The Fault in Our Stars by John Green The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Summary (from Penguin)

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Reading Schedule is as follows:

Week 1: Chapter 1 – 6
Week 2: Chapter 7 – 12
Week 3: Chapter 13 - 18
Week 4: Chapter 19 - 25

Hey, Susan! It's absolutely okay. The schedule is really more of a loose guideline for the discussion, but we should all read at our own pace. Please feel free to share your first impressions or your thoughts as you read :)

Hayley (applesticker) I read this when it came out about 12months ago, and absolutely loved it! :) I hope everyone reading along this month enjoys it as much as I did. Small tip: have some tissues handy!

Hi Hayley! I'm loving it so far... Hope you'll join us and add your perspective to the discussion.

Emily Like Hayley, I just wanted to add that I loved this book when I read it - definitely one of the best books I read last year, if not the best. Hope everyone enjoys it!

(And yes, I recommend tissues and, if at all possible, not reading this one in public...)

TinaMarie (sloan0713) I read this book in March and I absolutely loved it. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did and I am looking forward to discussions as people finish it :o)

Hi TinaMarie, this is my introduction to John Green, and so far I'm in love with his writing style - poignant and funny.

Looking forward to discussing the book with you :)

Hi Mariam,

I hope you enjoy it, it does take an emotional stab at the reader and for the first time, in a long time, I was emotionally invested in this book. The characters are witty and lovable. It does end up punching you right in the heart but it was so worth it. This book definitely made it to my favorites list. This too is my first John Green book, I added Looking for Alaska which I am hoping to read this month :o)

As far as John Green goes, this is my favorite out of all of his, but I enjoyed all of his books (except for Paper Towns, which I didn't love, but I know other people who do). Second favorite after this one is definitely Looking for Alaska, which was another great read.

Hi Kate!
I have Looking for Alaska on my TR list and I am hoping to get to it this month. I really got invested in this book. I'm not usually one to attach myself to the characters but I definitely let my guard down with this one. I appreciate any suggestions for more great books to read :o)

So, here I am absolutely in love with the characters, yet from everything everyone is saying, it seems impossible to read it without a deep sense of foreboding. I’m guessing whatever happens at the end is not going to be a happily ever after, and so I am reading it with so much love and an equal amount of dread.

Melody | 252 comments Thank you for whoever suggested this book. I listened to the audible version - and absolutely loved it. The narrator brought Hazel to life and I became very attached to the characters. I don't typically read YA -but this is more than that.

Rania Kalogirou (rania1794) | 7 comments Great book recomendation. I finished it in a matter of hours and cried like a baby all the way through.

Hayley (applesticker) Kate wrote: "(And yes, I recommend tissues and, if at all possible, not reading this one in public...) "

Yes, I wish I had had that second piece of advice - I tried to read it on the bus one day, only make it about three pages through before I started tearing up, and then I almost missed my stop!

I was also my first John Green, though I had heard a LOT about him. I read Paper Towns afterwards and loved it too (although, Kate, I've heard more people not like that one than any of his other works). Looking for Alaska is on my tbr too! :)

Mariam (madamepresidente) | 61 comments Hello!

I wanted to ask what everyone thinks of Augustus' "metaphorical cigarette." Does it make sense to you?

Rania Kalogirou (rania1794) | 7 comments Hey Mariam,
I was thinking about Augustus "cigarette" the other day too, and honesty, it seems a little bit forced and too much. Especially when he says that he puts it back in the packet afterwards..(I am thinking wet filters put back in the packet to be used later again...Hmmm)It also ruined the whole, supposedly at least, "bad boy" image of Augustus. It is a pretty stupid image of him going around with an unlit cigarette and the whole philosophy behind it is even more silly and childish.
"He puts the killing thing in his mouth but doesn't give it the power to kill him"
Pfff

Melody | 252 comments Agree it was a bit forced. But then on the other hand, I could imagine some teenagers trying to come across as more intelligent than they really are. (Not sure if I am using the right words here.)

Rania Kalogirou (rania1794) | 7 comments Hey Melody, I understand what you are saying and I can definetely see how a teenager is liable to such kinda of behaviour. But in the end John Green could have written without that part...

Mariam (madamepresidente) | 61 comments Melody wrote: "Agree it was a bit forced. But then on the other ..."

Rania wrote: "... John Green could have written without that part..."

I absolutely agree with you both. I think he tries to be "profound" but ends up not making much sense.
