I remember liking that excerpt a lot. I clearly remember how fresh and youthful it felt. How very cool that we'll get to read the whole story at some point! And meet the guy in it! :-)

Some of you have found it already, but yeah, Josh posted an excerpt from Everything I Know (a novella he's planning to publish later this year) on his blog:

Although at the beginning I was beating myself on the head like: ''How is it possible that I missed an excerpt from Josh?!?''. Then I noticed the date...

Thanks for the link!

Josh, I'm floored by this amazing excerpt. I'm with the rest, I want to know more! These characters are very intriguing.

How cool, Karen! Especially all the smiling, picking up, and petting. ;-)

Illustrations of kissing and stuff?! Mmmm."

Another cute delivery guy behind my door this morning! My Japanese copy of フェア・ゲーム by Josh Lanyon is here!

And about the wonderful illustrations Karen mentioned earlier — page 337! PAGE 337! Oh. My. God. I love it!

Cheers to cute delivery guys delivering cute little Japanese books!

Also p. 293 is one of my favorites, recalling when and why that kiss happens. Aki Fuyoto is the illustrator of Fair Game and A Dangerous Thing. I love the way the outdoor scenes are drawn.

I really do honestly hate writing during the course of the rough draft. I guess largely because turning off that internal critic long enough to get the bones down is hard. We are taught to be critical, to analyze, to second-guess our creative choices. So it kind of goes against the grain to just bang it out as fast as possible.

And there are those who *don't* bang it out. They spend years crafting every perfect word. But I would rather spill it out so that I don't lose the emotional continuity. Until it's down on paper (even if it's just cyber paper) I can't even see it.

Writing! My dossier. Arrrgh! A resubmission so I can renew my teacher's license. I've always had the reputation of being "a good writer." Ha! This is the most painful, discouraging, deflating exercise ever. In the end, (assuming I meet the deadline and pass and can teach a few more years), I've gifted the world with yet another treatise of academic gibberish.

Venting much? : !

HJ | 3603 comments Thanks for posting the links, Johanna! Wow, that was difficult. What very talented people Josh has working for him!

I suspect my approach was more literal than artistic, in that I was trying to choose covers which I felt conveyed the story or group of stories, and not the ones I liked instinctively without thinking about the stories.

There are some striking covers which are beautifully composed etc. but look too modern or may convey the wrong mood. It must be so difficult to find the right public domain photographs or images.

There were some problems with the previous EVERYTHING I KNOW blog post and it's now delated. If you guys already voted for EVERYTHING I KNOW covers, Josh says that you don't have to do it again, he has already collected your votes. Anyway, here is link to the new, improved post in two parts:

I don't know about Finland, we do have drinking songs here as well, but I believe the Swedish do it more than we do.

For some reasons a lot of Norwegians tend to start singing after having a few drinks, sometimes they get thrown out of bars because of it :)

LOL. Oh yeah, that's definitely something we have in common in Norway and Finland, then! :-)

Yes, the drinking songs are slightly more a Swedish tradition than Finnish. Although we do it here, too. And actually most of the traditional drinking songs I know (and have been forced to sing *grin*) are in Swedish. :-)

Speaking of languages... It's super interesting to follow the Cover contest voting on Josh's blog. So many sharp-eyed comments there! And the votes seem to divide a lot.

But one thing I've noticed is that all the Spanish speaking people choose exactly the same covers on every voting thread. Hmmm... ;-)

message 843: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments Singing in bars absolutely does not happen in the US. It's an odd difference between here and Europe. I know the Germans will belts out a tune or two, especially when celebrating a football win.
