Niámh | 271 comments Obviously none was there so she turned around and made her way to another classroom.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 115 comments Professor Semmorus threw open the well-oiled, large wooden doors, practically bounding into the room. It had a powerful effect-- the light from the hallway created an alluring silhouette of his trench-coated form. There were no light switches to be had, but a flick of the wrist and the room blazed with lights. True, this was not something that he could do in just any room; he had spent enough time here to set his up specifically for his purposes. Any teacher is more impressive in his own classroom than anywhere else you may see them in the school, and this was especially true with Semmorus. His desk in the far back corner of the large room was littered with objects, and he came to a seat just behind it, facing the door. The ceilings of the room were very tall, some of the walls lined with bookshelves of various articles to the very top. The rows of old fashioned, assembly-line style desks hugged the perimeter of the room, the middle being a large open space. The room was ready for students to test their skills in controlling their powers.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 115 comments Semmorus' class was an unusual class. As per the material he taught, he found that atypical methods lent themselves better to the class than typical ones. It was filled with Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, all at once, and most of the time the students were working on different things at the same time. As Margot walked into the room, there were students at the many desks picking locks, levitating small balls through intricate mazes, writing, experimenting, creating shapes, manipulating temperatures of materials in strange looking thermometer rigs, reading, and some, taking tests. In the open space in the middle of the room, there were students juggling, sparring, levitating objects, manipulating light, stretching. Semmorus was somewhere in the far back of the room, observing a student's work. She stood in the doorway, just watching all the activity, holding a small pile of books in both arms against her chest.

RedAxel Zephyr paused in front of the door, his backpack slung across his shoulder. His fingers twitch a bit before he slides them into his pockets nervously. He's never been one for meeting new people, which class is usually full of. And he doesn't even know how this classroom will work.. He takes a deep breath. Don't think about it. Can't be that bad, right? He reaches forward and opens the door, hesitantly stepping into the room and shutting the door behind him before looking at the classroom. What he saw before him made him blink with surprise. He doesn't even notice Margot, standing in the doorway beside him. This was one thing he definitely had not expected.. His eyes immediately go to the kind of things that he would usually do. Writing. Sparring. Those were the only two things he would say he'd be interested in doing, of the activities before him.. He trudged to an empty desk in a corner and set his backpack by the chair, taking a seat.

message 374: by Evelina (new)

Evelina (EvelinaOfTheElves) | 26 comments Aly strode into the classroom. She was very excited to start learning, but she didn't want to show it. She hadn't set foot in a school since she was twelve years old... not since she had run away from the orphanage. She had stolen a few books to take with her (the Lord of the Rings trilogy), but, as good as they were... it was hard to only read three books in two whole years. They had kept her plenty sharp, though.

She skimmed the room with her eyes. The classroom looked cool enough; lots of engaging activities. Her hands began to glow and heat up before she realized what she was doing: when she looked down, a lock of her hair was on fire. Quickly, she concentrated hard and extinguished it. She glanced around, hoping that no one had seen.

She didn't have a backpack or supplies, having just arrived from the forest that she had run away to, so she searched the room for an empty desk. There were many of them, surprisingly. She walked confidently over to a desk in the front of the room. She wasn't afraid to be called on, even if she was probably going to look stupid. It was no wonder, after all... in fact, she was probably a more smart than the average runaway. She crossed her arms and looked straight ahead, waiting for class to start.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 115 comments "Ah, three new students!" Professor Semmorus called out from across the room, noticing them for the first time. "Take a seat, I'll be with you in a moment." He glanced back at them only briefly, helping a student with a levitation exercise while he spoke. Somehow, he seemed to be aware of everything that went on in his room at any given time, crazy and busy though it was.

