SOLVED. Slices of Lives in a Small Southern Town [s]

Possibly. I haven't found a good synopsis yet and my local library system doesn't have a copy. I'll post when I can confirm it or not.
It takes place in a small southern town, begins around around the 50s to 70s. It follows the lives of several people in the town and tells about important incidents in their lives over a span of 15 to 20 years. They are:
A local criminal and a local member of Law Enforcement. At one point the criminal and the LE guy are on a prison work crew. They stumble upon a poisonous snake. The criminal talks the LE guy into handing him his gun to shoot the snake, but he shoots the LE guy instead. I think the LE guy's gun was a nickel plated revolver with ivory or pearl grips and he was very proud of it.
A husband and wife. The husband smokes cigars or cigarettes with a plastic holder. Nobody else around has one. They go somewhere and happen to find a large jar of the holders for sale in a store. The wife buys them all and breaks them so her husband will continue to be the only one that has one.
The town prostitute. We see her as a young girl around 12-13 and already sexually active. She describes sex to a friend as letting the guy pee a baby in me. Years later she is having dinner with a poor young man in town who has paid to have sex with her. He tries to make the meal better by having a fairly fancy steak TV dinner, all he can afford. The girl tells him about having dinner with another customer who took her to a steak house, which was better than his TV dinners.
Tha's all I can remember of the characters and incidents. Another memorable and annoying thing about the book was the way it was organized. The chapters were in seemingly random order. You might a have a chapter with a character in their 30s, then a few chapters on, an incident from 15 years earlier. Made the book needlessly confusing to read.
That's all. Anyone recognize it?
