I read the thread and suspect that it is a marathon of the movies already shown, which I have not seen. Liz watches both Hallmark channels more than I do, and has seen all of them.

I could never finish Great Gatsby

Not a good omen (no pun intended!) that you haven't read it Paul. My problem is the one I already have in the basket is Theft of Swords which I really want.

message 5705: by Paul (new)

Paul I have read Theft of Swords and its great. Fun epic fantasy

message 5706: by Margo (new)

Margo Ya it gets great reveiws. There's a couple of Sandermans in it - might go for one of them.

message 5707: by Paul (new)

Paul Do you mean Sanderson. If so definitely go for it.

message 5708: by Margo (new)

Margo LOL Now is that dyslexia or am I just tired?

message 5709: by Paul (new)

Paul At least I could decipher it so not too bad.
What Sanderson books are on it.

message 5710: by Margo (new)

Margo Calamity, The Bands of Mourning. I like the sound of both but I haven't yet read steelheart nor any of the mistborn series.

message 5711: by Paul (new)

Paul You'd need to read the earlier pars of both I'd say.

message 5712: by Margo (new)

Margo Sherry wrote: "Oh now I feel dumb! Lol that's what happens when you speak (type) without knowing the facts! Sookie Stackhouse books really are vampire books though!"

Sherry I didn't mean to make you feel bad! I have to admit I enjoy a bit of vamp action, but of the Anne Rice variety. Never took to true blood. The Harper Connelly mysteries are quite cozy ;-)

message 5713: by Margo (new)

Margo Might leave it so Paul, it's not like I don't have anything to read - I just hate to pass up a good sale! Thanks for your help :-)

message 5714: by Susan (new)

Susan | 4707 comments I simply do not understand the vampire fascination but that's why they make all kinds of books. I have a friend who likes all those fantasy kind of books like Paul and I don't get it. We rarely exchange books.

If The Night Circus wins, I'll give it a go since Seraphina thinks I might like it. I trust her judgment. BTW, Seraphina, where were you? I don't recognize the name. And how are you feeling? Is travelling good for you? I want my Irish grandchild well taken care of. :)

I just checked my library's hold list and I have moved up to No. 40 on the The Little Red Chairs. I've got my fingers crossed I'll be able to read it this year. I am so looking forward to it.

message 5715: by Margo (last edited Jun 26, 2016 02:11PM) (new)

Margo I love Rices work which is all about the inner battle between good and evil and is full filled with moral conflict and religious philosophy. Not so keen on ones that focus on teen angst, pain and torture ;-)

I hope you try Night Circus Susan. It is a beautiful story.

message 5716: by Paul (new)

Paul I love Anne Rices stuff for the same reason. Plus Marius is one of my favourite fictional characters.

message 5717: by Margo (new)

Margo I have yet to listen to that one. I got a bit disillusioned with Merrick. Must get back to the later ones.

You've gotten so many books read for your vacation, Seraphina. I never liked either Of Mice and Men or The Great Gatsby. It was only when we read East of Eden and Travels with Charley here that I liked Steinbeck's writing (I didn't like Grapes of Wrath, either!).

40?! It's really popular isn't it? I listened to it on overdrive. Does your library have overdrive or an ebook service? You can read or listen to books without ever leaving the house to pick it up. I use it all the time.

I'm not a fan of The Grapes of Rath either. I've only seen the movie of East of Eden with James Dean. I know it's only a small part of the story and I bet it's not accurate but boy could James Dean act! It's a shame he died so young.

I should read the book!

message 5722: by Margo (new)

Margo East of eden is one of my all time favorites. Great book.

I believe one of you commented that you like cozy mysteries.
PI On A Hot Tin Roof : A New Orleans Cozy Mystery; Talba Wallis #4 (The Talba Wallis PI Series) is on sale at Amazon for .99. Liz and I both like this series. She has read all 4, but I have read only #1. Here is my review of book 1

Was surprised how many people didn't care for The Great Gatsby. To me, it's one of the greatest American novels. I've always felt great empathy for Gatsby himself, the doomed romantic who refuses to give up his illusions even when he realizes they're false and empty.

message 5728: by Margo (new)

Margo I read The Nightingale and gave it 3*. Lotss of niggley plot holes annoyed me at the time, which I can't remember now. If you're more a fan of romantic fiction than historical it could be an enjoyable lite war read ;-)

message 5729: by SherryRose (new)

SherryRose | 0 comments Maybe I'll give Hannah a try. If it's too lovey dovey I can always stop reading.

Frank, maybe I'd like Gatsby in my old age. I had no attention span in my teens.

I agree Margo. There were some obvious plot holes and historical inaccuracies but nonetheless I still enjoyed it! I liked the characters and their development was well plotted.

message 5732: by Margo (new)

Liz is reading The Handsome Man's Deluxe Café
She was grumbling about Grace Makutsi, who. at the beginning, "changed from tactless to downright rude" (Liz' words).
I am reading Caught Dead

message 5734: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn Grace is such a great character. She has no edit button.

Frank McAdam | 73 comments I just finished reading The Shadow of the Wind. I'm sorry I wasn't able to get to it in time for the May group reading, but I'm really grateful to those here who wrote about it and brought it to my attention. It's definitely one of the best novels I've read in a long time.

message 5745: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn I'm glad you enjoyed it Frank. It is one of the best books I have come across, the sequel is good but the third part is exquisite.

I just couldn't get into the audio version. There are some books that don't work in audio and for me, this is one. The ideas in it were excellent - I got about one third in before I gave up - but it just didn't flow well. This is often a problem for me with translations.

I agree that audio books can sometimes be hard to stick with. I've been lucky with most audio books but a bad narrator can ruin it. A good narrator is a pleasure to listen to.

message 5750: by Margo (new)

Margo I'm nearing the end of The Magicians and I'm definately going to want of this series. It is a very slow starter, but once it got going, I was hooked. It's what Harry Potter would have been if Rowling were a nihilist ;p
