Which year?

I'm about half way thru the book so this might be a question that will be answered later. But I can't help to wonder in which year the story takes place.

I thought it was the '80s first seeing as the main character made a remark about the decade in the beginning and that Bush is president, which would place the story late '89. But then they mentioned the movie Goodfellas which was released in September of 1990.

Seeing as the book was released 1992, is it suppose to take place in the same year or earlier?

First novels take awhile to write, so he might have started it as far back as, say, 1988/89 and finished it up in early 1991. So there is no clear calendar year for the action, nor is one necessary.
