Trinity (tsundokuproblem) Should I read The Host by Stephenie Meyer? I heard that it's confusing at the beginning and I don't want to waste my money on a book I'll never finish. The size and thickness also scares me. Readers either extremely hate it or absolutely love it, at least that what I observed from reviews.I'm going to the book store this week and I want to have in mind what book I should get. Should I get The Host? Do you recommend anything else?

Trisha | 30284 comments this is always such a tough thing for me.

On one hand, I want to say YES!!! READ IT!!! Because the book was amazing.

but it does start off slow, about 200 pages of world building. It's hard to slog through, but its good - you need that build up.

because the love story and their struggles are so good!

And I'm also a HUGE "read the book before you see the movie" kind of person.

But books are such personal things....I thought the size of the book, time spent reading it, was all worth the story. I don't know that you would, but I hope you would :)

Kay (read-always) This is one of my Favs!! I liked this book better then the twilight saga

Gino Alfonso | 186 comments Definitely read, I want to re-read before the movie comes out this summer it's so different from Twilight, it doesn't even feel like her. I still want to read J.K. Rowling's first adult novel to see if she did just as well!

Yoly | 642 comments I was just like you, but some of the people in this group recommend me to read it and it was really good, even with the fact that I never read twilight and I saw the second movie and I hate it. I love sci-fi books and I really like the plot of this one. The love part is good and no too much "crazy romance" or "love triangu".

Angela | 17461 comments My friend recommended this to me, but I haven't read it yet. I already have it though. I'm just hesitant to start it because it's from the same author who wrote the Twilight series, and I wasn't a fan of it.

Megan | 2871 comments I read this a year after it came out, so it's been awhile. But I thought that it was good- better than Twilight. It was a little slow at first then it got really good. I'll probably re-read it before I see the movie.

Ashley Reads (summerfirefly) | 370 comments I loved The Host! I didn't want to read another Stephanie Meyer book, but my aunt convinced me anyway and I'm so glad I did. I definitely recommend it. I loved the movie too. Now I'm hoping to reread the book in the summer while I'm waiting for the sequel to come out.

I definitely enjoyed it. I read it in a weekend but not as quickly as the Twilight novels but that is because it was not part of a series so all character development needed to be shoved into the first 1/3 of The Host. I recommend it 100%.

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) Stephenie Meyer needs to write a sequel for this. I haven't read the book but I watched the movie yesterday. It's better than the Twilight Saga.

Tylee Britton-Havard (tyleebritton) Ok it's a little confusing in beginning but it explains as the story goes on. Favorite book.

J.S. Frankel | 410 comments I read it to see what the excitement was all about. As others have said, Meyers takes a long time to build her world...a little too long, IMHO. The character of Wanda is pretty well developed, but Melanie seems sort of tossed in there and not fully fleshed out. It was a decent read...but a bit overlong.

message 13: by Elif (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elif (angelus_mortis) | 3 comments When I thought Twilight Saga, I didn't expect so much from this book, but it was amazing. The conversations between Wanda and Melanie, and the character of Wanda...

I totally agree - it was really slow to start! Once it got going and you met more of the characters, I think it was really good. But you had to trudge through so much to get there I'm not sure it was worth it in the end.

Michael Thal (goodreadscommichael_thal) | 30 comments I agree with Tracy and Trisha. If you don't grab the reader from the very first page, you'll lose her. Few people will plow through 200 pages of world building.

That's where it lost me. I couldn't get through the slow beginning.

Sharlene (sharlenehuriwai) | 148 comments I listened to the unabridged audiobook which was took me forever but was probably easier to get into because the narrator used different voices for Melanie & Wanda. Meyer really sets the scene at the start and I think drags out some areas because they are in despair. It does get better towards the end with the other characters once you get there.

I was so disappointed by the movie. It just cuts big chunks of the book out.

Liz | 2 comments Definitely buy this book!! It's one of my favourites and yes I have to admit the beginning was a little slow but once you got into it it was so worth it!! The book seems long but once you're finished u want there to be more, it took me 2 days to read and I wish I had made it last!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 214 comments Liz wrote: "Definitely buy this book!! It's one of my favourites and yes I have to admit the beginning was a little slow but once you got into it it was so worth it!! The book seems long but once you're finish..."

