Julie | 95 comments Hi Alexandra, I love the idea of allowing your readers to select what happens next! I've never seen this before. How did you get started with this? Which type of book do you prefer writing?

Thanks, Samantha! I'm excited to be answering questions. :)

I write in a lot of different genres, I think, because I have so many interests myself. I love nerdy and geeky things, which is where my various Fantasy and Sci-Fi (and branches thereof) stories come from, but at the same time I like a bit of romance, and I've always loved dark, sort of Gothic stories, which is where the paranormal stories spawn from.

I've also had some pretty traumatic (not to sound depressing) things happen in my life, which has spawned (and continues to spawn) my contemporaries. Lyrics of the Heart, for example, is a story about teenage girl whose father has been in a nearly fatal accident, and she's at the hospital, afraid that he might never wake up; this reflects a time in my life where my brother was at the hospital, and I was going through that same fear.

For my writing, I collect and mesh together things from my own life to make the story -- whether they're things that have actually happened to me, or things that I'm passionate about.

Thanks for asking, Samantha! I hope writing is going well for you. :)

Thank you for asking, Julie! :)

Honestly, the idea sort of just popped into my head one day, to have readers vote for what happens; I just thought it would be fun, and I wanted to do something for my readers. But, the idea of releasing the book in parts came from fanfiction, which I used to write a lot of when I was younger. It was one of the things that started me writing, though I've always liked to create stories, ever since I was very little. This weekend, in fact, I'm releasing the second of my Reader Participation stories, and I'm very excited because the readers have enjoyed my first so much.

I began looking at publishing about eight years ago, when I was fourteen. I had finished my first novel the year before, and was writing nearly constantly. I had some interested parties, but nothing ever came of it -- but that didn't stop me from writing. I began to think again about publishing when I was sixteen, but then my life was sort of turned upside down (not in a bad way) when my brother sustained injuries in a terrible motorcycle accident, and had come live with us, followed closely by my grandmother, who had a mental illness; I became half caretaker, half writer then, finishing up school. Because of this, I wasn't published until about three years ago, when I decided to self-publish my works. It's been a long trek, but I've learned so much, and now I'm thrilled to have a growing fanbase, and readers who enjoy my stories.

Hmmm...honestly, I can't say which book I prefer writing most. I really love all of the genres I write, though I guess I can say I have sort of a soft spot for vampire characters, because they are so old, and I like putting a psychological/philosophical edge into some of my stories (because that's what I enjoy). My favorite genre is probably Fantasy, though.

Nicki Elson (nicki_elson) | 16 comments Hi Alexandra. The reader participation series is definitely an innovative concept - another bonus of the rise in self-publishing.

After reading your last response, I'm wondering - how do you think playing the role of caretaker impacted your writing? Does it make a difference in the type of stories you tell now versus those you wrote when you were sixteen?

Thank you! I like that my readers can participate. :)

I definitely think it made a difference in my writing. When I was 16, I was introduced to caretaking, but as the years progressed I gained more experience with it (and different experience, since my brother's was more physical, and my grandmother's mental). I believe it gave me more awareness of how trials effect people, and how hard it can be to overcome those trials. I'm very verbal about how I believe that there should be a greater diversity of characters, with all ranges of challenges in their lives; my newest MC is mute, for instance, something I haven't seen much of. Having experienced plenty of medical issues myself, and seeing those close to me deal with medical, mental, and emotional issues, I'm more conscious of my characters psychologically. But, I think that this gives my characters a more realistic feel.

Thank you for asking! :)
