I had James Patterson's Middle School The Worst Years of My Life (Midde School, #1) by James Patterson and gave 18 of them away in less than 20 minutes. I saved two for a couple of neighborhood boys. I had a Plan A, which fell through, but that was ok because I had a Plan B. Then, this morning, Plan B hit a snag. There was no Plan C! So I went to one of library branches which was beside a middle school. I talked to the library director about possibly giving books out there, but we both thought ther might not be enough kids and they wouldn't necessarily be kids that needed motivation to read. So, I ended going to the school and prowling the street for people waiting to pick up kids. I felt kind of like a stalker! I walked up to the car, or person, and asked if the child they were waiting for liked to read, explained about WBN, and gave them the book. Not one turned me down. I loved the last two books I gave away. One was to a kid waiting at a corner. I didn't want to seem like a stalking pedophile, so I asked the crossing guard (I wouldn't have even stopped if she hadn't been there). He was so cute and said his mom had told him he had to find a book by Friday for a trip - two birds with one stone! The last one was to two kids walking home with their dad. They spoke one of the Asian languages, but what I loved was when I drove by them a little later, the boy was still checking out the book. YAY! I ended up having a lot of fun!!!

Did anyone else in the group participate? I highly recommend signing up for next year!

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments I think this is a fantastic idea! I went to the website and snooped around a bit to find out how to start one country wide here in Canada.

We have a Toronto Reads month for April, where the library gets unlimited copies of a book and encourages everyone to read it and then in libraries across the city on April 23rd, we get together in groups to discuss the book. This year it was Fahrenheit 451.

I love the idea of giving books so people can have their own copy and get to know how great reading is.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments That's wonderful Amber! Still Alice is such a great book. This was my first year, and I hope it'll become a tradition!

And I want to know which girl got to make WBN last with Ryan Gosling :)

I live in Toronto too and love how we have a Toronto Reads month although I didn't like the selection for this year.

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments I really enjoyed Farenheit 451; at least it wasn't a huge book that you had to read KImberly.

Did you read last year's book ~ Girls Fall Down Girls Fall Down by Maggie Helwig ?
I'm just reading it now but thought it was a strange choice as it about people falling down on the subway. During the Toronto Reads month, on our public transit train systems there are questions from Twitter posted on our electronic boards about the book during the month. I can't imagine reading this book about possible poisonings on our subway system while being on the subway!

I missed out on last year's selection but I might give it a go this year :) I love seeing the questions on the TTC though. Glad it's getting the city reading with all the cuts they keep threatening us with.

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments It's an interesting read, especially because the setting takes place in Toronto and I know the streets and locations it mentions. Now I know what people in New York City or Chicago or Savannah feel like when they read a book set in their home place, lol.

I love that feeling! I wish there were more novels set in Toronto.

As a sleep shirt to give you sweet dreams?

I can't remember where I saw this on GR, but if you need some more Ryan...

The one I am currently reading, Jack of Diamonds is in Toronto - well Cabbagetown to be exact, but isn't that like a suburb, Cathie?

message 17: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments Hi Cherie. Cabbagetown is just east (about 10 mins)of the downtown area of Toronto. Most neighborhoods in Toronto have names (nicknames). It isn't a suburb. I live in Scarborough which is commonly referred to a suburb because it's past the old city limits, but years ago they amalgamated everything together to create the new mega city often called the Greater Toronto Area or GTA. It is all together; no driving through sparse areas or rural lands. You can't tell the boundaries from one another and haven't been able to for decades; only those who live in Toronto can really identify them.

I will have to check out Jack of Diamonds :-). Thanks for mentioning it.

message 18: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments I just checked it out; (quick aren't I, lol). Jack of Diamonds is written by Bryce Courtenay; isn't he the famous Australian author who died recently? If so, I wonder how he came about writing about Toronto?

I am putting this book on my TBR list. Thanks Cherie:-)

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments I'm impressed; most people don't know the unique neighborhood names of Toronto unless they have lived here.
I have heard wonderful things about this author's writings :-) Stop it ~ I'm learning things, lol

I am enjoying the book. It is easy to read. I do not know how Courtenay knew about Toronto, but he writes like he knows about a lot of what this book is about.
