I have a hardcover edition of Infinite Jest ... the Kindle version is way less intimidating, as you don't need a separate bag to carry it in.

You should say that on your back cover... ;)

message 53: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Woodland | 115 comments Very surprise when I am supposed to be like James Joyce - must have a bug in the system!

Hahaha, yes, readers will love that!

message 55: by Kate (new)

Kate Vane (katevane) I put in Chapter 1 of my published crime novel, Recognition, and it said Stephen King. Chapter 2 of the same book and it said Cory Doctorow (who I've never even read!).

Did the same with my work in progress, it said PG Wodehouse for Chapter 1 and Margaret Atwood for Chapter 2! Since it's meant to be humorous I'll quit while I'm ahead and take the Wodehouse.

Thanks for pointing this out, Tim - I can see hours of entertainment (aka not getting on with writing) ahead!

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Apparently for "Alloria" I write like James Joyce.

And for "Fuel to the Fire" I write like David Foster Wallace.

Atwood is well worth reading, I've not disliked a book of hers yet :~)

message 57: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments I tried a few things, the first one was David Foster Wallace (who I've never heard of before so I'll have to check his stories out). The next was H.P. Lovecraft and the third was Douglas Adams.

message 58: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments I just put a couple of chapters of Black by Rose in, and it said I write like Dan Brown.

Who's he?

So then I put the new short story, Shelley Mandrake in, and that's in the style of Neil Gaiman.

Ah that's better :)

message 59: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You do so not write like Mr Who's He!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Patti writes like Stephen Leather.... would you believe it?

message 61: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments It told me that I write with green crayon on brown wrapping paper and if I didn't get back into bed, it'd tell the ward sister :-(

message 62: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Nice one, Jim :D

message 63: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments Well I felt I had to say something to burnish my credentials.
You're nothing if your credentials aren't well burnished, let me tell you

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments What do you use? Brass polish?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Simon (Highwayman) wrote: "Patti writes like Stephen Leather.... would you believe it?"

Even I don't write to that level of utter bollacks.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments That brings me back a long way!

message 69: by Jason (new)

Jason Purdy | 14 comments Apparently I write like Stephen King! Which is amazing, because he is my favourite author of all time. This has made my day.

message 70: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Fish | 102 comments Apparently I write like HP Lovecraft. Are you sure this isn't just throwing up random author names?

message 71: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Do you write lie HP Lovecraft? Maybe it's right... ;)

BTW, I come from Chatham too!!!

message 72: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments *like*

Bloody iPad!

message 73: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Fish | 102 comments I don't think I write like Lovecraft, no. The odd thing is I tried it on bits from several of my books and it went for Lovecraft in all cases... very odd.

Where in Chatham are you, or have you escaped too?

message 74: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I've escaped. We moved across the river to Strood, although our original "patch" was the Chatham Maidstone Road / Pattens Lane area. Now I live just south of Oxford.

message 75: by David (new)

David Hadley It reckons I write like Neil Gaiman, Chuck Palahniuk, James Joyce and Rudyard Kipling.

Which is interesting. I've read most of Joyce, some Gaiman, no Palahnuik and I've eaten some of Mr Kipling's cakes.

message 76: by Andy (new)

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments I ran two chapters from The Remarkables through it and ended up being compared to HP Lovecraft and Robert Louis Stevenson. I then submitted a further two from the follow up I'm writing and was once again compared to Mr Stevenson, but also Margaret Mitchell.

Frankly, I don't give a damn.

message 77: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I let it read my whole novel, now I'm waiting for it to post the review on Amazon... "The Arthur C. Clarke of 42 Cakehole Lane!"

Round the corner from my old school (I went to Chatham Grammar). I escaped too - I live in Edwinstowe (Sherwood Forest) these days.

message 81: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Hallowell | 55 comments It says I write like J.R.R. Tolkien. If only that were true! I'm pretty sure that it is using content as one of its criteria, so anything that involves blades and dragons is probably going to come up as Tolkien. If I'd mentioned "old gods", I'd probably have gotten Lovecraft.
