Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I tend to have a problem with most female characters, lmao. I have realized in recent years that I am REALLY hard on them. They really have to be unique for me to enjoy them. I think it's because a good majority of authors tend to write them all the same way. They want them to be 'fiesty, strongwilled' but when I read them they just come across bitchy.

I'm the opposite of Regina, lmao. A male character really has to suck for me to hate them.

I'm with you, Wendy. A male character has to be pretty bad for me not to like him.

I think my problem with bitchy heroines is that I want to be able to step into a character's shoes, and it makes it hard to do that if you don't like them.

message 3053: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Exactly! I want to relate to them, but when they're being dumb, or bitches, it just makes me angry.

message 3054: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I'm a Stephen King fan from way back - in the late 70s when I first read Salem's Lot and LOVED it! It scared me so bad. After that, I read The Shining, Pet Cemetery and others that I can't recall right now (worked all day and winding down with a Guinness and it's gone straight to my head)- oh Cujo, Christine. And whenever a movie was made based on one of his books, I went to see it. Every single time, the movies just made me laugh - they didn't scare me at all, even the Shining - they were too over the top or something.

Ha ha! Same here Wendy. I tend to be harder on the female characters than the male ones. I can't think of one male character I didn't like. Wow...I am such a book slut.

Since you are Stephen King fan did you read 11/22/63 by Stephen King ?

message 3057: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I'm embarrassed to say that it's still waiting for me on my kindle to read :( After I moved up here to Wash. state from Calif. to live in the woods, in the dark, I got too creeped out after reading so much S.King that I had to quit. While the kids were growing up, I didn't even read much. Now I'm making up for lost time and trying to get thru a huge backlog and my, Stephen King had been busy during my absence!

Have you read 11/22/63, Marcella? Is it good?

message 3058: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I have a uncle that looked (still does) like the character Jack Nicholas played in the Shining, that famous movie poster? yup that was him and he was (is) scary and crazy. That made the movie even scarier for me. I can only watch it in parts.

I still love the idea of being the caretaker of one of those huge old hotels while everyone else is gone over the winter. What a great setting for all kinds of books/movies.

message 3059: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I liked 11/22/63 a lot. For the most part, I haven't read one of his books that I didn't at least like.

I have read the book and I loved it. My only complaint about the book was that it was really long. There's stuff I felt didn't need to be there but overall it was great. Such a unique twist to Kennedy's assassination.

message 3061: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Well, I hope to get it read by Nov. 22 - that will be my goal :)

OMG, Wendy - I'm EXACTLY the same way. I seem to forgive the male characters lots of things but I'm really hard on the ladies! I'm also tired of the 'feisty for the sake of being feisty' character.

message 3064: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Hi everybody, I'm back from Costa Rica! Beautiful country! If you ever have a chance to go, I totally recommend it - just not in the rainy season, LOL!

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Welcome back, DG!

I finished reading Beautiful Girl by Shiloh Walker . My first book by this author and I enjoyed it.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

message 3067: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I'm in a reading funk, can't decide what to read next and/or there are too many options. Plus I do need to read a Traveling book but I have no desire to do so. Basically, i'm having a book hangover. I loved Covet but I can't move past that book.

I wonder if I should read a HR maybe that will set me straight?

message 3068: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I hate ruts, Leea and you know I have funks weekly. HR might do it for you. Maybe pick up a Kleypas book or maybe even Julia Quinn. Have you read some of Lorraine Heath's regency historicals?

message 3069: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments No, I haven't read her Regency's yet. I think it's also because I feel pressure to read the traveling book and pass it along. I have a few arc's Defiant in the Viking's Bed by Joanna Fulford , that I may pick up.

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Hey ladies I have a question. An author's assistant asked me to read and review a book. I've never done this before. When you write the review do you put spoilers? What key points should I discuss in the review? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

message 3075: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I feel like it's been forever since I've read a historical, and now I have an overwhelming urge to read one! I'm going to go with My Wicked Marquess (The Inferno Club, #1) by Gaelen Foley since Gaelen Foley is one of my very favorite historical authors!

message 3076: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Marcella wrote: "Hey ladies I have a question. An author's assistant asked me to read and review a book. I've never done this before. When you write the review do you put spoilers? What key points should I discuss in the review? Any insight is greatly appreciated. "

You should write reviews how you always write them. :) You would think they reached out to you because they read something you wrote and thought you had a good style, perspective, etc.

Stay away from spoilers though and be honest. If you don't like the book, you can let the assistant know it wasn't your cup of tea and ask her if they prefer you not to review it. I don't know if you dnf books but if you do and you don't like it once you start it and are thinking of dnfing it, then let the assistant know as well.

message 3077: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Thanks D.G.! I've never dnf'd a book before. I appreciate the advice. I'm excited to do this.

message 3081: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I finished A Shade of Vampire (A Shade of Vampire, #1) by Bella Forrest which I just fell in love with. I really am looking forward to continuing on with the series.

