Shamma8 Hey everybody who read the books , do you think it's ok to start reading the second book right after the movie ? Or will I miss a lot ? I mean I like to start a series always with the first book but I just can't wait to know what happens , your thoughts ?

Guille Puerto There's only one book, and it is quite short.

Nina The Hobbit is only one book (but three movies) :-)
So, you can read this one -and there is no need to skip any chapters ;-)

Shamma8 LOOOOOOOOOOOL OMG I didn't even bother to check hahahahahaha , well this discussion looks stupid now , damn it Peter Jackson for confusing me , we'll this is just a waste of time sorry guys XD

Shamma8 351 pages only and 3 freaking movies !!!! By god !

C.C. It's unclear what exactly you are asking. The Hobbit is a self-contained story printed as a single book. The Lord of the Rings trilogy follow The Hobbit and have related characters, but are largely independent. So, if you watched the first Hobbit movie, then you know part of the story of this single book. The next two movies will also be adapting this same book. So if you want to read The Hobbit, then you could skip a number of chapters based on the movie, but the book isn't that long, so I would go ahead and read the whole thing. I hope that answers your question.

Shamma8 I'm sorry no I thought it was more than one , my bad

This is because the movies are including lots of detailed scenes of most parts of the book.

If it had only been one movie, many parts would have been omitted or skimmed over, whereas with making 3 movies, they can put just about all of it in.

This should make people happy - everyone usually complains that "things were left out" and "why didn't they put that in the movie?" etc etc.

At the end of the last movie we should have seen a very close adaption of the book.

Shamma8 I'm really happy that they're making it a trilogy because it is awesome honestly , Peter Jackson is a genius director

kelley I think the 2nd movie will have two story lines. One will follow Bilbo and the Dwarves through the Northern end of Mirkwood. The other will follow Gandalf and the White Council to the Southern end of Mirkwood to expell the Necromancer. This second story line is not in "The Hobbit" but is found in the appendix at the end of "The Lord of the Rings". Does anyone else think this?

Jess Mountifield Kelley, that was actually confirmed somewhere and looking at the trailers for the film, it very much looks like it too. Otherwise Gandalf wouldn't be in much more than the first ten minutes of film two and the end of film three. It also wouldn't have made sense to have casted the Necromancer as a major actor if they weren't using the appendix from LOTR.

kelley Jess--thanks for confirming that. I think it's a great addition to the story.

To be fair, it would look more stupid if the idea of turning one children's book into three huge films wasn't quite so absurd to begin with. I can't believe they left Tom Bombadil out of Lord of the Rings, but are actually padding The Hobbit out with extra stuff.

That said, the plot of the book was fairly episodic, so it doesn't matter to me that the films won't follow it exactly. Also, An Unexpected Journey certainly was fun to watch. I imagine it wouldn't matter too much what order you read/watch these things, but I wouldn't recommend skipping any of the book. It's not that long anyway.

Shamma8 I won't skip anything it's just 351 pages I can finish it in an hour or two

Drew It's one book but The Lord of the rings come after it, I think you can skip it And start reading lord of the rings I wouldn't though its not THAT big of a book.

C. J. Scurria To S-The-Great: Supposedly there is a moderator to every book and for some reason they don't react right away when you want to delete it.

I had that happen when a thread I created I became bored with. The strange thing is though when it is off of the visible thread on the discussions on the main wall it is still accessible by the book link itself (I discovered this with my topic I wanted to delete) I don't know. I would suggest going over to this topic and trying to delete it again and again. Maybe the moderator will get the message.

Paul Harmon Re: non-deletion....have you tried turning it off and on again? :)

Sorrel You can delete it if you go onto edit and then you click on the topic and hit the delete button on the key board. That's how I did it once :-)

Sorrel What? I created the topic that I deleted so... I'm not sure. However, it only worked on one that I did so... Maybe you ave to have it open for a set period of time before deleting?

Sorrel I think I figured it out... There has to be zero comments on it?

Sorrel Cool :-)

Shamma8 I think the only option there is now is to do as CJ says , which is annoy the hell out of the moderator , until he kindly decides that today is the day he blesses me with a deleted topic .. If that doesnt work theeen i will try Sorrel's idea.. if either (or neither) proves successful , you guys will know , thanks for trying to help , much appreciated

What ? How do you do that ?!? And no I didn't

Tom Dale This is the funniest thread yet. How can anyone ignore it with a subject line like that? Rename it to something incredibly uninteresting.. like.. hmm. Now there's an interesting question.

Michael Rename it "pls moderator, turn this one off" or something like that :)

Paul Vincent Aw, don't delete it. I'm enjoying this thread and want to see where it heads next!

Maybe we should have a vote on whether this thread gets deleted or not?
