Brandon Smith- Scolaro The Book, I find the book truly showcases how despicable the character is compared to the more romanticized musical. I understand people feel pity for the character for some reason. But I still don't think having a disfigured face gives you the right to act all bat shit insane.

I love the Leroux novel and the Lloyd Webber Musical, I can't stand the 2004 movie

Claire The book is definitely my favorite version. It was my first Phantom, and it's my favorite depiction of Erik.

My second favorite is the musical, specifically the one performed in the Royal Albert Hall. The musical in general is kind of cheesy and REALLY whitewashes Erik's character, but it's still fun and dramatic and has awesome music.

My third favorite is the Lon Chaney film, only because they made Erik look genuinely deformed, and not like some emo pretty-boy with a rash.

Speaking of emo pretty-boys with rashes, I really don't care for the 2004 film version. It's everything that was cheesy about the musical, made worse with even MORE whitewashing and cheap Hollywood glitz. To its credit though, it DOES have some really nice costumes and set pieces.

I totally agree with your Claire, on nearly everything!

Except that I don't find the musical too cheesy (even though I know what you mean!) and I don't like the 2004 costumes too much. Yes, they look nice, but they are 1. very unrealistic, 2. have bad materials (Christine's masquerade dress...) and are unnecessarily sexy, because Joel Schumacher wanted to sexualize everything. The story itself is sexual enough *cough*

Stage version ... I saw it off-Broadway in Denver years ago, and there's nothing quite like the stage version. I wish movie versions came closer to it!

Iris I liked the movie, but the 1920-something silent version. It was creepy, musical and romantic. I love it!

Then its the broadway version because you feel like a character in the story. It was magical.

Amy The movie version at the Royal Albert Hall for their 25th anniversary show! Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo have amazing chemistry and they are the best Phantom and Christine ever! And Hadley Fraser is the best Raoul!
