I read Celibacy, a Love Story: Memoir of a Catholic Priest's Daughter by Mimi Bull
It is not a mystery, but an emotionally wrenching story of a woman discovering her past. Her father was a Catholic priest. Her mother, who "adopted" her, told Mimi the truth when Mimi was 35. Not until her mother died did she learn who her father was.
My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
It was a LibraryThing giveaway.
There is an organization, called Coping International, started by Vincent Doyle, from Connemara, for children of priests.

I can’t even imagine her shock. I get angry when people worry more about what people think more than how they treat people for the sake of religion.

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments My Solas Nua Book Club chose books for the next 6 months. We already are scheduled to read Modern Gods by NIck Laird next month. I will be rereading it. It is a story set in Northern Ireland and Papua New Guinea, including a cargo cult (https://www.scientificamerican.com/ar... ). The new books we selected are :
The Fire Starters by Jan Carson
Country by Michael Hughes - a thriller I am eager to read. He was in Armagh and interviewed with Jo Spain by Stuart Neville.
Night Boat to Tangier by Kevin Barry - a fantastic book! He'll be at Politics & Prose on Sept. 20th.
Sweet Home by Wendy Erskine - I was going to buy this in Dublin but restrained myself to save on excess luggage fees.
Belfast Stories by Paul McVeigh.
Being Various: New Irish Short Stories edited by Lucy Caldwell.

I order Belfast Stories and Sweet Home from Kennys. I have the other 4 books already.

Susan | 4707 comments I just added a bunch of these to my TBR pile. I had to laugh when I searched the Library site for the Michael Hughes book, I got back Guardians of the Galaxy DVD as a match. What?

I noticed a lot of these books are set in Northern Ireland. Is that what your club concentrates on?

Funny - someone else noticed that. Modern Gods was already on the list and of the new list I didn't remember Country was set in NI nor know that Sweet Home was. The organization likes to do stuff from NI as we get support from the NI Bureau here in DC which is kind of like their "consulate". But it was a member who is from Northern Ireland and had just been to Galway where she bought a huge pile of books at Charlie Byrne's who gets the credit:) Lucy Caldwell is from NI but the stories are by writers from all over Ireland. So only Kevin Barry's book has no NI connection :) And to find Country , I have to include the writer's name :)

Setanta Grannell (clauzy) | 5 comments Not Irish but I am currently reading Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower I, The Gunslinger' https://www.goodreads.com/series/4075...
I have been waiting to read this for years, but for some reason never picked it up and I think I am disappointed so far. Started off very good and I was flying through the pages of what is a pretty short book, but now I have hit an oak tree, I should of finished it a few weeks ago. Just hoping it picks up again, as I have already been gifted book II haha.

Lissa Oliver | 113 comments I'm currently reading The Perks Of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, which I'm finding difficult to read and even more difficult to put down! It was initially off-putting because I thought I might get bored by the narrator and story-telling method, but the intrusion into the narrator's soul is gripping (and hard) and I just can't put it down.

I read and enjoyed The Secret Guests by Benjamin Black
The premise of this book is that, at the start of the German bombing blitz of England, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret are whisked off to Ireland for their safety. Actually according to her Wikipedia biography, they spent this time at Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle is a formidable Castle. I took a visitor tour in 2016.
I recommend it to historical fiction fans.
Benjamin Black is the pen name of John Banville, who won the Man Booker prize for 1 of his books. My review, 4 stars,

I'm reading Sophie's World and Where the Crawdads Sing.

Sophie's World is an introduction to philosophy, but in the form of a story, I think of it as a philosophy book that wants to avoid boredom in the midst of it (that sometimes happens, even if you are interested in philosophy).

Where the Crawdads Sing brought me to tears in the first 20% of the book, but I am rooted to know what will unfold in the story.

Mahdi,

I read Sophie's World about 20 years ago and really enjoyed it until about the last chapter when it kind of lost me. My engineering brain struggled a bit with the more abstract sections.

It did inspire some investigative reading of philosophy in later years though, so all good.

Lissa Oliver | 113 comments I've just finished Emperor Mollusk versus The Sinister Brain by A. Lee Martinez and although I'm a massive fan and reading all of Martinez's books, this one didn't quite do it for me. It was one hi-tech battle after another and I found the backchat between the two protagonists a bit repetitive, it didn't really carry the story forward. For the same reasons I didn't hugely enjoy it, others will love it. I'm now starting his A Nameless Witch

message 6842: by Stephen (new)

Stephen McCarthy | 54 comments i have just finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. i think the books now benefit from the visuals provided by the movies. It has a wonderfully complex plot that gets resolved rather quickly at the end. i found it a little rushed. but the cast of strange characters and amusing asides are all there. there is a lot to learn as a writer from these books.
i enjoyed it.
