That's because he is sneaky. ;-)"
So sneaky! I just noticed the blog festivities myself. Thanks also. :)

This will make Hj (and the rest of us!) happy — a brand new Christmas coda for Con and Wes from EVERYTHING I KNOW. :-)

And also coda # 32 on Josh's blog — Carey and Walter from SLINGS AND ARROWS.

Aaaaand maybe you'd like to share your holiday cocktail recipe with Josh and his readers?

Thank you, Johanna, for posting all the links here! :-)
Holiday cocktails, though... yesterday I drank red wine with spices (kind of cold mulled wine) and I was tipsy after only three sips. So, probably no cocktails for me, unless you want me first dancing on the dable and the snoring under the tree.

Oh, wow, two brand new codas! And I always loved Carey and Walter!
Thank you for telling us, dear Johanna!

Josh was really tricksy with this one. We got in quite late from our tango holiday party and I saw that it had been posted at 1:00am (midnight PST).

I always thought Walter and Carey were two of my more interesting couples. Because it would not be easy, but there would be such love and affection and desire there.

It is. And so I think it can be gotten on its own or in the collection. Or, if I recall, didn't Josh create a collection of just his Petits?

Oh, how heartbreaking and wonderful.

Exactly what I decided! I've downloaded it onto my Kindle again.

I had to skim BRB yesterday in order to write that coda, and I think it's an interesting effort. I was pleasantly surprised by some parts, but I do see why it was a mistake to come back from sabbatical with something so experimental.
But I don't regret the experiment. I think the fact that I am willing to experiment -- gamble with my paycheck as it were -- actually makes me a more interesting writer, and it might be why I've managed to stick around so long.
Or maybe the brooms just don't reach that far into the shadowy corner. :-D
Anyway, it's a strange story, I must admit.

I liked it! I just have a piss-poor memory and wanted to re-read it. I read it in such a hurry when it came out.

This is one of the things I admire in you, Josh — that you're not afraid of experimenting. Or if you are afraid of it, you don't let it to stop you — and if so, that's even more admirable.
I believe this is something that keeps your writing skills "fresh and alive" when you challenge yourself by experimenting. The wonderful thing about taking chances is that it brings new ideas with it, and that "feeds" your creativity.

I always wonder about this... I'm still alone, and yet, my holidays aren't bad because my parents still want to see me. So, for me, my holidays are just like when I was a kid, only now I'm grown up and buying my own gifts for my parents, and having to figure out how to get them to my parents in another state if I'm taking the train. lol. That's it.
lol, there was the time I bought them giant speakers and had them shipped to their house a few months in advance and fake "ruined" the box so I could claim I'd had it for years and just "needed to store some things in their basement". lol. My Dad actually fell for that.
But I also have friends who host Thanksgiving for friends, and I can never go because my parents are always wanting to get together. Even though I feel like I'll be single my entire life, for right now, I don't seem to lack things to do during the holidays!

Odd you say that, I thought it was a solid story and an amazing piece of writing. I never considered it to be experimental. You had me for the ride from Page 1. It's odd how we perceive things, but I do think you're brave and not just for writing this one. The subjects you have dealt with in the subtext of all the mysteries are mind-blowing. I'm in awe.

Wow. You wrote that yesterday? Amazing. And I see nothing wrong with experimental. I think that definitely keeps you and your work fresh for new and older readers. And yet, the core is still you, so those who like the same thing from the same author, won't be disappointed either.

I love that you are willing to experiment. You have so many different types of stories. It makes it so much more interesting to read. I've had favorite authors that I stopped reading because it started to seem only the names were changed between stories. I will gladly follow you down any path you choose to skip along.

That's very nicely said, I totally agree.
I think Josh is the only one of my favourite authors who has a story for every mood I'm in. If I open the Kindle folder with his books I am totally sure that I will find something I can reread immediately, no matter if I feel happy, sad, bored or silly :-)

Yes, exactly! Seconding :-)

I agree. Josh is genuinely a professional author. He is skilled at his craft, and I think he could write almost anything he wanted to. The distinction I am making is that some people get quite good at writing a particular story, but never write as well as Josh and would flounder if taken out of their comfort zone.

But part of going through a sabbatical is to show that you have gained new experience/perspective/idea etc, right? :-)
I don't have a problem with BRB at all but Yaoi is a very niche sub-genre that most readers wouldn't expect from Josh, that makes it double-difficult for some fans?

I really enjoyed it when I first read it. Then, Josh posted something about Yaoi stories and some links. After I familiarized myself with the history, I read it again with a new appreciation.

There is always pressure to keep writing the same thing that was popular before. And it's tricky because a successful (in a monetary sense) career means finding that balance between what you love and what your core readers love.

This is just one reason why my first love remains forever the mystery genre. It provides a framework to explore so many socio-political topics. I mean, in theory romance does too, but too often in romance there is an effort to try and prettify. Especially when it comes to the past.

Thank you all for these lovely comments. I think I am unbelievably fortunate to have found my readers. I'm especially conscious of that as the year winds down again and it's time to evaluate 2014 and plan for 2015.
There are an awful lot of talented writers out there who never find the readers who will love their stuff. A lot of it is just luck (I don't ever forget that).

And we are the lucky ones too, who have found your books!

It is that very prettifying which really annoys me about the romance genre and in some cases it's readers. Now I didn't grow up reading romance. I came to it very late in the game, so I'm just not steeped in the tropes that regular readers are. I have such a huge range of genres I've read, my expectations are just different.
That being said right now I am reading a series or romances that are not deep, not angsty, not going to be classics. But they are fun and not taxing. Just what I need at the moment.

Well, like the good hostess she is, Romance wants all her guests to feel comfortable. I appreciate that. But it's also one reason Mystery looks down her elegant nose at Romance. And rarely invites her to Mystery's parties.
