D.G. Marcella - You should be able to just download the file to your computer and from there, you can upload it to Calibre and convert it.

And if that doesn't work for you, you can return the book within 7 days of purchase. It's very easy to do and Amazon won't give you any problems unless you return a bunch of books.

message 3302: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I love calibre. Maybe try some newer versions Dee. I find it very user friendly.

I don't think you can download DG from amazon without the PC app. The only way I have been able to transfer a book to calibre is directly from my kindle or from the PC app.

message 3303: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I've tried the newer ones - just earlier this year...maybe because I don't have to use it all that often - but wasn't impressed

message 3304: by D.G. (new)

D.G. There are some books from the library that transfer to Kindle via USB only and those I've been able to download to my computer without the app. I figure it could work the same with books that are DRM free?

Let me give it a try...

message 3305: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Ahhhh! That would make sense. I have never tried that. How exciting!

message 3306: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I think you may be right, Regina! I tried to get a freebie with my Audible account (which is not linked to my Kindle) and the only option it gave me was 'Deliver to Cloud Reader'.

So Marcella, I think you'll have to download the Kindle for PC app first.

message 3307: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Oh I was so excited. Lol.

Just find where the book is saved (typically a kindle books folder is created during the download process of the app.)

message 3308: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Yeah, I didn't think you could download the purchased book to your computer from amazon.

message 3309: by D.G. (new)

D.G. When I tried with my normal Amazon account (the one connected to my Kindle), it gave me the option of 'Transfer via Computer' (which means, the file will download.) But I don't know what's the deal with that.

I know I've downloaded Kindle files directly to my computer but again, I don't know if that depends on the rights, if you have a Kindle, etc.

message 3310: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments transfer to computer has always been there for normal downloads...then you select which kindle...when they used to charge the $2 international download fee - I would download a bunch, then email them to my mom in a zip file since her kindle is registered to my account

message 3311: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Ah so that means the email option? But an all or device needs to be registered for the account for that.

message 3312: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Question - why not have your friend send a copy of the file? As an ARC or something...

message 3313: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Somehow I had failed to hear about About Last Night by Ruthie Knox but thankfully that oversight has been rectified and I now understand the amazingness that is Nev. My God!

message 3314: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I love Calibre Dee. I am a complete computer idiot and it is so easy to use for me.

message 3315: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Maybe I'm over thinking then

I have that book and have been meaning to read it! I looove the Clark Kent trope (you know, the mild-mannered man who's really Superman inside! Rawr!)

message 3317: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I don't think Calibre is the easiest program to use ever but once you get used to it, it's not too bad. I use it extensively.

Move it up to the top of TBR pile. Seriously!!

message 3319: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Hope this is ok to post here and sorry I didn't post this earlier but I just got online and A Place Beyond Courage (William Marshal, #1) by Elizabeth Chadwick by Elizabeth Chadwick is the Amazon Daily Deal today, Friday 9-13-13, for $1.99. It's a historical fiction novel about William Marshal's father, John, set in 12the century medieval England.

message 3320: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I haven't read About Last Night yet- but RK is pretty much on my auto-buy list

Just added this to my TBR. All I need is another book there but this seemed to good to resist.

That looks interesting, Peggy. Have you read anything by Chadwick before? Is she good? Guess the price is right for checking out an untried author, huh? For me, that is. I'm trying to recall if I've read any books that had William Marshall in it.

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I am starting Remember When (Remember Trilogy, #1) by T. Torrest .

message 3324: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I'm about 30% into The Chief (Highland Guard, #1) by Monica McCarty and I like it. A lot of political stuff right now but it's laying out the foundation for why these men will each join this elite group.

What do you think so far Kay?

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments Leea wrote: "We're starting it today and a few of us tomorrow. Want to join us? We'd love it!"

I wish I could. I'm booked this weekend. I do want to read these, though. I'm a sucker for Highlanders.

@Lisa, Haven't read anything by her but I checked my Kindle and I bought The Greatest Knight (William Marshal, #2) by Elizabeth Chadwick last year as an Amazon Daily Deal but it keeps getting pushed back in the TRB list. Gotta be better at adding books to Goodreads "want to read" list or I forget about them!

I'll be interested to hear what you think, Samantha.

Ahh crap I forgot that we are starting this book. I will start as soon as I can. I started another book last night totally forgetting about this one. What an idiot?

This looks good! But alas our library only has #3 in the series as digital. So disappointed when they don't have complete series! Must be a funding problem.

message 3330: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Leea...I'm only a few chapters in. At the part where (view spoiler)

So far, I'm liking it and it's not very light or fluffy. I haven't gotten too much into the politics just yet but I can tell there a lot to take in.

message 3331: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Kay, I'm a little farther into it just not by much. I loved that scene (view spoiler)

message 3332: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Yes, there's lots of passion and it jumps off the page. I've only read a few books by this author and she's yet to disappoint. I can't wait to read more tonight.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Just starting Shanna by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss and The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon.