I am now onto Spook Squad (PsyCop, #7) by Jordan Castillo Price , which I didn't even know came out but thanks to Wendy I now know about. Looking forward to our group read.

message 3082: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Over the weekend I was in a historical western mood so I read Sunflower (Storm Family, #1) by Jill Marie Landis and Mustang Wild (Wild, #1) by Stacey Kayne .

message 3083: by Anita (new)

Anita Anderson | 9 comments I am reading Charlotte Bronte's "Professor".

message 3084: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend... I didn't get much reading in at all. I'm really enjoying The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater about 27% in and it's just starting to really get into the story, feels like more is about to happen.

message 3085: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Since I volunteered helping at our big fire dept garage/bake sale this weekend, I didn't get much reading in either. But I did finish Bitter Night (Horngate Witches, #1) by Diana Pharaoh Francis , our group read, this morning. I've posted my thoughts on that board. The library sent notice that my copy of Death Angel by Linda Howard is in the mail - yay! There seems to be a pattern in the books I've been reading - assassins, witches and angels. I'm half-way thru a reread of Discovery of Witches, so I'm still on the witch theme.

Sad that the Fire Department need to sell cakes to buy safety equipment, while billions of dollars are given to a private company to develop a hover tank which has been shown to be unviable and unnecessary.

message 3091: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Hey, DG, welcome back!

Marcella, I agree with DG's advice: be HONEST! And be as clear as possible about the things that you LIKE and DISLIKE about the book. I usually also include a list of thoughts and questions - either suggestions I have that, IMO, would make the book better or clearer or things that didn't make sense to me or weren't fully explained.

Powered through lots of books over the holiday weekend - finally had endless hours to READ! I did hold off until Sunday to read Spook Squad (PsyCop, #7) by Jordan Castillo Price , and I'm so sad it's already OVER! I'll put thoughts on that thread.

Got a slew of library hard covers over the weekend, too. Finally reading The Passion of the Purple Plumeria (Pink Carnation, #10) by Lauren Willig in the Pink Carnation series, AND got my copy for the Sept read of The MacKade Brothers Rafe and Jared (MacKades #1 & 2) by Nora Roberts .

Finished off The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith and The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon . I wasn't sure about The Bone Season... it took me quite awhile to get into the book, because the author is trying to build a whole new para-sci-fi-alien world, and she uses the info-dump technique. But I'm really glad that I read it, because after the 30% mark, I got into it and by the end, I LOVED it!

Hoping everyone had a safe, relaxing holiday - those in the U.S. anyway.

Thanks Lori! I did the best I could without giving any spoilers away. I am reading Spook Squad (PsyCop, #7) by Jordan Castillo Price . I am liking it. I have missed Vic and Jacob. Look forward to your thoughts. I am about 39% into the book.

I've been feeling the same! Just finished a bunch of Elizabeth Hoyt books and Lisa Kleypas Bowstreet Runners series to curb the urge. Thanks for the suggestion!

I finished Into the Deep (Into the Deep, #1) by Samantha Young and liked it. Wish part two was out already.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I'm starting Misadventures of a Laundry Hag: Skeletons in the Closet and The Mysterious Case of Mr Strangeway. The second is a novella so should be a quick read.

Will start Shanna with Michelle and Michelle this weekend.

The Misadventures of the Laundry Hag Skeletons in the Closet (Laundry Hag #1). by Jennifer L. Hart The Mysterious Case of Mr. Strangeway (The St. Croix Chronicles, #0.5) by Karina Cooper Shanna by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss

Continuing with the Nora Roberts read but I got pissed off by something in the book. I mean really annoyed. ... (view spoiler)

message 3097: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) So... maybe this needs to go in another thread, but what do ya'll think of the casting news of Fifty Shades of Grey: The Movie?

Didn't someone here say that he or she really likes Charlie Hunnam on Sons of Anarchy? I haven't watched the show... and I'm not saying I'm a FSOG fan, but I see SoA on either Netflix or Amazon Prime - might be watching some Charlie H!

message 3098: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I am not really happy about the casting Lori. I do not see either of them in those roles. Maybe when they get into character I will change my mind. As of right now I am not thrilled.

message 3099: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I didn't read them, have no interest at all.

BUT, I absolutely LOVE Charlie Hunnam and I'll go see the movie for him.

Watch SONS! It's awesome!

message 3100: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments You mean Wendy you haven't jumped on the Fifty Shades bandwagon. I loved the trilogy. The first one was a little sketchy but the 2nd and 3rd were great.

Is SOA streaming on Netflix?
