BookLover6767 This is one of my favourtie Palahniuk novels, second only to Survivor. I absolutely love how gruesome it is. I know a lot of people who read this book find the self mutilation to be unrealistic, and it is, but I think it speaks to just how low humanity can sink for fame.

Rafael (r_dominic) I recently started reading this, it's rated 10th on the "The Most Disturbing Book Ever Written" list. This does not bode well, I am known for chickening out of scary situations.

Update 1: I am now on chapter two. I...... I don't know what to say.... Heed my warning, this book is not for the faint of heart.

Update 2: I am now on chapter six, chapter five really sickened me. As my faith in humanity ebbs, I grow more and more depressed.

Update 3: I am now on chapter nineteen, this is taking really long. The only reason I keep reading, is because I want to see all of them die in the end, to be forever forgotten. I really hope they all die, am I too cruel? Am I missing some great philosophical point in this book?

Kristen Sorrell | 20 comments I was not excited about this book, since I don't really do horror. I have to say, though, I'm curious now. Hopefully the mail lady will bring my copy shortly.

Mutasem (mutdmour) | 6 comments I enjoyed it. It was fun to see what scenes make me cringe and what did not. There were two that got me: "Guts" and when that guy cut his own dick. Also when one of the women removed her own finger nails. Other than that, I had a stomach of steel.
There were some really interesting ideas there. My favorite was "Humanity's first commandment: something needs to happen."
Collections of stories is not my thing though. Too many breaks.

I agree that something needs to happen, but I'm young, I'm optimistic, I only want good things to happen. I don't consider war, suffering, or death to be good things. I don't consider any character in that book, "good" I guess that is what bothers me in that book, everyone is horrible.

Still not done btw, still readingggggg........

Brevemike | 9 comments About halfway through the book. I guess I've been exposed to too much human depravity as nothing I've read here has even been mildly surprising.

Tough to read because - so far - all the characters are stupid, mentally ill, or both.

Brevemike | 9 comments Ok, done.
Bored.

I guess I just don't find mental illness entertaining.

There were a few choice quotes throughout the book. Certainly not enough for me to recommend anyone actually read it.

More entertaining and better written than No Country for Old Men, but a complete slogfest for trying to read. Had to force myself to keep going back to the book. What should have been a three day read took a week and a half because I just didn't want to read it. Felt like being back in high school lit class.

All righty then! On to the next! :-)

Rachael Guerrero | 5 comments This book took me so long to finish! When I really like a book, I am done in 2-3 days. This took a whole 7. I only kept reading as I really liked the movie "Fight Club" and was expecting some really cool ending. I was very disappointed. The characters were all deranged lunatics that I could just not relate to in any way. I did enjoy the story "Civil Twilight" though. It felt the most human to me and actually made sense. I am willing to give Chuck another try, as I have heard that "Survivor" is a good read. We will see . . .

Rafael (r_dominic) Yeah, 7 days, that's about right, I'm finally done with this book. It's clearly not meant to be taken literally, it took me a good long while to figure that one out. I really enjoyed the part where Mr Whittier came back and opened the door, the whole book would have made sense to me if it ended right there. Everything after that point was depressing. Maybe the writer was trying to make a point, that humanity might stay in the dark forever, endlessly searching for a purpose that might not be there.

Screw that! We don't need a greater purpose! Do what makes you happy, get along, love each other.
