Alicia (slippyoink) | 5 comments I bought a chair from a dude on craigslist (which is why I can't get more info from him!) and we ended up in a conversation about the most unique books we'd read. He mentioned one a friend told him about where each chapter is written about an hour in a day, with the chapter meant to be read in that actual hour of the day. It was almost definitely fiction and possibly slightly suspenseful. Can someone pretty please help? I've tried google and a few librarian friends of mine with no luck.

Perhaps it's on this list.

Michelle | 37 comments I immediately thought of Ulysses, as well. Can't think of any other titles, but will go exploring and see if I come across something that might help. :-)

Michelle | 37 comments I came across the title "One Day" by David Nicholls - which covers a single day in the lives of two people over 20 years. It sounds like each chapter is a day rather than an hour, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Michelle | 37 comments There's also Under the Volcano, by Malcolm Lowry. All but one chapter takes place over the course of a single day.

Lisa Bobo | 2 comments I can tell you it's not One Day, which is very good. I hope that's a little helpful.

Alicia (slippyoink) | 5 comments Thanks for all the help! I'm digging through that list to see if anything rings a bell (especially on the "read it during the hour it's written" part) so I'll update if it's any of those.

Laina (lshockley) | 196 comments Hi Alicia! Both Ulysses and Under the Volcano do take place over one day, but the chapters and plot are not related to the hours as you describe. Good luck!

Sophie (notemily) | 477 comments A Book of Hours?

ETA: Description: A Book of Hours contains 24 essays, one for each hour of the day, that seek to bridge the gap between definitive scientific philosophy and the sheer unadulterated beauty that Donald Culross Peattie envisioned within everyday life.

Haven't read it, but ran across it in a thrift store today.

Alicia (slippyoink) | 5 comments I am still looking, unfortunately. Local librarian mentioned a possibility but it wasn't it. Someday I'll stumble upon it and it'll feel like finding a treasure!

Alicia (slippyoink) | 5 comments Wait, just saw Sophie's comment and am going to give that a try! at the very least, it looks very interesting!

Alicia--what was the book that the local librarian suggested? That will give us more ideas of places/authors to look for.

Thomas (verkisto) | 25 comments Abarat is set partly in a world where the islands represent the hours of the day, and the story progresses through those islands in that order. It's not quite what you're asking, but in the same ballpark. Plus, Clive Barker's stuff is typically unique.