Margot watched as Zephyr walked past her and took his seat. She recognized him from the day before, but didn't say anything. It wasn't that she felt uncomfortable, or too shy to speak-- she just didn't feel a need to interject herself onto the scene. She was a person who tended to quietly absorb what happened in the world around her. She sat down in the seat closest to her, which was on the other side of the room. Absently tucking a few strands of sleek black hair behind her ear, she watched as Aly came in. She caught the near power slip-up but quickly turned her attentions elsewhere so that the firey girl would not realize that she had-- she had had her share of powers-gone-haywire moments, and definitely knew that a person felt a lot better when such things went unnoticed. There were four rows along each of the two walls, and every other row faced the opposite direction, with the long table-top-like connected workspaces in between. She was sitting in her seat sideways, facing the rest of the room (because her seat naturally faced the wall), just watching, patiently, getting a feel for the workings of the room and the people in it.

Professor Semmorus slowly made his way to the middle of the room, commenting on student's work as he went. His movements seemed quite uncalculated, like he was simply wandering about. In fact, it appeared that he had completely forgotten that Zephyr, Aly, and Margot were there altogether. But this could not be further from the truth. He waited until he knew that they were all watching him, until it was least expected. Then, without warning, he deftly sent a blazing ball of energy at each of them, turning on his heal impressively and shooting them out of his hands. One at Margot, one at Zephyr, one at Aly. Each student has a split second to react-- they looked like blazing balls of fire, though in reality they were harmless, controlled illusions. And just as quickly as he had turned and done this, he returned to a semi-relaxed, inquisitive teacher stance, watching to see how each one would react.

message 376: by Evelina (new)

Evelina (EvelinaOfTheElves) | 26 comments Aly was watching the teacher, waiting for him to introduce himself o start the class... When suddenly, he whipped around like the tail of a dragon and sent a dangerous-looking ball of energy right at her.

Shocked, she jumped out of her seat, almost overturning her chair. She then turned around and shot a small burst of fire at it, just in case. She licked her lips, wishing she had brought a water skin.

Suddenly it dawned on her that maybe this was some kind of test. She glanced up at the teacher, awaiting his reaction.

message 377: by RedAxel (new)

RedAxel Zephyr had been waiting and tracking the teacher with his eyes across the room, waiting for the professor to address him, or one of the others. So he at least saw the 'attack' coming when the professor threw the ball, though he wasn't prepared for it. He threw his hand forward, and a small bolt of electricity arcs forward to meet the ball, cancelling it out. Zephyr quickly darts to his feet, his hand on the hilt of his dagger.

message 378: by Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (last edited Feb 02, 2014 06:24PM) (new)

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 115 comments Margot's reaction was instantaneous. Where as the others had jumped up and attacked, she dived down out of the way. The colors, in a wave-like fashion, disappeared, and her body became invisible. She watched as her books clamored to the floor beside her. In less than a second the glowing ball whizzed through the empty space where she had been moments before, dissipating as it hit the wall. She breathed heavily, her skin shifting in an out of it's invisible form, not quite retaining either. Her stomach twisted in a knot. The whole world appeared hazy, as if she were looking through some sort of shifty, semitransparent screen, making her nauseous. She slowly sat up, and tried to collect herself and control her level of visibility, shakily picking up the fallen books and sitting back in her seat, but she couldn't make herself purely solid again. Her body just kept fluctuating, in and out of semi-visibility. It took about a minute before her body finally settled into an almost-transparent state.

Professor Semmorus quickly absorbed both student's attacks, and smiled. He always loved seeing student's reactions, simply because they were so revealing. He never thought that one was better than the other, just that they were all so magnificently different. He caught Aly's glance, knowing that she had caught on, which made him smile all the more. "Welcome to the Control of Powers class!" He boomed, then added affirmatively, "Quick work, students." He waited as everyone slowly began to figure out what had just happened, striding over to his desk and plucking up a stack of papers.

message 379: by Evelina (new)

