Try Doctorow, especially "World's Fair" and "Billy Bathgate". The rest of his ouerve is [mostly] as fine as contemporary literature gets.

I suggest Inside Outside by Herman Wouk. It is semi-autobigraphical, set it approximately the same time frame. I met Professor Wouk and discussed the book with him. I told him it was one of my favorite books and of all his, it was my favorite. Considering he is a Pulitzer Prize winner and wrote War and Remembrance, The Winds of War, The Caine Mutiny just name a few, having an arcane work may seem a little quirky; however, he responded, if you really understand that work, you understand me.
One thing I find extremely interesting in the book is the character of Peter Quark. Peter Quark is the pseudonym for Philip Roth, another excellent Jewish American author who is equally worth reading (try the Plot Against America). Professor Wouk being an Orthodox Jew makes a statement about Philip Roth's books by stating that although his Jewish American experience differs from Peter Quark, he defends the right for him to write it. Considering Philip Roth's works at time have been very controversial, I believe Professor Wouk has stated that great literature should have no limits.

I also loved the Chosen. I've read it at least 30 times in the past 45 years. I used to read it every year before school started to inspire me because learning is so precious in the book. I also loved The Promise (I also read that at least 30 times) and the Asher Lev books..Chaim Potok died about 8 years ago. I carried his obituary in my copy of the Chosen for a long time. Reuven's relationship with his father was incredible. The kind of relationship that every child would hope for. You've got to see the movie. Rod Steiger plays Reb Saunders, maximillian snell is David Malter and Robby Benson is Danny ( the only kind of miscast character.)

Who's the author?"
The author to The Hiding Place is Corrie Ten Boom and yes! That book is incredible! It's made even more amazing in my opinion because it is a true story.

It's just as in involving and culturally imminent as The Chosen, and it's similarly about people who are seemingly illy matched from friendship because of heritage and background growing closer. If you decide to give it a go, i hope you enjoy it!
