Why is this the only book?

This book is prime for a follow up, I thought this over a decade ago. I can't believe Philbrick never wrote another. I remember it ending with a bit for a setup for a second one. The fact that there isn't another book and will never be is depressing. I've seen several posts online asking for a sequel, Spielburg reportedly wanted to make a movie off of this years ago...

I personally thought that if ANY book deserves to be am movie. This is that book. The very fact of the "Last Book" in the universe was Riter and then handed off to the main character made it worth being a Block buster hit. A handing off of the torch type of story. I would pay to watch this book on the big screen OVER and Over again! :)