Evelina (EvelinaOfTheElves) | 26 comments Aly smiled a little. She had passed the test (or at least she thought she had), and Professor Semmorus seemed to be kind, mischievous, and professional all at the same time. She watched as he strode over to his desk to collect some papers. She slowly sank back into her chair, muscles tensed should a second attack come.

message 380: by RedAxel (new)

RedAxel He remains standing, eyes narrowed. Personally, he thinks that the whole thing was uncalled for. Adrenaline is still flowed through his veins, fingers white from the force of which he's clutching the hilt of his dagger. To his credit, he hasn't pulled the weapon out yet. His breath is a bit short. His eyes take in the smile of the professor. Zephyr finds nothing remotely amusing about the events.. His free hand clenches into a fist, and he closes his eyes for a moment before opening them. His gaze slowly flickers around until he spots Margot, and her state. He blinks, surprised. Noting that she looks a bit shaky, he pauses before looking at the teacher again, expecting some kind of explanation. He's still as tense as he had been when he was attacked.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 115 comments "This is a class in which you will learn to control your powers." Professor Semmorus addressed the three of them, being as the rest of the students had already been there since the beginning of the year. As he spoke, he set a small packet of paper onto Aly's desk, making his way back toward the middle of the room. "You cannot learn to do that simply by reading a textbook. Practice, exercise, experience- these are the key." His face had grown more serious than before, yet there was a zeal in his eyes. "For some of you, this will be the best class of your day. For some, it will be the most strenuous, requiring the most endurance and fortitude." He set a packet on Margot's desk, and she quietly said 'thank you'. "Hopefully, for those people, it will also be the most rewarding. As a teacher, I will try to push you to be your best. I will try to push you to push yourselves. But I am not your enemy." As he said that last sentence, he handed a packet to Zephyr, who obviously was not happy about the fire ball scene. He made his way back to the middle of the room. "My doors are open to you any time of the day. Or night, for that matter. Come and practice in here whenever you like. Come talk to me whenever you wish. I am here to help you. If you are not comfortable with something in my class or otherwise, come talk to me about it." He did not direct this to anyone in particular, but he was not oblivious to the student's responses to the class so far. He sat down on the back of a spare desk. "You all have very different powers, with very different circumstances, and very different needs. Sure, some things everyone will do, but most things will be very you specific. This class isn't about me, it's about you. So I need to know what you are thinking." He indicated towards the packets. It was a questionnaire for them to fill out.

Name:
Date:
Hour:
Grade:
1. Please list your powers, and describe your experience with them.
2. What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weakness?
3. What are your goals for this class? What would you most like to work on, or accomplish?
4. What are you interested in?
5. Is there anything else you would like me to know about you?
6. Are there any questions you have for me?
7. Ancillary space.

After the last question there was a blank page, meant for the students to use as they deemed proper. "Fill it out and hand it back to me some time before the end of the week. If you hand it in to me today, that is great. If you take the whole allotted time, that is great, too."

He sighed, and returned to his desk, setting down the extra papers. “Having students fill out forms is good, but it certainly does not tell me everything. Of course, nothing will. But I need to be able to gauge from the get-go where my students are at, what sort of instincts will take dominance as we move forward, how to, and how far they will let me, push them. This is the reason for the jolting welcome you have received. While it is not always a good way to start class off,” he said this apologetically, more so to Margot and Zephyr, “it is not only a matter of being equipped to teach you well, but also a matter of safety. Moving forward, I will be better able to identify what situations will be helpful, and what situations will be harmful for you. Know that the projectiles I sent at you were the product of a harmless light-refraction illusion technique, not fire.”

