The descriptions of the silences, I love it so much.I can hear the differences between them, can FEEL them, and how they layer together to create this sad, heavy place.
Pat is such a master of setting the scene.
(I'm reading on an ebook, will you remind how many chapters are in the first part, the ebook is not divided that way.)
By part 1, I guess I meant week 1? So up to 25% through.
I agree. I forgot how much I really liked the description in the beginning. Its also a completely different experience for me this time, because the first time my husband and I read it aloud together.
I also think there could be some discussion of whether Kvothe tends to be a little Mary-Sueish. I don't think that makes him any less of a character, but he is definitely amazing at EVERYTHING AT ALL TIMES.

He definitely IS a bit, yeah. it's interesting because that's what ends up being his downfall sometimes? that he's too confident in his abilities? but it's still pretty unrealistic how quickly he becomes proficient at things. oh well, i guess you can't build a living legend out of mediocre.actually, maybe you can. kvothe is, after all, a story-teller, and maybe he's a bit of an unreliable narrator? we know he's arrogant, but we assume he's being entirely honest and factual in the retelling. maybe that's just how he remembers events. I bet the instructors, at least, would roll their eyes and have a slightly different version to tell us.
so how will this work then? do we read 25% and then talk about it up to that point, or do we talk about it as we're reading an thoughts come up?
I think we can talk about it as we read, so long as we appropriately tag spoilers. Sound fair?
And hmmm.. that's an interesting point. I was thinking about the fact that Kvothe doesn't often get called a Marty Stu, even though anytime a girl acts the same way she does, and I was wondering if that has to deal with him being a male. But MAYBE its just that he is an unreliable narrator, and he does seem arrogant and self-involved. I definitely think thats an interesting way to read the story-and now thats all I will be thinking about when I keep reading.

I'm at the part where he gets lost in the city and every time I read this I'm like DANG IT YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE WITH THAT FARMER.
OH MY GOSH I'M SO SORRY I RANDOMLY DROPPED OUT OF THE DISCUSSION I GOT REALLY BUSY AT SCHOOL YOU MUST BE LIKE PRETTY MUCH DONE WITH THE BOOK BY NOW I'M SORRYI KNOW whenever I read that part it's like NO KVOTHE WHAT ARE YOU KVOTHE DON'T BE DUMB
but then he's dumb
it's also interesting to me that he didn't latch onto the kindness, if I was a recently orphaned child I would attach myself to the first adult who offered kindness and never let go
I actually meant to post on my blog, because I am running a bit behind, and I am thinking of somewhat-restarting. By behind, I mean I am on page 130, or so.
I KNOW. JUST ACCEPT HELP. I always wander that though, with the don't accept charity thing. I mean, I get the concept, but at the same time, TAKE THE MONEY.

People's stupid pride always rankles me and that wad one thing that bugged the snout out of me about Kvothe. All these people wanted to help him and he never let them. Well, rarely.
One of the reasons he doesn't latch on to people's kindness is because of the 3 years he spent in Tarbean. He was a begged then. Having to rely on people's kindness will only take him back to those the days and the events that led him there.
