Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments stacia - have you tried Carey's UF series - starts with Dark Currents - kind of a norse mythology meets Michigan

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Same with me about DoSaB. I listened to it though, but loved it from word 1.

message 4604: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Stacia how are you liking Night of Cake and Puppets? I loved that book! So sweet, short and a great complete short story.

I seriously have been want to reading Santa Olivia since like 2011 -- it is has been on multiple kindles of mine. I can't wait to hear your thoughts.

I just started Ashes to Ashes (Experiment in Terror, #8) by Karina Halle Roomies by Tara Altebrando and I started listening to Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors (Jane Jameson, #4) by Molly Harper -- I am so sad this will end the series. I finished today and loved it Nice Girls Don't Live Forever (Jane Jameson, #3) by Molly Harper

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Time to embarrass myself again. The way Laini Taylor writes...the words on the page...I want to feel them in my mouth, to actually speak them out loud. Not many books are written like that any more.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Ashes to Ashes?! jealous!

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Regina wrote: "I am so sad this will end the series. "

She has an offshoot series set in Half Moon Hollow which is pretty good.

The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires (Half Moon Hollow, #1) by Molly Harper A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses (Half Moon Hollow, #2) by Molly Harper Driving Mr. Dead (Half Moon Hollow, #1.5) by Molly Harper I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas (Half-Moon Hollow, #2.5) by Molly Harper

And characters from Half Moon Hollow occasionally show up in Grundy, Alaska.

message 4608: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Thanks Ian. :) I may reread those series. I read them already. Oddly I am reading the Nice Girls series last. I think it is her best.

Yes Wendy! I am off to snuggle in bed and read it! I hope I like it more than come alive. But no need to be jealous. It is going to be released in 4 days!

And Ian I agree. Laini Taylor has talent. I follow her on Pinterest. Her eye for beauty is the same in the visual world. I can see how it translates into the written world.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I can not wait for that release! i better get my reading done so that i'm ready to start that day!

message 4616: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Ian wrote: "And characters from Half Moon Hollow occasionally show up in Grundy, Alaska. "

That was Andrea and Dick in #3, right? I remember reading an interview with Molly Harper where she said vamps were not out and public in the Grundy world b/c she wanted Mo to be shocked and not exposed to the supernatural so I found that weird that it happened. B/c clearly in the Half Moon Hollow world vamps have been outed, so I was surprised at that cross-over.

message 4617: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Ian, here it is (and am I wrong -- was it Andrea and Dick in the 3rd werewolf book?)

Q. Are the Naked Werewolf books set in the same world as the Jane Jameson books?

A. No. I needed the possibility of werewolves exisiting to be a foreign concept for Mo. I needed her disbelief. If she was aware of vampires existence, her disbelief in werewolves would be sort of silly. However, I did want to reward Jane fans, so I hid little Easter eggs in the Naked Werewolf books, referencing the Jane Jameson books. I don’t want to tell you what they are, but you’ll know them when you see them.

(view spoiler)

It's the same world....sort of. You occasionally hear mentions of werewolves in Alaska in tbe Jane Jamison books. I can't remember the exact details but I think Jane shipped some tacky werewolf romance novels from her book store in one of the books.

(added)

I just noticed that the quote was Molly Harper saying they weren't the same world.

Which directly contradicts what she has on her website. :)

I don't know, I haven't listened to it yet. The Half Moon Hollow series is a PNR series and each book and novella features a different hero and heroine, so it will probably be okay. The Jane Jamison series should be read/listened to in order b/c it is more UF and all about Jane in each book.

message 4622: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Regina wrote: "Which directly contradicts what she has on her website. :) "

lol...I'm not going to contradict the author. Maybe a parallel world...like ships that pass in the night. You occasionally get a glimpse from one to the other but they don't cross over...at least they haven't yet.

message 4623: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments There is also another one in the Half Moon Hollow series: Undead Sublet (Half Moon Hollow, #2.5) by Molly Harper

Thank you, Regina.

Do you find the Molly Harper books as addictive as the Jeaniene Frost books?

LOL. No, I mean she has contradicted herself. She says they aren't the same world and then has Andrea and Dick appear -- and Andrea clearly only exists in after vamps are known everywhere (Dick not so much).

Angie, I read the Frost books years ago (I think in 2010), I feel like it was another reading life of mine. :D They are different. They are both funny, but the Frost books are more about action and fighting. The Harper books are more about the relationships between the characters. It is sort of a funny and more creative alternate word of Robyn Carr's books. All of the books are set in a small town and involve characters who generally knew each other their entire life and are dealing with conflicts among them - and then add in the supernatural element. Right now in my life, I much prefer Molly Harper and I don't think her books are petering out in the way that Frost's books did.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Angie wrote: "Do you find the Molly Harper books as addictive as the Jeaniene Frost books?"

