Thank you, dear friends! :-)

Not exactly Christmassy watercolor sketch, but every Advent Calendar needs some pain and struggle in it, right? ;-)

Thanks, dear Johanna! I don't get anymore the notifications.

All my solidarity to Josh.

My favourite writers could get away with basically anything (well, murder is probably an exception ;-). I can't understand people writing hateful things to a writer: if it is a writer they don't like, why bother? If it is a writer they like, see above.

message 2527: by Anne (new)

Anne | 6816 comments Hugs to Josh and here’s to keeping a healthy schedule and not listen to the ones who don’t get it.

And writing angry letters to authors for not writing fast enough, what’s up with that? It’s rude, it’s insensitive and also quite unproductive. Do they really think they can bully anybody to create and perform? Why do they think they have a right to bully anybody anyway.

I am happy for every book you make, in your own time. In the meantime there are actually other books to read, not to mention, any book may be re-read or re-listened to :)

I second all of this. :-)

And yes, I would like to reread Fair Chance, is a matter of fact. As one of my favorite Josh books of 2017. Though it feels like it came out a lot longer ago than it did. 2017 was a long slow year, I think.

But anyway, here's to fresh starts!

Well said, Antonella and Anne. Couldn't agree more with you two — something must be really wrong with people who write rude, unkind, bullying emails to an author. What exactly do they think they'll gain being hateful and arrogant? Unbelievable.

Just remember that most (99,9%?) of your readers are happy to wait as long as it takes to get their hands on your new books. No need to rush or push. When you enjoy writing them, we'll enjoy reading them. It's that simple, really.

I think people just don't think what could be behind a delay like these books. Perhaps they think the author is just slacking off, and don't realize it could be something more serious that the author is just not talking about.

Years ago, not that many actually, we didn't have this immediate connection with authors. We didn't know what was actually happening with them. Plus, they wrote less, so there wasn't such a worry if a year went by with very little, or no books published at all.

These days, everything's changed. Everything's immediate. Now. And we know so much more about authors, and what's happening in their day-to-day lives, that when they don't speak up and say "hey, my life is crumbling right now" because, heck, who wants to have to say that out loud? people assume nothing is wrong so everything should still be on track.

At least, that's my thoughts.

I agree with this, but ... I think an author should be able to "slack off" if they want or need to, and I don't think they have any obligation to disclose anything of their personal life. I also don't think an author owes their readership books on a set schedule, even if it has been published. Each one published is a gift, and precious, and should be treated as such. Too much "you owe me" going on these days!

YES. This is all very true!

I think part of it is, as Jordan says, we're all used to publishing schedules moving at the speed of light. And there probably is a tendency to assume that--unless we hear otherwise--everything is going fine for the author (especially in these days when authors share so much of their personal lives).

And I DO understand it's frustrating when you've been waiting and waiting for a book, and the author suddenly changes the publishing schedule and moves your longed for title back and another title forward. It's not that I don't understand or am not sympathetic.

The problem with venting that frustration is it doesn't change anything except (in my case) to make me even less productive than I already am. When I released The Boy Next Door I was actually dreading hearing from the people who would want to know why I could get that book out and not one of the ones they wanted. :-(

On the one hand it's great people really, really want these stories. I wish I COULD just get back "on track" and produce like I used to.

I had the same problem and I can't find an option where you get an e-mail-notification. Even if I follow the blog with my Google account I only see it logged in to my blogger dashboard.

So, what I did is, I added the RSS feed of the blog in my Thunderbird e-mail-client (works with Outlook too). This way the software will check for updates and download the new posts in my e-mail-client.

ETA: Just in case: I'm using this feed address: http://joshlanyon.blogspot.com/feeds/...

Josh wrote somewhere about updating the website, so maybe *hinthint* if the new side was WordPress the blog could be moved there too and the subscribing and notification process would be easier?

Thank you for your explanation.

I use a Mac though, and I'm not exactly proficient with such stuff. I suppose I'll wait for the new version of the blog and in the meantime I'll rely on your help here.

Ah, sorry for the confusion, I'm not saying there will be a new version. I wouldn't know about anything like that. It's just me wishing, hoping, looking on all the possibilities. :-)

Hmm. The new website is a Word Press template. I'm not sure how that would work. I don't want to lose the old posts or the people who follow the blog, but there might be an option for moving everything.

You must come and tell the SO this. :-D He's currently tearing his hair out (or would be if he had any) over Word Press. His web design is old school and Word Press is like another language (I am informed).

I think the new website will be clean and simple once it's done. I'm so looking forward to it. However I have a very large site and it's taking a lot longer than I'd hoped to make this happen.

Lol, yes, that’s very true. They are different languages. Sorta. Wordpress is really for newbies and people not into serious coding. That said, your site is probably a lot more complicated than anything Ive put together so far.

What I really appreciated about WP was how quick I could put something together. last summer when I was panicking over an online writing course I was supposed to facilitate at the library that turned out not to be available, I was able to throw a professional looking website together in a weekend and had an 8-week writing course for beginners finished in a month’s time. But the initial website set up only took two days. And reconfiguring it for multiple courses after my first group asked for more classes on specific topics, was easy!

Having the right template helps too. My Mom’s site used a template that was so basic, it looked... well, not very professional. I found a new template for it recently, and now it looks great! Much more professional!

That said, there are books that can help. I used one in the Dummies series for a few questions I had. I’ll have to look it up when I get back to work tomorrow and post it here for you.

That would be great. It's was a little tense around here for a bit because I was really pushing for going for something totally new and (I imagined) simplified. But it's not simplified if you don't speak the language, and the SO does not speak Word Press. :-O

So...one step at a time. Or one page at a time...

Oh fudge, I forgot to look it up. I think it was Wordpress Web Design for Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson.

That said, there are a lot of similar titles out there. Just search Wordpress into your library’s catalog, or at your bookstore, if this one doesn’t work for you.
