Or did you see the movie first then read the book?

message 2: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) I wasn't allowed to watch the movies until I'd read the books (:

Oh, I see :)
Me, I watched the movies first, then read the books.

Did you like the books better or the movies?

message 4: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Books are ALWAYS better than movies xD It's a known fact (: And yeah, it's a family tradition (:

I agree, but the movies were awesome too. Nothing compared to the books though. :)
The books get into more detail and history, and the movies didn't even stay entirely true to the books on some parts. Hey, but what movie does, you know? haha.

message 6: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Ikr (:

Haha, yes. I haven't seen one movie really that didn't change the story of the book it was based on.
They always damage it with their own ideas.
But anyway, what are some of your other favorite books if I may ask? :)

message 8: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Of course you can ask! :) Haha. Umm ... quite a few other classics ;) Pride and Prejudice, Sherlock Holmes, Watership down, The Hobbit (obviously) ... and there's a whole lot more on my favourites shelf, if you wanna look. Haha. You?

Well, a few that come to mind are Dracula, The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe, The Silmarillion :),and Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. But I also really love some of the Folklore books I have read a long time ago, which I believe I have on my favorites list as well.
What about movies? What are some of your favorite movies? :)

message 10: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Hmm .. Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit ... other than those, War Horse, and Mission Impossible 4. I also love Pride and Prejudice 1995 (it's 6 hours long! ^^) and currently watching Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes.

:D You?

Haha, nice :)
Oh, wow. I'm a movie freak. I'm not even kidding.
Lord of the Rings, Titanic, The Beautiful country, Queen of the Damned, Interview with the Vampire, Suspicion (1941), Dracula, Elizabeth, Valmont.
Umm... I have a lot of others that aren't coming to mind right now. But those are just a few haha :P
I love older movies mostly. I'm not so much for today's stuff.
Do you like any movies from the 40's or 50's?

message 12: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) I love movies, too xD

Mmm ... hold on, I'm bad with dates xD Not really (: I've watched most of Gone with the Wind which is, I believe, '39 ... but other than that, not really xD.

Ah, well they are very good movies from a very good time. I love movies from the 30's as well.
What about music? What type of music are you into?

message 14: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Haha! You have an unlimited supply of interesting questions, Iris :)

I'm not really 'into' any type of music ... xD Everyone asks me "Who's you're favourite artist?" or, "What's your favourite type of music?" but the answer is ... I don't really have one xD. Don't get me wrong - I love music. I play the piano, too. But I just kind of pick up songs here and there that I like, regardless of the genre or artist :P. I like soundtracks, too xD.

Oh, I see :)
I'm kind of the same way. I listen to different types of things. It depends on my mood really.
Classical music is one of my favorites, though, I can say. I also enjoy Folk metal. It kind of reminds me of The Lord of the Rings :)
And cool you play the piano! I play violin.

And haha, yes. I suppose I do. :)

message 16: by johanna (jo) (new)

I also love the flute.
What are some of your favorite instruments?

Rachael | 26 comments I saw the movies several times before I read the books. I even watched all of the hours of special features. Perhaps my great love for the movies is what caused me to actually like them better than I liked the books when I finally read them, and I've only read them once, as opposed to watching and thinking about the movies for hours on end.

On a side note, I do think there is at least one movie that was a whole ton better than the book.....and that is How to Train your Dragon. The book was terrible in my opinion whereas the movie was amazing.

message 19: by UsefulCard (new)

UsefulCard (usefulcardmaster) | 1 comments Saw the movie first (because my parents took me to see it when I was younger).
BUT if I'd had a choice... would have DEFINITELY read the book first...

message 20: by Glorious (new)

Glorious (sunrequiem) | 17 comments I read the books during the second half of last year (2015) and then watched the movies directly afterward, I was so excited! Unfortunately I didn't leave my family a choice, I had them all watch it with me even though none of them had read the books. But now we are a proud family of fans.
As for which I like better, I think that the original book obviously had to be really really good as a prerequisite in order to inspire an amazing movie, and I think PJ did a lot of justice to the spirit of the story, so I don't have a direct answer to that question. I've rewatched and reread both the books and the movies several times now!
Some of my other favorite books are Letters to a Young Poet, The Little Prince, The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, The Silmarillion, and Kira-Kira. Oh, I really enjoy Shakespeare as well.
My favorite movie is called The Fountain. I also belong to the Star Wars fandom and I looooove Benny and Joon.
This is getting to be a pretty long response, but my principle instrument is the violin! I have a really broad range of musical tastes though.

