And don't get me started on the good-ole-boys club that is science fiction. Women are barely tolerated and they'd better be wearing a brass bra.

:-D :-D :-D

Well, at least women are embraced and even celebrated in Mystery. I had the thrill of watching Sue Grafton receive her lifetime achievement award at the Private Eye Writers of America dinner. And Sara Paretsky delivered the speech. So...that was exciting.

SF is a different continent -- heck, planet!

message 1453: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments Hehe Yeah I know!

Even though there are some excellent SF writers, one who took most of the awards (Hugo and Nebula) last year. There's been so much scandal recently on how the female readers and writers are treated within the genre.

#gamergate stirring things up (that really NEED to be stirred up) just added flames to the fire, too.

I was in the science fiction fandom 30 years ago and we were not treated as badly as some of the stories I hear these days. It's like we're regressing.

I've got to ask, is there already (and if so, how the heck did I miss it?!), or will there be a coda for CUTYS? I'm in need of this. :-)

Enjoy! I absolutely L O V E Swift and Max's coda — it's one of my very favorite ones. And the beginning of the poem Swift wrote in this one. Just lovely.

I'm seriously thinking Max and Swift are becoming my favorite couple. Of course, Adrien and Jake rate right up there with them, but I just love so much about CUTYS!

It's true. I've been listening to CUTYS a lot lately. But give me some time with the I Spy books, or with Dangerous Ground, and I'll easily switch couples. :-)

That's the thing, I feel with Max and Swift that while I'd like to have more, there doesn't need to be more of their story. But then, I don't live in the author's brain. Maybe there's more hidden up there that I don't know about? :-)

Jake & Adrien is like first love, they are always special :-)
Another couple I never get tired of is Will and Taylor (though I'd still give Will an earful given the chance)
Kit and J.X. has so much potential to make it to top 3...

Oh yes. I think Max would eventually -- and not so far in the future -- move in with Swift. They would stay in Swift's space because it is a healing and positive place for him to be, and because Max doesn't mind the surroundings so long as everything runs mostly efficiently and Swift is there.

Thanks, Johanna! Classic line which I enjoyed: "Somehow if my guys aren’t stumbling over bodies or chasing clues together, it just doesn’t seem like true love to me."

Valerie (valerie_c) | 1519 comments I'm really looking forward to Jefferson Blythe, too. Sounds fun! :)

I used to groan when anyone mentioned New Adult romance, but I did read some great NA books this year (m/m and m/f). I just don't like the overly angsty ones.

I'm still a little unsure about NA, mainly because I don't really know what it means. I mean, I know it's New Adult, but what particular feature makes it NA rather than just A? Because if it's angst, I don't want it.

But of course whatever Josh does is bound to be good, so I'll read one at last!

I have been wondering about the NA label myself, so far my personal take on it is that it is YA, but with more sex. But that is by no means a professional explanation. :)

Varecia | 956 comments Anne wrote: "I have been wondering about the NA label myself, so far my personal take on it is that it is YA, but with more sex. But that is by no means a professional explanation. :) "

I did not take my research further than Wikipedia, but Anne's description sounds quite apt to me :-) And I am looking forward to read Josh's book, because if anyone can "cure" me of my dislike for MCs in their twenties, it would be he, I think.

message 1496: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments NA or New Adult is simply describing the ages of the protagonists. They are usually anywhere from 18 to 25, college age. It is not like Young Adult in that it's full on m/m just younger characters.

Well, age certainly factors in, and I suppose sex does too to some extent (though possibly not as much as we would think from m/m romance!) :-D Basically it has to do with the challenges and experiences that come at certain points in your life. So...first real grown-up job, first real grown-up romance, etc. The themes are about those firsts, those discoveries, those milestones and challenges.

In the case of my work...first murder investigation. :-D See?