By now, Margot seemed to have mostly recovered, though her body was still not fully opaque, and she couldn't fully knock off that jittery, shaky feeling. She looked down at the papers as a pretext for just doing something other than simply sitting there, briefly skimming the questions. Obviously, she would have to consult her French-English dictionary for the last one, Ancillary space, later. While the fireball thing-- specifically being thrust into invisibility, period-- was jarring, she knew that that was one of the biggest things that she hoped to overcome while she was here. While she couldn't say that she appreciated what had just happened in the slightest, she couldn't quite say that she was mad at the teacher for doing it, either. She had no way of controlling it, and knew from the years she spent trying that she wouldn't be able to bring it out of herself on her own. She had a pencil with her, but after that, couldn't bring her focus in to start filling it out. She toyed with it in her fingers, then finally looked up at the others in the room. Zephyr and Aly's reactions couldn't have been more opposite, she noted, like fire and ice. Both, however, were completely justifiable.

Aly glanced down at the paper. She felt like filling out a form was a bit... childish... but if it would help the teacher get to know her better, it would be worth it.

She picked up her pencil and began to write.

Name: Aly Amelia Ivanka
Date: February 3
Hour: First
Grade: Ninth
1. Please list your powers, and describe your experience with them. I can control fire; by that I mean create, extinguish, enlarge, weaken, move, and shape it. My experiences haven't been very good so far. My parents thought I was being possessed by a demon, actually. Maybe I was, but I don't know. I have found that the thirstier I am, the harder it it to create a large flame, and more I create, the thirstier I get. The size of my flame also depends on the current warmth of the room I am in.

2. What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weakness? My greatest strength... I would say that I am resourceful, and that I have much wilderness survival experience. I can also adapt to many different situations. Weakness... I can be too reliant on my powers. When I can't use them, I don't know what to do, and I become really timid and scared. They give me my courage, in a way.

3. What are your goals for this class? What would you most like to work on, or accomplish? I hope that by the end of these classes, I will have full control of my powers. I hope to be able to use them at will, and with perfect precision. I don't want anyone to ever have cause to fear me... unless it's completely necessary.

4. What are you interested in? I have always enjoyed the musical arts; I play the violin, and I sing occasionally. It would be very interesting to know if my powers are connected to this.

5. Is there anything else you would like me to know about you? Sometimes, when I use my powers or when I get emotional, my hair catches on fire. This is perfectly safe for me... but probably not for others. Just thought you ought to know. Also, I don't have full control over my powers when I'm angry. I mean, I usually lose control completely. One time, I started a full-blown forest fire...

6. Are there any questions you have for me? Not really. I'm sure some will come as the class progresses.

7. Ancillary space. I apologize for my lack of school supplies; I've been living in a forest for the past two years, and didn't have the time or money to buy any. Except for this pencil, which someone lent me.

RedAxel When the professor begins to talk, Zephyr finally just sinks into his chair. But that doesn't at all mean that he untenses. In fact, by the force in which he's clenching the hilt of the dagger, you'd think it would split in two. He takes a deep breath, trying to get that feeling like he's going to be attacked to go away.. It's reflexive and instinctive. He's lived like that for quite a long time, to attack when attacked. He places his free hand on the table, palm flat on the middle of it. His wolf ears twitch from under his hat when the professor places the first packet of papers on Aly's desk, and his gaze transfers to it for a moment before settling back on the professor, tracking his progress. Zephyr agrees.. He had tried to learn from books. It hadn't worked. Anything he had accomplished was learned from trial and error, and that isn't much, in his mind. He frowns a bit, spotting the zeal in the professors eyes, but shrugs it off a bit. Despite the..rough..entrance to the class, he doesn't really know.. It could go either way. He might hate this class, but he doubts it. He's always loved discovering new aspects of his powers.. Even if the work involved to find them is exhausting. He tunes back into what the professor is saying. He caught the word 'fortitude.' His ears twitch again from under his hat when the paper is quietly set down on Margot's desk. He murmured something under his breath at the 'not your enemy' part --Sounds like Latin-- but didn't object, and watched as the packet is set down on his desk, his ears giving a final twitch. He raises an eyebrow at the next thing said.. The class will be open at all times? Well, that's good, he supposes. After all, it's hard for him to get any sleep at night..or any other time. So he's often either exhausted, or too tense to feel tired. He blinks, the transfers his gaze to his packet. List powers.. Greatest strength.. Greatest weakness.. Goals.. Preference to what I learn.. Interest.. Additional information about myself.. Questions. He thinks to himself as he scans over the paper, mentally thinking of things to put on it, then looks up at the professor.

