Hello, I will be posting a proposed Reading Schedule towards the end of the week.
The aim is about 100 pages a week, but I think the book has 11 chapters, so I may try and arrange the schedule around those chapters trying to approach the 100/week.
So my estimate is around 7 to 8 weeks reading.

I reckon the starting date will be Monday the 13th of May and finishing may be on Sunday 30th of June, but I will confirm this as I look through the book and design a reading schedule.
I've ordered the book. Looking forward to trying to read on someone else's schedule instead of my own haphazard, random readings. I'm very interested to see how this book compares (for me) to Der Zauberberg, which is one of my favorite novels ever. Just reading a description of the story, I would say it does have a chance that I will like it as much.I commend the organizers of this group read for scheduling it to start well in the future. That should make it convenient for everyone to "clear the decks". (Kalliope & Kris conspired I guess?)
I'm so glad you're joining us, Ted! And yes, Kall and I thought some advance warning on the read would be nice, especially with all the big reads and major individual reading projects people are involved in.
Thanks for the organization, I ordered the book yesterday (hope to have received it by the 13th, but international shipping can be desperately slow sometimes!)
Ok, I have worked out a Reading Schedule.
The book has 11 sections or parts, of different length. Luckily each section also has chapters.
We shall start on the Monday May 13th and attempt to finish by June 30th. This is 7 weeks at a rate of just over 100 pages per week.
Although most people will be reading it in English and the Woods translation, I have not used page numbers and instead the sections and chapters as explained above.
I am proposing the following:
Week 1: May 13 - 19. Read until Part III, beginning of chapter 4.
Week 2: May 20 - 26. Read until Part IV, beginning of chapter 8.
Week 3: May 27 - June 2. Read until Part VI, beginning of chapter 4.
Week 4: June 3 - 9. Read until Part VII, beginning of chapter 6.
Week 5: June 10 - 16. Read until Part VIII, beginning of chapter 9.
Week 6: June 17 - 23. Read until Part X, beginning of chapter 5.
Week 7: June 24 -30. Finish (Part XI until the end of book).
Will post the individual Discussion Threads.

I downloaded the ebook version onto my kobo yesterday. For me this is a long book and I'm not a very fast reader so I have started reading already.I also belong to many groups so i have to organize my reading carefully.
I'm really happy about joining this group. I've read some really great books through joining different groups. Books I otherwise would never have known about. That is the beauty of GR!!

I hear you Laima! And I agree wholeheartedly!!
It's been a long time when I had to read this book for the first time(some 40 years ago, maybe more). It was on my to-read list for German literature when I was at college. I remember telling my mom the story and as she loved to read it I gave her a copy in Dutch. When she passed away I inherited that copy and I would be glad to join the discussion reading the book in Dutch (which I never did).

Oh, this is really helpful - thanks for working it out.

Kalliope #7A couple questions about the reading schedule.
1) When you say "until ... chapter X", does this mean up to the start of that chapter (I would assume), or through the end of that chapter?
2) Seems there might be a mistake in the Week 3 schedule. In my edition this is only about 50 pages, and the Week 4 read is about 150 pages. Perhaps Week 3 should be "until Part VI ..." rather than "until Part V ..."?

Thank you, Ted.
On point 1.... I meant until the start of that chapter.
On point 2 .. you are right, it is Part VI.
Will specify and correct.

Wonderful that you did before the group began... I had marked my book already (prepared on Excel) but typed it incorrectly.

I just updated the title for the Week Three discussion to fix where that week's segment ends -- Kall, when you get a chance you may want to edit your first post there to make that change as well: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