I actually walked away from Jeaniene Frost after the first book. It wasn't bad but it just didn't hook me so I didn't continue.

message 4627: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments The humor is different, it is like the humor in Frost is more mean spirited (not sure if this is the right characterization) and Harper's is more self depreciation and funny friend/family situations.

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Read The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman Deliciously creepy.

message 4629: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Tellulah you are always reading what I want to be reading soon -- I love that "deliciously creepy". Is it a fast read?

Friends got an autographed copy for me, so I need to start it.

*grin* I often feel that way about what you're reading. Would love to be reading Ashes to Ashes.

It's a super fast read. I really enjoyed it. It didn't rate as high as Neverwhere or Anansi Boys for me, but a delightful bit of slithery unease. :) Very cool that you have an autographed copy!

message 4631: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Should I read this first? Or Neverwhere?

You can be reading Ashes to Ashes in just a few days!

message 4632: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I think if you only have time for a fast read, go for Ocean. Neverwhere is denser - that said, it's one of my favourite books so I hope you do get a chance to read it soon. And once you do, I'd love to know what you think. There's something so compelling and imaginative about his Underground London world. It's just a great quest story. Tonally, I don't find it creepy like Ocean or Coraline or Graveyard.

message 4633: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Thanks Tellulah. I am flying to NYC in about 10 days and thought that would be a perfect time to read a print book but the FAA just lifted their restrictions and I now won't have to put down my ereader during take-off or landing. So I will have to find another excuse to work in a print book. I find I don't enjoy reading print books as much as ebooks.

I used to scoff at reading off ereaders but I am so converted now. It's my preferred way to read. Books are heavy and awkward. Whine whine reader girl lameness. :)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Tellulah wrote: "Read The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman Deliciously creepy."

Can I ask for a few spoilers? It looks interesting but I can't read books with realistic or graphic violence...and I generally avoid books with sad endings...even a reminiscence of tragedy is something best avoided unless the message is ultimately positive.

message 4636: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I should pick up Harper's Nice Girls series again. I read the first book a few years ago and thought it was fun.

I finished reading Spark (Elemental, #2) by Brigid Kemmerer which I really enjoyed!! I forgot how much I love this author's writing style. I will pick up the next books soon.

Leea | 1437 comments I've missed so much... Finished Attachments by Rainbow Rowell and it was amazing!!

Now i'm going to start The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #2) by Molly Harper . I had to knock down my challenge for this year to 110 books because I don't have much time to read right now.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

message 4639: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Just finished Santa Olivia....oh my. That was good.

message 4640: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Okay, I am so glad you have been reading it I am going to move it up and get to it this month.

I feel so grateful to be a reader right now. All my books I am just loving so much. I am reading Roomies by Tara Altebrando -- and this book is just so emotional for me right now. It is about two girls preparing to go away to college and they have been matched as roommates. They are emailing each other about themselves and their summer. I am loving it.

And then .... Ashes to Ashes (Experiment in Terror, #8) by Karina Halle -- what else is there to say? It is freaky spooky and great Dex and Perry scenes.

Then my audio book is really fabulous, Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors (Jane Jameson, #4) by Molly Harper

message 4642: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments roomies looks cute REgina...I always seemed to get stuck with the weird ppl - I did the ROTC thing, so our roomies were assigned - we had no say any year there...my junior year roomie was my fav (and we are still friends to this day)

message 4646: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments that does look super cute. I'm adding it too.

message 4647: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It was both cute and also emotionally heavy. Both kids are working on saying goodbye to their families and friends -- and newly found boyfriends. The building of the romance between the college-bound kids is really sweet. And the relationship between the two roomies is told through emails. I actually found myself crying a few times! You could see the pain of the parents saying good bye but the excitement in the kids too -- but then the kids were also sad. I remember being sad, I felt pulled -- excited to go away but sad at what I was leaving behind. This book shows all of that really well. It is a quick read.

message 4648: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments The set up of it sounds similar to Attachments. I'm definitely going to get a copy. It sounds cute.

message 4649: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Can you link to that book? I can't find it ...(Attachments)

message 4650: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Attachments by Rainbow Rowell - I just reviewed it. It's another Rainbow Rowell.

They aren't similar in plot, but in that the story is about a man who works as email security and his job is to read emails for a newspaper and make sure they aren't misusing company time. He hates it. Inadvertantly he starts reading emails between two best friends and he slowly falls in love with one just through reading her emails. It was really really sweet. I loved it. Anyway, you get the main character's story, and then the relationship between Beth and Jennifer (the best friends) is all in emails.
