I got a Ken Bruen on audio once Headstone and I really didn't like. The plot was ludicrous and the main character detestable. I did wonder it that was the character that the film "the guard" was based on. I liked the film.

Susan | 4707 comments I really like the Pitt series by Anne Perry. I especially like the great aunt. It's so funny about different books appealing to different people. You've mentioned several times about how much you liked Behind Closed Doors. I loathed the book and it still bothers me. It's good to know there's a lot of variety out there.

Have you watched the tv series yet? I thought it was fantastic. Nicole Kidman was superb. I listened to What Alice Forgot last year but I wasn't impressed with it.

I copied it and have watched the first 2. Kidman is giving a great performance. Sort of a Desparate House wifes with an edge. It has a different emphasis than the book but I'm liking it. I don't think any of her other books lived up to that one.

message 6260: by Susan (new)

Susan | 4707 comments I loved the TV show. It had me on the edge of my seat all the way through. Kidman was terrific.

Lorraine | 152 comments The music was great too. I have that theme tune stuck in my head. I think I have The Husband's Secret in the house. I might give her another go.

I haven't seen The Guard but it does sound a bit like it was based on Ken Bruen's character alright! I like the style of Bruen's writing but just not the character of Jack Taylor.

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments reading Solar Bones at the moment

don't like to judge too quickly, but after 5 pages and already felt like it was a two or three star,
few more pages and was considering adding it to the abandoned shelf
really struggled with the structure, one long sentence with an occasional comma or line break. could feel my attention drifting down the page, looking for a resting point.
anyway, something clicked, 50 pages in, have gotten into the flow :)

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Illuminae Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman . Only 120 pages and already telling people they should probably read this for fun. It's summer blockbuster style.

message 6268: by Susan (new)

Susan | 4707 comments I'm confused. When I clicked on the link it said it was 599 pages not 120. Am I doing something wrong?

message 6269: by Colleen (new)

Colleen | 1205 comments No I think Maria means she has only read 130 pages and she already liked it

message 6270: by Maria Hill (new)

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Sorry yes (that was confusing), I am now 158 pages in (which is about 25%) and I really like it. I kept showing it to random people in work so they could appreciate how well made as an object the book is. They are very kind to put up with me :)

I recommend it as an option when we get to the Sci Fi section of the genre challenge. I believe it's now easily available in libraries. It's not a long read even at 600 pages as some pages contain say a single word and others are pictures of the casualty list etc.

message 6271: by Paul (new)

Bookworm with Kids Sherry wrote: "I wish book adaptions would actually follow the books. They rarely do."

I think there are very few occasions when an adaptation can deviate from the book, yet so many do. The one I am thinking of is The Bourne Identity - the recent adaptation for the screen with Matt Damon. I feel that this had to be brought more up to date than the book as the world of spycraft has changed hugely since Robert Ludlum wrote it. Mostly however it's a case of 'has the same name as the book but that's where the similarity ends!'

message 6282: by pauline_nlp (new)

pauline_nlp (noircirlespages) Hi everyone ! It's been a while I didn't write here, and yet I like much to discuss about my readings. With school, I did not read much any more and, when that arrived to me, I did not speak about it, or didn't even succeed to think something concrete of it. Now that I am on holiday, I already almost read two books. I go back in the race as I like to say it with my sister, I reappear, I take again taste with the reading and the discussion. And by reading the second book, I wanted to return to discuss readings with you, as with friends whom I did not see for a long time.

My current reading is " Norwegian Wood" written by Haruki MURAKAMI, which title is "La Ballade de l'impossible" in French. It remains to me only 35 pages. I liked this history much and so to speak, I devoured it, literally. I wanted to know what it was going to occur, absolutely. I think that this book is a favorite, but I think nevertheless that the whole seems rather flat, a rather monotonous tone...

Did you already read this novel or a book of Murakami ? I really fall in love with his writing, as well poetic as realistic, concrete. Nature, music, literature, feelings, questionings... I really like it, and coming impatient to finish it today !

Have a nice day :D
-Pauline

Colleen | 1205 comments I just finished The Dynamite Room and I really liked it. It's a very unusual novel about WW2. Two main characters ,one English girl the other a German soldier and many flashbacks of their lives before the War. I think it was a powerful novel about human emotion and what drives people and the ripple effect.

Frank McAdam | 73 comments I just finished reading In Search of Ancient Ireland: The Origins of the Irish from Neolithic Times to the Coming of the English and enjoyed it very much. It was published as a companion volume to a PBS documentary and so is easy reading. I hate to admit it but, even though I have Irish citizenship, I never knew very much about the country's early history until now.