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 132 comments Well, here's how it all started.

So my two older sisters read the Hobbit for required reading when they were in 10th grade or something. When my oldest sister saw that there was a Hobbit movie she wanted to see it. So did my older sister and my dad, who read it in high school too. My two younger siblings, my mom and I just went along. After seeing it, since I hadn't yet read the book, I loved it. We saw the two others when they came out, and my oldest sister forced me to read it. I loved the book even more.

So then my oldest sister read Fellowship, and my older sister wanted to read it before the movie. I didn't even know what it was, so I just watched the movie with them all. Let me tell you-that movie got me so addicted. Then my older sisters read Towers, and we all watched the movie. Oh my goodness. I love that movie. Then my oldest sister read Return of the King, but my older sister didn't have any time to read it. So I grabbed our edition of LOTR with all three combined, and I read all three. Took me two months for FOTR, one month for TTT, and three days for ROTK. TTT ended up being my favorite. So after my sister finally read the book,we watched the incredible movie, in which I started crying at Theoden's death and didn't stop until I fell asleep about 45 minutes after the movie.

If I knew what LOTR was, I would've definitely read the books first. I also like Narnia, The Hobbit, The Children of Hurin, and I'm gonna read the Silmarillion. Since Gloria mentioned it, I play the piano, clarinet, and am about to start cello lessons soon.

Hey, I like Kira-Kira too!

message 22: by Mary Grace (new)

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 132 comments I mostly listen to LOTR and Hobbit soundtrack, but my favorite people of all time are ThePianoGuys. In listening to them right now. I'm so addicted to them. They inspired me to learn cello, actually! I also just love classical music. Mozart's Lacrimosa is stunning, I suggest you listen to it if you haven't already. Also love Vivaldi.

message 23: by Glorious (new)

Glorious (sunrequiem) | 17 comments @Tolkienite3791: Good for you, you got exposed to Tolkien so early! I really wish someone had done the same to me when I was little. I feel like I've been missing out on so much. It literally took me a weekend to read FOTR, I fell in love with the story immediately, about a week for TTT, and a little over a month for ROTK (I was bogged down with schoolwork at the time). I think I recall that almost immediately afterwards I picked up The Silmarillion and finished it over the course of a month, so I guess I made up for lost time pretty well, haha.

I also love Narnia! I read the whole series for the first time over the course of five days last year in early December. I'm glad I did, I only read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe and The Silver Chair when I was little. And did you know that CSL writes great sci-fi too? Plus he had an amazing friendship with JRRT. We probably would never had known about Middle-Earth or Narnia if it weren't for that relationship. <3

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 132 comments I did know that they were friends!! So awesome, two brilliant geniuses!

What did you think of the Silmarillion? I want to read it, should I? And wow you're a fast reader! :)

message 25: by Glorious (new)

Glorious (sunrequiem) | 17 comments The Silmarillion - five stars, for sure! It's genius, deeply moving, epic, and borderline tedious for all the names and places, but if you're a hard-core fan already, go for it!

I love ThePianoGuys! They did a Lord of the Rings medley too. I love Lindsey Stirling as well (who also did a Lord of the Rings medley).

I'll be sure to read The Silmarillion!! Thanks!

I've been lucky enough to attend a college that ThePianoGuys have come and performed at so I've seen them perform live three times. I'm just crossing my fingers that they'll come one more time before I graduate. I've seen Lindsey Stirling live once because she came to the college as well, truthfully she used too many flashing lights so I didn't like hers' as much as ThePianoGuys. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful I got to go see her and everything, it just wasn't what I expected.

message 29: by Mary Grace (new)

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 132 comments OMG my dream is to see ThePianoGuys and meet them!! Lucky!! I love them all! Which songs did they perform?

