In disgrace with her deceased husband’s family—again!—lovely young widow Lady Fieldhurst finds herself exiled to Scotland with the new Lord Fieldhurst’s three young sons in tow. On impulse, she and the boys decide not to go to the family’s Scottish estate as arranged, but to a quaint inn on the coast, where they can enjoy a seaside holiday under an assumed name, far away from the scandal that continues to dog the family.
But trouble soon finds them when the boys discover an unconscious woman on the beach. Sending to a nearby manor for help, Lady Fieldhurst learns the woman bears a striking resemblance to the daughter of the house, Elspeth Kirkbride, who quarreled with her father fifteen years earlier and walked into the sea, never to be seen again. The woman claims to have no memory of who she is or where she has come from. Angus Kirkbride is elated at his daughter’s return, but his nephews Gavin and Duncan, who are now the old man’s heirs, have doubts about the prodigal and urge their Uncle Angus to send to London for a Bow Street Runner to investigate—which presents a dilemma for Lady Fieldhurst, as she has chosen to call herself Mrs. Pickett, borrowing the name of the handsome young Runner who saved her from the gallows after her husband’s death.
Meanwhile John Pickett, hopelessly pining for Lady Fieldhurst, has determined to put her out of his heart by marrying another—Covent Garden strumpet Lucy Higgins. Appalled by his decision, magistrate Mr. Colquhoun packs Pickett off to Scotland before he can do anything rash. Here Pickett will investigate a fifteen-year-old missing persons case while the magistrate enjoys a fishing holiday.
When Pickett arrives, he is shocked (though not at all displeased) to discover that he has acquired a “wife” in the person of Lady Fieldhurst—and that it was she and her young nephews who discovered the woman he’s been hired to investigate. But when Angus Kirkbride dies only hours after announcing his intention of changing his will in his daughter’s favor, Mr. and Mrs. Pickett must join forces to discover the truth about a family reunion suddenly turned deadly.
