I hate giving up on a book halfway! If it's heinous, I will, but if it's just OK or so-so, I'll probably start reading it less often, in shorter settings, and start another book at the same time. And then gradually (and unintentionally) I stop reading the book. Unless I finish it. lol.

I sometimes push through and keep reading, but most of the time if I'm not feeling the book within the first 25-30 pages then I will stop reading it and move on. As someone previously mentioned there are just too many books out there to waste time reading a book that doesn't interest me.
I will finish it just to be sure I don't miss a slow burner some I just get through and gleefully run it back to the library never to darken my bookshelves again. But most books I read I don't have problems with finishing
I don't like leaving things incomplete,so even if the book is not that interesting, I try my best to complete it..

i just couldnt finish it cause the peeps in it were so stupid"People of Sparks got better at the end. I had a tough time with it too at first. I loved City of Ember though.
I can't really abandon a book... Even if I REALLY don't like it. I always have to finish it, and then give it a poor rating after it's over. :)

I always finish the book.

Most of the time I will even finish a series. There have only been a few that I wasn't able to plow on through.
I've only stopped reading a book one time because it was so terrible. I normally just grin and bear it.
Same here- I take a load of big breaths to gain the courage needed to get through the pages and once finished, just staying away from it! I only once stopped a book, which still lies on a shelf of my bookcase- I'd even happiny burn it (!), although I consider myself a book-lover and respect them. But this one, ughhh, surpassed by far my patience's limits. -.-
I make myself finish a book even if I don't like it. It definitely takes me a lot longer to read. Sometimes I'll read another book at the same time so I have some relief from the not so great book.
Usually I continue in hopes that the plot picks up. If not, time to move on. I had this with Vampire Academy. Worst book/series ever
If I start a series I always feel that I have to finish it. Its like this for me with the House of Night series. By book 4 I was completely fed up with the heroine that I wanted to toss her off a cliff
- but here I am a million books later & Im still reading them.
I just can't leave things unanswered - I HAVE to know how things end.
I try, struggle even, to finish it, but ultimately it leaves me unsatisfied whether I finish it or not. I don't tend to pick anything I really don't like, and the usual scenario would be that I start getting bored of the book quite a way in rather than disliking it from the start.