Shanna is a monster and kind of intimidating me. Nearly 700 pages. Adding The Bone Season which is 480 pages and it's looking like I'll be busy for a week. Might have to put off the million pages of Outlander for a couple of weeks.

Shanna by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I can't wait to hear what you all think about About Last Night by Ruthie Knox

And in a totally different read - finished The Abomination by Jonathan Holt which was an excellent mystery that takes place in Venice and a virtual Venice. It's book one of a trilogy but felt very self-contained.

message 3336: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Just finished Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews . Darn! I don't know how they do it but they leave me on a audiobook hangover every time. I have like a gazillion audios and don't feel like listening to anything!

I'm midway through Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #8) by J.R. Ward . I'm seriously thinking this will be my last book in this series. The business with Blay and Qhuinn is driving me NUTS and I know this is just the beginning - why people find Qhinn so attractive, I can't tell...he's a such an A-hole!

message 3337: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Don't give up on Qhuinn. He thinks he's unworthy of Blay and doesn't deserve happiness. He really is a good man just self deprecating. All his life he was told by his family that he's flawed just because he was born with two different color eyes and he was treated as such. It's hard to shake off that kind of abuse.

message 3338: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I finished up Tempting Bella which was an ARC from entangled...some how I got on their reviewers list (totally not bummed about that)...lol!

I'm also listening to Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? - kind of tongue in the cheek funny

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 173 comments i finished Lover Avenged which i really enjoyed. i loved Rehv and Ehlena, but i wished there weren't as many side stories. now reading Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #8) by J.R. Ward . this one is starting out pretty good. still has the side stories and is really making me want to read Qhuinn and Blay's story.

Right now, I can't stand him. I don't like characters who use their issues as an excuse to mistreat others. Does he really need to have sex in front of Blay every time? How can you say you love somebody and take every chance you can to hurt them?

Also, the 'I'm not good enough for you' is one of my most hated tropes because it implies that the other person is a child who doesn't know his own mind. YOU have to save him from himself, because you (screw up that you are) know so much better.

Maybe I'll wait a year until I continue with the next book.

Yeah that book drove me crazy!

message 3343: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 159 comments Finished Spectyr (Book of the Order, #2) by Philippa Ballantine which was just average for me. I was a little disappointed by the editing and the direction of the story.

Now I'm going to go back to historical romance since it's been quite a while! So I'll start with Dreaming of You (Gamblers of Craven's, #2) by Lisa Kleypas .

message 3344: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I just finished Remember When (Remember Trilogy, #1) by T. Torrest . Talk about a book that came along at just the right moment. I felt like I needed that book!

Now it is on to Remember When 2 The Sequel (Remember Trilogy, #2) by T. Torrest !

message 3345: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Hi everyone. Miss you. ;)

DG I think he was trying to prove that he wasn't gay, it was beyond just that Blay didn't deserve him. That is how I took it. I agree with you in theory though, I hate the I am not good enough trope and I hate the let me hurt him/her so he/she will go away trope too. But in this storyline I thought it worked. Lover Mine was the last one I truly loved in that series.

I am reading Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis and am really enjoying it.

I just finished the audios of Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews The Book of Blood and Shadow by Robin Wasserman

I am also reading The Love of a Good Woman by Alice Munro

Here's my take on Qhuinn's exhibitionism. I think when giving the business to others in front of Blay he's imagining that its Blay he's giving the business to. He doesn't think he's worthy of Blay so he fantasizes its him. I know it's not logical and he went about it the wrong way but he really is great. He's a little broken. Please give him a chance.

message 3348: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Did I rant about how much I hated Sweet Persuasion (Sweet, #2) by Maya Banks already? I had no problem with the content but I couldn't stand how totally one sided and debasing it seemed while in the end justifying it as "but I'm doing this all for our mutual pleasure and I'm scared of disappointing you." Blech.

Read Dark Places by Gillian Flynn which I enjoyed but nowhere near as much as Gone Girl.

And The Art of Duke Hunting (Royal Entourage, #2) by Sophia Nash had nothing wrong with it but nothing great either.

message 3349: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments That is the last one I still have to read by Flynn, so that is disappointing. I was looking forward to something great. Did you read Sharp Objects? It was brilliant, leagues better than Gone Girl. Gillian Flynn is so insightful.

Re the Maya Banks book, blech is right -- I hate that sort of storyline! I own #1 in that series but that doesn't want to make me read it. I don't like any of Banks' contemporaries. I have yet to find one that catches me!

I keep hearing how great Sharp Objects is, so am going to read that one asap. I'd say still give Dark Places a read though. She doesn't take the story in the obvious direction which is nice and I really was rooting for the protagonist, even though she didn't have any conventional sympathetic traits.