A time limit? Well, he'd finish in less than a week, anyway..that isn't really a problem. Though, he has no idea what to use the blank space for. Maybe a drawing of something.. He shakes the thought off, tuning back into what the professor is saying.

He tilts his head a bit, seeing the logic behind forms. It tells what people would like to work on, what they think they aren't very good at.. But it doesn't tell how people learn the best. Then again, most people don't know how they learn the best, in what ways. Slowly, he lets go of the hilt of his dagger and presses his hand flat against the desk in front of him, next to his other hand. Zephyr looks surprised, but not necessarily unexpecting, because he had been expecting it, when the professor says that it had been a test. He sighs a bit, but nods at the professor. He can't really remain mad anymore. Zephyr would have liked to know about this beforehand, but the reactions would have been different had they known about it.. so he approves, though he doesn't appreciate it. He tilts his head a bit at learning that it was only an illusion..it had seemed quite real to him.

He rakes a hand through his hair, then glances around at the other two new people. Aly, who he doesn't know..and Margot, who he vaguely knows. Somehow, the hat stays on his head. He looks down at the paper, scanning through it again, then pulls a pencil out from his pocket, and taps it lightly on the paper, thinking.

Hmm... she thought. Could do with some adornment...

So she started doodling a detailed picture of a dragon, right beneath her words. The dragon was breathing a thin stream of flame directly at the word "pencil", so she drew tips of fire around the word. She smiled slightly.

Hopefully, she wouldn't have to hand this in...

RedAxel Name: Zephyr Retna

Date: February third.

Hour: First period.

Grade: Ninth Grade.

1. Please list your powers, and describe your experience with them. I'm able to turn into a shadow, although this is a recently discovered power and I'm not very used to it. It takes me quite a bit of focus and sometimes it takes me a while to become normal again.

2. What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weakness? My strengths would probably be something like my speed, or my ability to control the element of lightning. My weakness would probably be silver, or the fact that I'm much to quick to attack when I feel threatened..

3. What are your goals for this class? What would you most like to work on, or accomplish? I think I'd like to work on turning into a shadow. Maybe I could discover something new about the power. And maybe increasing the limit of how much lightning I'm able to shoot and direct and control before passing out. And maybe increasing my tolerance for healing.

4. What are you interested in? I love to read, and learning languages is something that has always interested me. I like carving and drawing, although if you wouldn't tell anyone else about that, I'd appreciate it. My art isn't anything special.

5. Is there anything else you would like me to know about you? Maybe if I learn to trust you, I might tell you a few things, but for now, I'll decline.

6. Are there any questions you have for me? Not currently. I'm sure I'll be full of questions later on, though.

7. Ancillary space.

Instead of putting anything important in that space, he begins to draw a wolf on a cliff, with a full moon above and water below.

((Axel, that was fantastic. :) Lol. I'm definitely going from one extreme to the other, at least with the first 'paragraph'...))

Semmorus returned Zephyr's nod with a barely-detectable smile as he carried on with his introduction.

As the other two new students set about filling out their questionnaires, the professor went over and sat in a desk near Margot. They spoke for about five minutes, the noise in the surrounding room drowning out their voices.