I'm sending them a letter, thanking them for inspiring me so much! Hope they write back! :P

Rachael | 26 comments They performed Beethoven's 5 secrets, What makes you beautiful, Story of my Life, Code name Vivaldi, Kung Fu Piano, and I can't remember what else but it was awesome. I hope they do reply to you!

message 31: by Mary Grace (new)

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 132 comments I LOVE Beethoven's 5 Secrets, Code Name Vivaldi, and Kung Fu Piano!!!!!! I don't like One Direction, but ThePianoGuys covers were good. I love when all 5 (or just 4) of them pluck the piano strings and beat on it and play it normally and everything, like in Ants Marching/Ode to Joy and What Males You Beautiful!!

message 32: by Mary Grace (new)

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 132 comments @Gloria Sun my sister just got The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales for her birthday a couple days ago!! She's gonna read The Silmarillion first, and give it to me when I finish Children of Hurin!!! She likes it a lot.

message 33: by Glorious (new)

Glorious (sunrequiem) | 17 comments That's amazing news! I wish I owned those books, and I hope to read Unfinished Tales eventually, and soon! Enjoy :D

message 34: by Mary Grace (new)

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 132 comments Thanks!! Have you read Children of Hurin?

It has 3 spoiler chapter names!!! All three of them are "The death of ____" and I was looking at the index like -_- come on, Tolkien !

message 35: by Glorious (new)

Glorious (sunrequiem) | 17 comments I have read Children of Hurin, back in January actually. But I first experienced it in The Silmarillion. Really tragic. His pride is his downfall. Haha, it's true, Tolkien is quite straightforward when presenting these "historical accounts". He doesn't really beat around the bush.

message 36: by Mary Grace (new)

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 132 comments Oh yes, I heard that it's in The Silmarillion. And Tolkien originally wasn't for naming the third LOTR book The Return of the King, but I think his public made him, or wanted him to, or I don't know. But he said it spoiled the ending too much.

Didn't Christopher Tolkien write most of what was in those books and not J. R. R. Tolkien? I heard they were terrible.

Jingizu | 9 comments Rachael wrote: Didn't Christopher Tolkien write most of what was in those books and not J. R. R. Tolkien? I heard they were terrible. "

No, Christopher Tolkien only edited the manuscripts to form a cohesive story, he didn't write any of it. The story was in draft form as written by Tolkien. He did the same with The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales and all the other History of Middle-Earth books. He left all his notes and letters and manuscripts to Christopher so that he could tidy it up and release/publish it. JRR wrote many letters regarding the story of Middle-Earth to various colleagues and friends, but most of all to his son Christopher.

Definitely not terrible! Loved the story in The Silmarillion and the longer version in the book. Very tragic, and yes, it was Turin's pride that destroyed him in the end. Very similar to the hubris of the old Greek myths.

As to the original question, I read Lord of the Rings for the first time 24 years ago as a teenager. My first adult fantasy. I must admit I read it after I saw the cartoon version of Ralph Bakshi and wanted to know how the story finished. After the first chapter I was completely hooked and became an obsessed fan of Tolkien and Middle-Earth.

Oh, thanks for clearing that up. :) I'm also glad to hear that they are not terrible! I'll really have to read them myself one of these days to form my own opinion. :)

LOTR is the best trilogy, hands down.

message 46: by Mary Grace (new)

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 132 comments I'm 13 right now. I only just became a Tolkienite last year. You can read my first post up there to see how i got into it, but i saw the first two movies first for LOTR. And I saw all the Hobbit movies first too.

message 47: by Breanna (new)

Breanna | 3 comments Besides seeing clips every once in a while long before reading any, I read the hobbit first. Then after I watched all the movies, I listened to all the audiobooks. A part of me wishes I would have read the silmarillion first to have known the background details beforehand, but I often switch from re-reading and re-watching.
