Round II - Tower Teams Read-a-Thon

(quoting the first post): Each team should choose a theme for the read-a-thon and read at least one book representing that theme.
*1 point per book read
◈ Each of them should read a book with a cover representing the color of the team.
*1 point per book read
1 point per book read per person is what I thought. So, I thought if I read 5 blue covers (my team is blue) I'd get 5 points, if I read 3 that fit the theme I'd get 3 points, for a total of 8 just from me toward the team's total. And if Lisa Kay reads just 1 blue book and 2 theme books, she'd contribute 3 points to the team, and so on. It sounds like there is a maximum number of points any team can reach, but the way I understood it, I thought the total was open-ended. HOWEVER, I think I may have misunderstood and maybe the wording just needs to reflect that it's 1 point for a theme, 1 point for a color, rather than '1 per book read'?
(I know Sonia is at work so I'm not expecting a response anytime soon, just posting my thoughts so I don't forget later)

Points for:
*1 point per member reaching goal
*20 points if 50% of the team members reach page goal
*30 points if team goal is reached
*50 points if all the team members reach page goal
I just hope I don't have to keep track of points, haha. I don't like point systems, too much math for me. lol

Would any of these covers be acceptable?

I would say all of the are acceptable, except for

Claire, that sounds like an acceptable - and clever - alternative.

I don't see why not, Lára. Go for it! Challenge yourself.

Yay! Thank you :)

Also, can you clarify for the mini challenge --- do we need to take real photos are could we just do something using GR links. Not everyone has access to a digital camera or knows how to upload photos.
Thanks!

Alas, we are going to have to wait for Sonia to weigh in on the question of graphic novels.
I can see where the confusion comes, as we are NOT accepting picture books for the Tower Teams Reading Challenge, unless they are children's "chapter" books -- which are ones with small pictures at the beginning of each chapter. Plus, we do a word count on those, NOT a page count, before they are accepted. I'm not even sure graphic novels provide that information. Maybe someone knows this?
However, Sonia did post this under message #6, FAQs :
9. For the read-a-thon does it matter about the books page count? Like can we read novella's and books under 160 pages for this since we are only calculating pages read?
Yes, you can. But don't tag it on the challenge's shelf, because is not eligible to the challenge, OK?

Is ther..."
It's a limit of one suggestion per team.
From Message #2: Mini-Challenges & Games
*Only one Mini-Challenge & Game allowed per team so give us your best shot
From Message #6, question 8:
Each team can come up with one mini-challenge idea for earning 5 more points.

Thanks. I wanted to double check :)"
No prob! This thread's at 3 pages long, some of the stuff is buried and hard to find or recall sometimes. I only remembered those because I've checked out that info about 500 times, lol.
I'm trying to remember where we post our list of participants, theme, etc? I thought I saw a note from Sonia saying where to post it but I can't find it. Was it in here? Or somewhere else?? Thanks!
Sonia has been having Internet problems. She has contacted her provider and hopes to catch up this week-end.
BTW, for those of you worrying about members who have NOT yet checked in at all to the challenge, you will see me gradually moving them to Cadet Blue or Banana Mania. Therefore, you will NOT have to worry about them as non-participants.

I also want to make sure that the captains are supposed to post the participants in this thread or should we send them in a PM.

"Goal Posting
By team captains on RaT page thread. Tell us the name of participants and their page goal."

1. Do I have to make a fix list of books and as I read them I can add or change the list/page count till 8 th of May
2. I can start reading books prior the date or I have to wait 1. of May at 5 pm to follow the rules. I mean if GR doesn't have time but only start date lot's of people will start reading before time is on
3. Do I post books/pages that I plan to read on my page and this page both or I leave it to moderators of my group.
4. What if I make a lits with more books I can read but I red a quote- does my club loose points?

Sorry for all this absence! Work is being really crazy lately combined with almost one week without internet connection.
I'll be addressing all the main issues in a moment, got to update the team's summary spreadsheet first. Just wanted to thank Jex, Lisa Kay and Teresa for tackling the questions

Goal Posting
By team captains on RaT page thread (in other words, THIS thread, unless she creates a new one). Tell us the name of participants and their page goal.

From Messages 1 & 2 in this thread, page 1:
Mini Challenge Submissions:
Team's Mini-Challenge & Game suggestion must be posted by one of the Team Captains/Co-Captains till the beginning of the Read-a-Thon May 1st PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4PM). After that it will not be rewarded with the 5 points even if the mods decided to use it during the event.
*The team Captains must send them by PM to the mod account or to Sonia with the subject: "RaT Mini-Challenge"
Remember: ONE mini-challenge/game suggestion per team!
**Participation Deadline**
You can choose to participate and/or changing your goal anytime. However, we have points and prizes involved so to be fair the time limit to joining or change goal is May 8th PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4 PM).
No changes allowed passing the time limit.
In Short:
*Mini Challenges Due by May 1
*Submissions with goals posted Due by May 8 (see above notes for specific times and info!)

