Last year I learned about Dewey's http://24hourreadathon.com/ . This year I am participating. Wondering how many other Kiwi's would be keen? The website has all the info up for 2013 and they have a Facebook page.

Simply, a READER must read as many books as possible in the space of 24 hours. You sign up to their website with hundreds of other readers. Or maybe you have one really long book that you wanna start. 24 hours will be a good way to knock some of those pages out.

If reading isn't your thing, you can sign up to be a CHEERLEADER. You support a reader or group of readers for an hour or two. This support would be invaluable. Really pushes you along.

Not keen on that? Sign up to HOST an HOURLY CHALLENGE. This gives the READERS a little brain tease so reading for straight 24 hours doesn't seem so boring. You have to come up with the challenge though.

Don't have enough time? DONATE a Prize. There are a lot of Shades of Grey on the prize list at the moment. Would be nice to see some Kiwi titles on there!

Start time is a little tricky, 1am on 28 April if we want to be awake for the same 24 hours as the other participants. You could probably start a little earlier or later but the cheerleaders may not stick around for ya.

So, anyone keen to participate?

Chris, did you take part in the readathon? I really struggled. There are 2 hours left. I managed to read one book in a day that was full of work and distractions. Listening to a book for the last hours.

Gonna make a better attempt at the second readathon in October :)

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

I wasn't able to take time off work sadly as it was too short notice so I will mark in my calendar for next year to do this

Readathon happens twice a year so there is another chance in October. Not sure if a date has been set yet but will add it here when it does

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Cool thanks. Will mark October down

Reminder that Dewey's starts tomorrow morning. Official start time of 1am but no one will be watching if you need to sleep for the first few hours! I am cheerleading for TeamTiger. Always time to sign up if you are doing some reading tomorrow. Lots of mini challenges to participate in throughout the 24 hours.

Agree, Kathleen. Keep letting us know, Sharlene, and I'm sure one will suit eventually.

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon has already announced their next date: NZ Sunday 27 April. I'm assuming same start time. I don't think times ever change, so 1am!

It was fun taking part at a cheerleader. You don't have the pressure to finish a book & you 'meet' so many other great book bloggers.
Definitely recommend signing up, even if it's just part in the reasonable hours!

#BoutofBooks Readathon is coming up next month, 6-12 Jan. Check out their website if your interested in trying something different. I think the official website is www.boutofbooks.blogspot.com or .co.nz

Yay. I'm on holiday during that time. Might just be able to participate :0)

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon
18 October
24 Hours only!

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

That is this weekend so I am trying vaguely to take part, I would be in deep trouble if I read for 24 hours in one crack when I have work tomorrow however I have spent the weekend knocking off some of my audiobooks in my queue while I am doing other stuff. At least I sort of took part :-)

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments Do you actually have to read for 24 hours solid?
Or just how many books you read in a day?

Hey Chris & p.d.r, the official Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon finishes at 1am NZ time, so you've got 2-3 hours to complete any reading. It's mainly on Twitter following #readathon but they started a goodreads group this year. Here is their link: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

It's reading as much as you can within the 24 hour time frame. Most people take quick naps throughout the day so they can do a lot more reading. Others stick with their regular routine and fit in reading around that.
Because its 24 Hours, people tend to pick shorter books or graphic novels so they get through more books.

You can set your own Books to Read and Personal goals like page counts or set number of minutes per hour. It's up to you how you want to use the 24 Hours :) This year there were over 900 participants signed up just as readers worldwide.

I have to be bright and awake tomorrow, senior management visiting from Australia in the morning, I am not staying up till 1am :-)

But thanks!

Next Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is scheduled for 25 April 2015.

NZ Time = 1am Sunday to 1am Monday.

Monday is observed for Anzac Day so you can sleep off your book hangover!

Will post more closer to the date :)

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Much betterer :-)

Maybe one day?

Hi Sharlene, I checked this out, but I'm not sure what it's about. Who is dewey? Is it the cat from the book - Dewey? Is this a fundraising thing? There's not much about the history on their site.

message 32: by Sharlene (new)

Sharlene (sharlenehuriwai) | 595 comments Mod
There should be a history page on the readathon site. But basically, Dewey was a book lover who started a Readathon back in 2007. It started with about 30 people and has grown exponentially. Dewey passed away in 2008, and Andi from Estella's Revenge has run it ever since.

It's just a fun international book lover event. No fundraiser. Although, you could certainly turn your own reading into one if you had a cause. That's up to you.

There were almost 1000 participants for the Oct 2014 event. I'm sure the next one will be no different. It's popular on blogs, Twitter, there is a new goodreads group, people on Tumblr and Facebook and Youtube too.

There are hourly prizes and mini challenges, as well as spot prizes. They ask for donations, especially for us international participants, so there has been a push towards Book Depository for their free shipping.

There are signups for cheerleading volunteers. Your assigned to a team and a list of readers to cheer for during the 24 hours, for as long as you are able.

I love this event so it would be awesome to see other NZers!
