Into the Darkest Corner
question
Should I read this book?

I'm generally quite happy with disturbing books, I loved "We need to talk about Kevin", "Room" and "Gone girl", but wondered if this one is too much, some of the reviews claimed extreme violence, sexual torture etc.
How graphic is it? Opinions much appreciated, thanks :)

If you enjoy good psychological thrillers, I recommend this highly. It is disturbing, chilling, and not for the feint of heart. If, however, you enjoyed "Gone Girl", I don't think this will be too much for you. Darkest Corner is well written, tells the story of what abuse did to Cathy, and the battle back to some semblance of normalcy.
Interesting, chilling, yes. The whole OCD thing was fascinating. Not as violent as The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I didn't think it was particularly well written, but it certainly entertained.
i think you should. if you liked Gone Girl then you'll like this. it is disturbing but it's not worse then the other books you mentioned.
I absolutely loved this book. Kept you guessing from the off. We have a staff book club where I work and this was included. It was voted the best read. There is some violence and mental abuse but it isn't over played and added to the plot. Have gone on to read her other books and they are just as good.
No, I didn't think it was extreme- I've read far worse. But it is a great book that will creep you out. One of the best lines is when she asks the guy she's dating if he's a good guy or a bad guy (in relation to the kind of work he does because he doesn't tell her what he does) and his response is, "It depends if you are a good girl or a bad girl." Which, at the point of the story it is, seems kind of standard, but when you look at it later on, CREEPY.
I just finished it a few days ago and reviewed it. I don't think it would be too much for anyone who likes psychological thrillers, and, as I said in my review, it's a "smart" thriller. I really felt as if Haynes did her research on this one.
If anyone would be bothered by anything, I think it would be the sexual content. I didn't think it was too much and felt that the sex and violence were essential to the story and not at all gratuitous. But one reader I talked to after I posted my review said that she just couldn't get into the book because the characters were "so promiscuous" and she felt that Haynes "overplayed that," that the sexual aspect of things was clear and that some of the sexual scenes and references were extraneous. She said that a number of women in her book club agreed and that the men in the group were uncomfortable discussing it in "mixed company."
Didn't feel that way myself, but I thought I'd throw this out there since it came from someone who usually loves psychological thrillers. I myself would recommend it and may read more of her books.

This book will seriously disturb you if you've been psychologically abused in the past. I don't get squeamish about descriptions of psychical violence, but this book is disturbing on a much deeper level than that.
That being said, it's one of my favorite books and definitely worth reading.

If you like psychological or crime thrillers, I would definitely recommend this book. It is very well written and does not disappoint. However, I thought that Gone Girl was somewhat of a disappointment.
Great book, it was very intense. I was finding myself getting freaked out by noises etc, that never happens for me. Its also a good book for explaining how hard anxiety and mental health can really transform your personality. I thought it was great and quite scary..
I am obviously in the minority here, but I absolutely hated it! Very boring. I felt like I kept reading and reading and NOTHING happened. It was way too drawn out...
I liked Revenge of the Tide much better & really admired Genevieve's devotion to her boat & her skill & courage as a dancer. Found Into the Darkest Corner really grabbed me but Cathy's ladette lifestyle annoyed me and I got awfully tired of her allowing herself to be used as a doormat. Of course my idea of how to deal with an abusive partner is Miranda Lambert's Gunpowder & Lead! Cathy needed to move to Texas!
I don't think there is anything in this book too extreme or disturbing. I enjoyed it very much and I think everyone here supports that opinion.
I would definitely recommend this book, as it is a really great read...

I think you would really get something out of it. Every woman should read it because it defines the type of controlling male that can lead to serious and even dangerous outcomes. I think most women are not aware that charming men can be so dangerous. This novel gives us a really good incite into what to look for in a new acquaintance. Don't be fooled by charm & good looks. There are indicators - trust your instincts. This novel felt real and helps us understand the fear and helplessness of abused women.
The scary part of this novel is that the author manages to create such fear in the reader (like the scene in the bath in the movie Psycho) where you keep expecting the worst and the story keeps this feeling heightening. It was cleverly written.

I recommend Into The Darkest Corner. It is very intense and extremely well written. I listened to this book on Audible (and couldn't stop listening) a few months ago and continue to find it a haunting and compelling read.
The portrayal of OCD and how it impacts on daily life was accurate and the author had obviously researched the subject. I thought this was a far
better book than " Gone Girl".
better book than " Gone Girl".
I agree with many said here! I thought it was going to be gruesome based on some reviews. As someone with works with victims, I found the book believable and on target to that kind of crime-sex and domestic violence!
It's all about your imagination.....:)
This one had me jumping at shadows.

I thought this was an amazing book. I was very anxious at times, yet could not put the book down! Enjoy :)
Definitely one to read - more along the lines of Before I Go To Sleep .. and no, not a gore fest ... although gripping and disturbing

No, if you've actually been through family violence, then this book is gratuitous and a bit insulting really.
i loved it, one of the best books ive ever read, chilling, compelling, couldnt put it down.
I gave this book the whole rack of stars. It was compelling and well-crafted. I love thrillers. I love 'disturbing'. I didn't feel that this veered into the territory 'uncomfortable reading' at all, but perhaps that's because of my reading taste - which is not dissimilar to yours, Andrea! I have recommended it far and wide...
Yes! I just read it and I loved it. If you were fine with some of the other dark novels, you'll be fine with this one.
Andrea, if you haven't already started it, then do. Judging by the type of books you like, you'll love it.
I thought this was a really good book. It doesn't shy away from the difficult issues but I don't think it should do - otherwise you wouldn't really feel what Cathy went through.

This book IS disturbing. Sadly not too far from the reality some live with and continue to live with. If it serves to educate people about this kind of abuse, if it opens a conversation about any of the behaviours and the dynamics in this kind of relationship it will be worthwhile. I would recommend it as a psychological thriller to those who have not experienced this kind of abuse. I think the book has a positive message but from my experience I'd say this kind of abuse takes your life so far off course, who you were effectively dies when you begin a relationship with this kind of person. There is no recovery of the person you were, you cannot go on from where you left off. You must forget what might have been and know it never will be.
Great book which has been passed around the office and loved by everyone who read it. Have just finished her third book Human Remains, which is on a par to this
I think everyone should read this book. If I was really challenged I think I would have said that abused women had an element of being a victim or slightly weak; just leave him. Not now! The way a strong, confident person can be lured into being abused was such an insight.
I really enjoyed this book, its very well written and the story of abuse is handled very sensitively, you wont be disappointed...
Brilliant book, I found it chilling rather than disturbing. The author portrays cathys anxiety brilliantly which conveys to the reader and grabs your imagination. Would recommend x
Personally I didn't find it as disturbing as what some of the reviews said. Don't get me wrong!!, I had major issues as to what happened I just thought it would be worse based on the reviews!! I have to agree with Vince's comment too!
