Well, thirteen is "teen" and nineteen is "teen". I'm thinking late teens.

The most interesting comparison is Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, which is usually acknowledged as one of its sources. The comparison is not the parties or atmosphere but Gatsby's descent into criminality to get money for the girl he wanted -- similarly with Kurtz in "Heart of Darkness". There are also parallels between Marlowe and Nick.
