As someone who's run a marathon all I can say is that runners everywhere are thinking of you.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments My sister-in-law (the cheerleader) and her daughter (the runner) were just past the finish line. Both are okay.

Almeta, I am so relieved to hear that your relatives are safe.

I am completely shocked to hear about this terrible event. My thoughts, as well as those of my family and friends, are with you all.

AmyK (yakyma) | 1045 comments That's great news Almeta, I'm relieved to hear everyone is safe. This such a sad day for Boston.

That's good news, Almeta. You must be so relieved.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments It's pretty weird. Just a few days ago they were looking for more sponsors for her run, to meet a fund-raising goal. Today the whole mood has changed.

So glad to hear that Almeta! I hope anyone else who had friends or family there is in the same situation - with good news. What a terrible thing to have happen.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments So glad your family's safe Almeta. And hope everyone else's is too. I gather that it is a big event that people travel from all over the country for? Is that correct?

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments What a horrible situation. Glad to hear your family is safe Almeta.

Yes Rusalka =) and there are people from all over the world as well.

(from wikipedia) The Boston Marathon is an annual marathon hosted by several cities in Greater Boston in eastern Massachusetts. It is always held on Patriots' Day, the third Monday of April. Begun in 1897, inspired by the success of the first modern-day marathon competition in the 1896 Summer Olympics,[1] the Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon, and ranks as one of the world's best-known road racing events. It is one of six World Marathon Majors.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments I knew Aussies tend to travel for it. But wasn't sure if that was one of our weird quirks or not. Thanks for the info AmyK (and for not providing me with a Let Me Google That For You link, which would have been justified).

Keeping the news open to make sure I keep up with the info.

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments There were 4 runners from my small city participating in the race today. A couple of them were 200 meters from one of the bombings. Fortunately, all four are uninjured.

AmyK (yakyma) | 1045 comments Good to hear Janice!! I had another friend who had a family member running today, she is also OK.

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Our town had runners in the race, too, but they are safe. Almeta, I am so thankful that your family members are safe. Janice, thank goodness your friends are fine, too. This really brings violence to our front door. The images I have seen are so disturbing. I cannot imagine actually being there in the midst of it all. Although I know some are in terrible pain, I sincerely hope the people affected by today's events will be able to rest peacefully tonight. This is a nightmare.

message 17: by Ann (new)

Ann (disciple45) What really bothers me about this (above the normal things) is how many very young children were there at or near the finish line waiting. I kept seeing people running with babies in their arms and I just can't imagine what it must have been like.

message 18: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Ann, isn't that the truth! A perfect day for young elementary age children at a sporting event forever turned into tragic chaos and carnage. So very sad.

Sending thoughts and prayers to those in West, Texas, tonight. I grew up outside of Fort Worth toward Waco, and these are some of the kindest people in the country. My heart is so heavy today. So much heartbreak across our country. It just reminds us how dear life is.
