D Hermann I have always found the controversy surrounding Kazantzakis' 'Last Temptation' rather confusing because, if you read it in its entirety, it completely agrees with Christian gospel canon. Yet both the book and the subsequent movie received huge amounts of criticism... I suspect this is because people stopped reading or watching before the end of the story.

However, 'the da Vinci Code' clearly disagrees with everything taught in Sunday School, yet there was no equivalent controversy... In fact, the only real hullabaloo I witnessed was about how much Brown borrowed work from other authors (qv Holy Blood Holy Grail).

So, my question is: why?

Kirk Brown is not an author any serious scholar or theologian can take seriously. Kazanzkis is.

Plus Last Temptation was published in 1953, where book banning by the Catholic or Othodox Church was taken more seriously.