◈ Duration: May 1st PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4PM) to May 12th PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4 PM)
*start time in all time zones: Click Here (Shows start in your time zone.)
*countdown: Click Here

Yes, you can, I'll be adding and independent participant list. But if you choose that, your points and goals will be excluded from your team's totals.
Monica wrote: "Do you also need to know our Theme for the RaT?"
Yes, please.

1) can we read Graphic novels for the Readathon
2) for both the color and theme --- does the team get multiple points per person if an individual reads several books with the theme or cover color. Example: I read 4 books with our theme, than the team gets four points.
(Unfortunately, I don't think this is fair for the cover color since some colors are much, much easier to find than others)
Sorry to be a pain, but I'm traveling internationally and am getting ready to come home. I need to finalize a reading list for another challenge so these questions influence what I choose.
Thanks!!

1. Do I have to make a fix list of books and as I read them I 1. Do I have to make a fix list of books and as I read them I can add or change the list/page count till 8 th of May
No. You can add them as you go. We only need know after you read them which is the book for color and theme.
2. I can start reading books prior the date or I have to wait 1. of May at 5 pm to follow the rules. I mean if GR doesn't have time but only start date lot's of people will start reading before time is on
Yes, you can. I'm aware of that loop. Since it benefits the slower readers, or the readers that don't like to start a new book before finishing the current, I let it stay. The main goal of the read-a-thon is to challenge yourself so I'm hoping that at least the majority starts the book reading close to the date.
3. Do I post books/pages that I plan to read on my page and this page both or I leave it to moderators of my group.
You can leave the participant posting here for the team captains. During the read-a-thon you can post in both threads if you like.
4. What if I make a lits with more books I can read but I red a quote- does my club loose points?
No. Posting and changing lists will not count for points. If you see the goal is too high or too low, you can always change it till the 8th May.

If you choose audiobook with no page infor, just post in Page Numbers...Just About Page Numbers so that Lisa Kay can add them to their version.

Thank you! I knew I needed to add one more thing but couldn't remember what it was :o)
Yes they count. You can even choose short-stories with 20 pages - as long as the cover exists on goodreads - to color and theme. The page number is not mandatory.
However, since they don't count for the tower team's challenge, my advise is, choose those if you want or must, but read an eligible book too :o)

Thank you! I knew I needed to add one more thing but ..."
Great! Thank you. I have a book I was about to read that's a 5 parter but each part is about 100 pages so I thought if I could get it to count for something, that would be good and I'll save it a few days :)

1) can we read Graphic novels for the Readathon
2) for both the color and theme --- does the team get multiple points per person if an individual ..."
1)The only rule I deviate from the Tower Teams rules is the page number. All the others are still on, so no graphic novels or manga. Sorry :(
2)No. Only one point per person per color and one point per person per theme. And that is till the 50% is achieved, after that is points per team.
Don't worry about that. Ask all you need.

Yes you can. You can also use the add book/author tool too if that's easier.

Are you ready??? I know I am excited :o)
Any question I let it pass unanswered? I was away for a week, a lot to catch up!
For team captains
Only 3 more days to submit your team's mini-challenge ideas.

That is a great mini-challenge!!! I love it!

I was planing on snooping around all the threads to catch up and add my 2 cents but I woke up with a migraine, so brain is working in slow motion... gaaaaa.... at least I'm doing some RaT stuff :o)

Just the one I asked at the same time as you posted this ;) "One more question.... about the theme. Is it something along the lines of a genre or could it be reading a book with a main character with a certain name or a certain word in the title? "

Sorry, I didn't saw it.
It can be anything you like.
It can be a book with an animal on the cover. A book from your favorite author. From a genre. A book in which the main character is abducted or that is about a controversial theme. A book out of your comfort zone.
The sky is the limit with this one :o)

That's ok, think it was good/bad timing on my part :)
That's great, thank you :)
Sorry for one more question, am I right in thinking members can decide to take part or not up to the 8th?

Just the one I asked at the same time as you posted this ;) "One more question.... about the theme. Is it someth..."
Yes, you are right. Goals and participation can be adjusted till the 8th.
Since there are members that have real life issues that will prevent them from participating on the RaT and others that are feeling that are letting their teams down for not being able to participate, we are debating if the rule:
An extra 5 points if all the team members participate in the read-a-thon
Will be excluded or not. Final decision will be posted tomorrow.