Margot saw the professor coming her way and gave a faintly affable smile, setting down the pencil she was toying with and straightening her back. Though she was still a bit on edge, you could not tell by looking at her. She was well disciplined in the art of maintaining an imperturbable facade. Or, more accurately, at inwardly pacifying her emotions, allowing herself to remain resigned, collected, and undeterred in less-than-pleasant situations. This is not this is not to say that she was in any way scheming, putting up fronts to deceive; it was a genuine and natural quality.
“Invisibility,” He commented, sitting down. “Not very helpful when your clothes stay showing, though.”
She shrugged blandly, with just a hint of sheepishness in the gesture. “Not very,” she agreed.
The professor cocked his head at her accent, a bit taken by surprise despite her rather foreign name. “Where are you from?”
“Knobb-Heist, Belgium.”
At this, the conversation began to take on a warmer tone. Professor Semmorus' eyes softened, as he asked, “How long have you been in the states?”
“Only about three months. But most of that has been spent traveling.”
“Sight-seeing?”
Yes... En route here.” The first word was drawn out out, as if she were hesitating, deciding whether or not to go further in explanation or not. Truthfully, she had not been able to afford the connecting flight to come here directly, and had taken a less-than-customary route to get here involving public transit, walking, and occasionally hitch-hiking, which accounted for the unusual length in time.
Professor Semmorus seemed to blame the fact that she was speaking in a foreign language for the hesitation and slightly awkward wording of her answer. He simply said “There are some beautiful things to see in America.” and pursued the subject no further.
He glanced up at one of the clocks, then returned to his original reason for coming over there. “One of our old chemistry teachers worked a lot in developing materials that would be helpful to supernaturals with such abilities, for use in clothing.” He explained. “One of his greatest achievements was the invention of materials that could shift form with the wearer. For instance, turn invisible.”
Margot listened to his words full of interest and surprise.
“I want you to meet our fine arts and sewing teacher, Professor Bronwen. She's been working with our chemistry department, and can fit you out with an ensemble to match your needs.”
She nodded.
“Come back after last hour, and we'll get it sorted out.” He smiled, slightly bowing his head with a momentary old-fashioned, courteous, British finesse, and made his way back to his desk, checking on various students' activities on his way.

Reaching his destination, he leaned back on the front of his desk and crossed his arms over his chest, assuming a relaxed, expectant position. Right on cue, only a few seconds after he had settled in, about a dozen old-fashioned alarm clocks started going off, high up on the top shelves of the classroom, barely visible. Out of no-where, this noise was matched with colorful fireworks that exploded above them-- not with loud booms, but odd whizzing noises. "Class dismissed!" He called out, grinning despite himself at the new student's responses to the spectacle.

RedAxel Zephyr notes the smile, but just looks away, folding the paper two times into a neat square. He looks up at the ceiling as he hears things happening around him, conversations going and people generally work on things that he can't really make sense of yet.

He looks back around the room, his eyes roaming. He's still quite puzzled by this class, practically the opposite of any classroom he's seen. Usually, classrooms are the epitome of order and silence and instructions, but in here, everything seems to be experimental, trial and error. And it seems to be the way the whole class works. He rubs at his eyes, yawning a bit. Zephyr didn't really get much sleep last night, having been too anxious to sleep. And then, all of a sudden, the alarm clocks went off, and he's so startled that he almost falls out of his chair-- And then the fireworks go off and he really does fall out of the chair, but quickly pushes himself back into an upright position, murmuring something. He grabs one strap of his backpack and slings it across his shoulder, waving to the professor and Margot before heading for the exit.

Evelina (EvelinaOfTheElves) | 26 comments Aly jumped into the air when she heard the bell, and her hair momentarily caught on fire. It took her five whole seconds to extinguish it. She could feel everyone's eyes on her, and felt her face go as red as her hair had been. She picked up her form, and shuffled to the front of the room to hand it in to Professor Semmorus, after signing her name on the top with a flourish. She hoped he wouldn't mind her little doodle.

When she was about halfway to the door, she realized that she had forgotten to mention art as one of her interests. She began to turn, but changed her mind.

"See you guys later, I guess," she said to the others, then winced at the sound of her own voice. She hadn't used it much in the last two years... and it sounded scratchy.