I do the same thing. If I dont finish it I feel like I am not doing the author justice. They put all that time into writing it. I can at least give them the courtesy of finishing it. Maybe it'll get better at the end? Maybe it'll make it worth it? If you dont like it, you can voice your opinion.
All in all though, just plow through. I am FORCING myself to read the twilight series. 2 down..2 to go. I'm hesitant to pick up the next one, but sooner or later I know that I will get back to it...eventually.
I'm inclined to finish-- it bothers me to leave something unfinished. But there are books where this inclination of mine ceases to prevail. And so I drop the book and move on to the next one in my TBR list :)
I learned along time ago if I plow through the 1st few pages most books do get better, some are boring because they are trying to give us readers a back story for the characters which is fine with me. But there are a few out there I just could not get past the 1st first chapter and in those books I put down and never read never will. But that won't stop me from picking up that author on another book later.
I think learning after a while going thorugh the book that you don't like it, only happens when you choose some books randomly and start going through it without researching for it beorehand. In fact, I have not yet experienced myself going through this kind of situation, as I choose my book very prudently. Right now I am reading "A WOMAN IN BERLIN" by anonymous. I think you all should go through this book -- this book is a real page-turner.
I try to keep reading in hope that it will get better. It must be really bad (in my opinion) to stop me from reading, for instance i could not finish Fifty Shades darker and that really upset me. I hate not finishing a book.
I do really try to keep reading a book as many times they do get better. I have my own 100 page rule. If the book doesn't get better by then, I scrap it and move on. Too many great books out there to waste time on one I'm not enjoying.
Most times I just power through (because I like to finish what I start), but it feels like a terrible punishment. That said, there are only about two books that I started, decided I hated and never finished. One was a sci-fi novel about a guy who travels to a distant galaxy to compete in some complicated game. I think around page 100, he still hadn't decided if he was even going on the trip! I just closed shop at that point. That was the first book I ever failed to finish because I didn't like it. I don't even remember the second one.
If I start a book, I must finish it even if it's not that great. I'll only stop if morality is compromised. I finish it as quickly as I can so I can move on to another book.
Then I'll tell all my reader friends to avoid the book.
I have to finish reading a book if I start, even if it is awful, the only book I stopped reading partway through was 50 Shades of Grey. That was not only awful but provoked my PTSD, that would be the only reason I stop. If something isn't great I usually just start reading another book at the same time
I cannot finish I book if I'm really not liking it on any level. It's one thing if the writing is really good, and the story sucks (or vice versa), because sometimes writing/story is enough to keep me going. However, if there is no plot/character development AND the writing is bad like in Twilight or 50 shades, I just can't force myself to finish.
Sometimes I will try to finish the book or keep reading it to find out why it got such good reviews...there was one particular book that I thought I didn't like. My sister in law told me to read the first hundred pages, so I hung in there and such enough, I did that and it ended up being one of my favorite books...I read the whole series...4 books. I'm reading one now I'm having a hard time enjoying, but will keep on and maybe I will start liking it, too, as I have enjoyed books by this same author.
I stick it out cause I not only bought it and spent money but i still wanna see how it ends. Usually some ppl or a lot of ppl talked about it so i wanna see y.
i can usually push my self on reading it. but it happens rarely. i don't usually buy books that i don't like. well, in any case i always finish and keep it then proceed to a new one.
I set it aside for another time. If after coming back to it there's is no fresh appeal, I'll give up altogether.
It depends. If I don't really like it, I'll usually ask for others' opinions or check book reviews. If the novel is that good, then I'll make up my mind to persevere till the last page to see for myself. If not, then yes, I did what I could. Poorly written or just plain bad books are a waste of time, and there are so many books out there waiting to be discovered.
I will continue reading it anyway. Or maybe I'll put it down for a little while and then I'll read it some other time. But most times, I try finish to a book even though I don't like it.
I've stopped trying to finish a book. I've so many others waiting for me on my kindle. But I usually don't post a review. Just because it didn't grab me didn't mean it wouldn't grab someone else.
I stop as well. usually I give a book a chance to capture ny interested till pg 100... if I pass that page and still its looking me to reaf it Thw book goes to special folder :) maybe someday I will feel differently about it (you know how reading preferences change with time and mood). I also have a lot of books I want to read so no time to waste on something I don't find interesting at the moment
I hate when that happens, but I always force myself to read it, even if the book seems really bad. That happened to me in "Os Maias", "The age of innocence", and "Os Lusiadas", and the truth is that I end up really liking them. Actually it was because of "The age of innocence" that I start reading classic books and I found Jane Austen, who is one of my favourite authors now, so I'm glad I did it.
And every bookas is one message if you don't finish the book, you will never understand it.
i usually still give it a try or sometimes fast read, like skip some of conversations. I remember some of the books that I really got bored but then I enjoyed it a bit a couple of chapters to ending. But then there's this one book Avoiding Commitments, which I really got pissed and bored but I still managed to finish it.
Its so hard for me to finish a book I dont like. Im finding it hard to finish Gone by Lisa Gardner. Most times I dont finish a book if I dont like it :(
I like to finish which ever book I pick , even if I don't like it because otherwise it keeps nagging my mind that I have left something unfinished . Its really hard to finish a book which I don't like but nevertheless I finish it.
I used to finish everything I picked up to read, but there are so many books on my TBR list, that I rarely waste my time with something I find really unappealing. Before I totally give up on a book, though, especially if it's popular, I ask people I trust why they liked it. One book that comes to mind that I did that with was The Poisonwood Bible. I really didn't care much for it in the beginning, but after reading it further, because of friends encouragement, I loved the book.
I agree with the opinions on moving on if it feels like a chore. It took me awhile to realize this. Since I have, I've enjoyed dozens of books I probably would've missed out on if I maintained my old philosophy.
I also used to be one of those people who had to finish a book regardless - felt like I was cheating or something if I didn't. But I've decided more recently that life is too short. There are so many brilliant books out there waiting to be read - why would I deny myself that for the sake of finishing a book I'm hating?
If i bought the book or if it was given to me as a gift, I try to finish it. Library books I will give about 50 pages.
I try my absolute hardest, and most times I'll finish it. But sometimes it's just so terrible, so awful, that I abandon it. Maybe I'll come back to it one day.
