Margo I'm reading Einstein's Dreams on my kindle but I think it's one I'll have to buy on paper as I will probably revisit it often.
It's a series of short essays based on dreams that Einstein had that led to him formulating his famous theory. It is full of ideas and philosophies and is both beautiful and thought provoking. It reads like poetry and is full of beauty and creativity. It's a reminder of how short and fragile life is and of the impermanence of all things. Big thinking portrayed in very simple language.

I've just written 4 sentences in a row beginning with "it's" LOL

Paul That sounds odd and interesting.

message 6053: by Margo (new)

Margo It's both Paul. I've never read anything quite like it :-)

message 6054: by Margo (new)

Margo I'm actually sorry I didn't choose it as my classics read in your challenge.

Trelawn Just read the blurb there, it's sounds fascinating. I've never heard of it or the author.

Nor had I. It's a transaction. I think it's kind of a hidden gem.

Paul May keep an eye out for it. :-)

pauline_nlp (noircirlespages) Hi everyone ! I'm back here, and I'm currently reading a book, that I wanted to read so much next year....and it is.... Fahrenheit 451. I'm enjoying it for the moment. Anyone else had already read it here ? Please, tell me so we can exchange ^^
Have a nice day !
-Pauline

message 6061: by Margo (new)

Margo It has been nominated for our Jan group read!

I am keen to try it though I'm usually disappointed with Bradbury. His ideas were wonderful and every now and then he constructs a beautiful sentence but in general I'm not a fan of his writing style.

message 6062: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina hi Pauline, I have read Fahrenheit. it's an excellent book, hope your enjoying it

planning to not spend much time online in next week, if you celebrate Christmas, hope you have a good one.

If I didnt have kids I probably wouldn't have read or seen Harry Potter. There are quite a few books I'd have missed out on if I didnt read what they read. All genres are fun. I love a good YA book too!

message 6072: by Bookworm with Kids (last edited Dec 28, 2016 08:11AM) (new)

Bookworm with Kids I was wondering if anyone has read The Thief Taker by C.S. Quinn? It is on sale on Amazon Kindle at the moment but the blurb for it sounds like the exact same story as Plague by C.C. Humphreys that we read in October. It may be just a coincidence but the second book in her series is calledFire Catcher. Now I know that these are the two major events in that period of history but again, the blurb sounds so similar to C.C. Humphreys . If anyone has read both of these books, I was wondering what they thought - are they in fact very similar (or the same?) stories? I read the reviews for The Thief Taker and they don't sound too enthusiastic - and they were from people who were given the book to review!

Quix. | 17 comments I've just finished reading The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson ( late to the party, I know ) and it really struck a chord. I loved it. It was a quick read too at only 340-ish pages. I had it devoured in two days.

I've just opened up A Casual Vacancy by J.K Rowling ( I seem to have a thing for starting popular books years after they've been proclaimed ) and so far so good. Well, as good as any prologue can make me feel!

I haven't read it, though saw the film. I'll put it on my list. I also had le Carre's memoir 'The Pigeon Tunnel' for Christmas so will be in to that shortly.

That was one of Le Carre's earliest books, and I've always thought it was his best. It stripped away all the false romance of the spy genre and instead gave a really chilling portrait of a burnt out operative who's lost all his illusions. It reminded me of Graham Greene's best novels.

I'm going to be working on two challenges in 2017.

A Daily Plan For Reading All of Shakespeare in a Year

Book Riot's 2017 Read Harder Challenge (This one will hopefully have some cross-over potential with the GRI genre challenge).

message 6084: by Myra (new)

Myra (myrajoyce) I just started A Piano In The Pyrenees: The Ups and Downs of an Englishman in the French Mountains by Tony Hawks for the 2017 Genre Challenge.

message 6085: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Many books in progress, three specifically Irish: Francis Stuart's Black List Section H; Anthony Cronin's Dead as Doornails; Margaret Brew's Chronicles of Castle Cloyne. The last is a virtually unknown 19th Century novel that is splendidly entertaining.

Karen Ireland (book-vixen) I was given to book on Irish History for Christmas The Twelve Apostles Michael Collins, the Squad and Ireland's Fight for Freedom by Tim Pat Coogan and 1916 The Mornings After by Tim Pat Coogan

I have finished the Twelve Apostles it was a great read with first hand knowledge from the men who where part of the twelve, Documents, pictures and personal accounts from Micheal Collins letters

Frank McAdam | 73 comments I recently finished reading Freezing, an offbeat thriller where a dysfunctional morgue attendant goes on a quest to identify an unclaimed cadaver. It got a lot of rave reviews in the media, but I had the feeling the author was deliberately trying to make the characters seem as oddball as possible to hide the fact that there wasn't very much suspense in the story.

Margo I also started the new year off with a travel choice on my kindle, The Penguin Lessons. So far it's making me smile :-)

I'm also listening to Warbreaker and I have to say it's refreshing to get enthralled in other world politics - different species, similar issues! I'm enjoying that one too.

Glad you also enjoyed it, Maria. I found the confessional scene where the priest, I think, is replaced by a criminal, very creepy. The dialogue was sharp and believable throughout and I am looking forward to more books from her. I think she used to have a blog, but it's gone now. Whose voice reads the audiobook? is it the author's?