Agreed, once you get into it it's hard to put down :)

Aieshi (aieshijain) i ordered it yesterday and am still not sure whether to read it or not.. can someone pls tell me if its an adult book as according to its publishers, it is stated adult. i heard all reviews about it good and bad but is it really worth reading???

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 214 comments It felt much more YA to me than adult, but technically I think they classify it as adult. I thought it was an awesome book though!

Sharlene (sharlenehuriwai) | 148 comments yeah it's adult.

message 23: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Winters I honestly did not really like it. It went very slowly for me. I usually finish a book in under one week, yet this one took me about 2 weeks just to force myself to read the first 100 pages.

Aieshi (aieshijain) i have read it more than half and to those of you who think its adult are mistaken. Its completely young adult and though i found it a bit complicated in beginning but i feel its going just good!.. Recommended to all young adult genres lovers..

Cassie Whitfield | 8 comments I actually liked the Twilight series better than this book (well, except for New Moon!), but it was still a really good book. It certainly has a different feel to it than Meyers' other novels, but definitely worth the read (and worth getting through the long, slow-burn start!).

Melinda Friesen (melindafriesen) | 5 comments They're now classifying The Host as New Adult. The category didn't really exist when it was written, but there are more and more books hitting the college aged crowd and this was one of the first to smack that niche between the eyes. I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone.

Tonya Powell | 22 comments It was a good book. The ending was slightly not what I would write but whatever. It's been awhile since I read the book so I don't remember every little detail. It's one book that I actually only read once. Usually I read books a whole bunch of times. I may read it again once I finish reading every other book that I'm the middle of right now.

message 28: by Amber (new) - added it

Amber Payseno I tried to read this book, but I couldn't get past the first twenty pages without snoozing.

I kept the book in hopes of being able to read it some other time, but I still haven't picked it up.

Matty | 469 comments I tried reading it but i couldn't get into it, so I started reading another book lol I still have yet to pick it back up to finish what I started

Tanaka K (tanaka_k) i read it twice. i loved it but the first few chapters drag a bit and it takes long to get to the action of the book. its an interesting book..dont be intimidated by the thickness of the book.once you get into the book you will absolutely love it..i did :)

Krista | 1550 comments When this book first came out I read it about half way through and got disinterested. I have not tried to read it since, which is unusual for me because I really do try to not give up on books.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

This book is one of those guilty pleasures of mine. Its not amazing and its not exceptionally written. But it is super entertaining and I enjoyed reading it.

Hannah Woods | 4 comments Did you ever read it, Trinity?

I read it a long time ago. It was okay. Slow in places and I felt the love story was quite weak. Despite this, it was still entertaining, but not as good as Twilight.

I wonder whether it would've been published at all (and certainly turned into a film) if Stephanie Meyer had not already been famous!

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

That is a good point Hannah! I agree that it may not have been published if it weren't for the twilight series already being popular!

message 35: by Krista (new) - added it

Krista | 1550 comments I would have to agree as well.

Christine Kirchoff (christine_anna_kirchoff) I just finished reading this book. It was fantastic! I didn't like Twilight so I was kind of skeptical about The Host. So glad I bought it. One of my favorites :)

Ilana (iscm13) | 33 comments i really enjoyed it and i wish that the wait for the next one in the series wasn't taking so long. i feel like it's been over 5 years since i read the first one so that means that it's not even quite top of mind to e (even with the movie) since i've invested myself with these characters. i'd have to go back and re-read it, but i think that the story line is intriguing enough to warrant you reading it if you haven't already.

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) I haven't read this but I've watched the movie adaptation and I really like it. I hope Stephenie Meyer will publish the sequels. I'll be reading this soon.. hoping the sequels will be published..soon

Kawaii_bany | 34 comments There is a sequel?! I didn't know that.
'The Host' was one of my birthday gifts a couple years ago. I didn't know what to expect, so the book just stayed on my bookshelf for over a year. Then one day I decided to read it before I watch the movie. I'm glad I did it! I really liked it! It's a little bit slow in the beginning, but after that it was amazing ;)
