do it as I am always reading another book at the same time. But I do have to say, I've read Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and James Patterson titles lately that have had lots of mistakes in them. I would assume they have professional editors? If so then maybe they should find a group of friends to read their work too.

She has a flat rate of $200...for anything over 100,000 words its an extra 50. I think having someone edited cheaply will cut down the cost greatly. If you ever want a heavy duty edit.

Steven, I have noticed several famous author's books by traditional publishers having mistakes too. Not just typos, but blatantly breaking rules the rest of us have to follow or be rejected. I sometimes wonder if a publisher automatically publishes some works of those Biggies, without even reading it.

Yes, I've seen many bestsellers with glaring errors. Unfortunately I have learned the hard way that you get what you pay for. I would encourage everyone to ask for references and check them when you pay for editing services. It is well worth the time & money to get it right the first time.
