Derek Smith | 13 comments In my author's profile I have been assigned about 30 books by other Derek Smiths. This is obviously a common name, but I don't want to claim books that are not mine. So how do I get them off my Author profile, just leaving my own books?

I'd be grateful for your assistance as I am very new to this site.

Empress (the_empress) I think you should state which ones are your books, so the librarians can separate the books properly.

message 3: by Derek (new)

Derek Smith | 13 comments Thank you for your comment, Ellie, but I think it will be easier to say which of the books are mine as there are only three - and the other 45 books are authored by other Derek Smiths (I should think at least 4 or 5 different authors). My three books in the list are:

Frances Fairweather Demon Striker!
La Motie d'un velo
(this is the French edition of the English 'Half a Bike' which is now out of print)
Hard Cash

These are three of my children's books of which there are seven more.

I have just published a couple of e-books but their ISBNs won't have come through yet, and another will be published this month - but I will wait on these until they are official. All are for grown-ups.

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Derek, since there are so many other Derek Smiths writing books, I'm going to put in a request to have you moved to a secondary profile. Otherwise there would be a constant stream of new books from other Derek Smiths being added to your profile.

message 5: by Derek (new)

Derek Smith | 13 comments Why are so many Derek Smith's writing books? Someone should write a book about it. (not me) What effect does a secondary profile have? Can I be found or will I be lost as anyone looking gives up when all that shows up for Derek Smith is all the others, and not me?

message 6: by Cait (last edited Mar 31, 2013 12:20PM) (new)

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments A secondary profile means, on a technical level, that you'll have two spaces between your first and last names -- Derek^^Smith, where ^ is a space. This looks the same when someone's looking at the website, but lets us distinguish otherwise identical names. When you add new books or new editions of existing books, you'll need to be careful that they're created with the extra space or they'll show up on the generic profile. (If they do, just drop a note here and someone will move them right over.)

As far as searching goes, anyone searching for "Derek Smith" will see you in the list of results. The only place your books wouldn't show up is if someone is browsing the list of books assigned to the generic Derek Smith profile, but all of your books (and only your books) will show up when someone browses the new Derek Smith profile which will belong just to you.

(The same thing would happen in reverse if we'd moved the other books off of your profile and made them into Derek^^Smith while you kept the primary Derek^Smith profile, except that then you'd have to be requesting to have books moved in the other direction.)

(We do this a fair amount for authors with common names. I've seen it go as high as requiring eleven spaces between first and last names to get each author profile representing an individual author. (Yes, I've made it go to 11.) I don't think that'll be required here, though!)

I moved you over to the 2space profile. What I am unable to do is move your blog post. However, if you wish to copy it over to the profile with your books (now your profile), any librarian can delete the blog post off the not-you-anymore profile if you post back here to let us know.

message 9: by Derek (new)

Derek Smith | 13 comments Thank you, Librarians. Forget the blog for now. I'll begin again tomorrow on the new profile. You have found most of my books. You obviously sorted me out somehow from the other Derek Smiths. Clever of you. Two books though are omitted. Could you please add them. They are:

'Fast Food' ISBN: 978-0-9536283-8-4
'Baker's Boy' ISBN: 978-0-9536283-6-0

I'm glad I don't have to put eleven spaces between my names. That would be so easy to get wrong. It's hard counting spaces, you can't see them. Someone else's problem though, but I have been trying to think of what name would be so common. John Smith or Mary Brown? Or am I being too Anglo-centric?

Thanks again.
Derek

Neither appear to be in the GR database. See these instructions for the rest of the information needed to add them: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...

Ken Cohen (kencohen) | 2 comments Hello Librarians! I am having a similar problem to Derek - there is another Ken Cohen with a vast library. I only have the first and second edition of my book (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17...), as well as the Spanish version. How can I disambiguate between myself and the other Ken Cohen?

I've also requested elsewhere for my pen name, Rudi Spaniola (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/84...) to be combined with my actual name so that I can combine the first and second editions of my book.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments Ken,

I moved the other Ken Cohen's books and got the other editions of your book combined - they are still under Rudi Spaniola, since that is the name on the book, but they are all connected now.

I'm not so bothered about those books, as they are children's books so not of great interest on Goodreads, but another book of mine which is for a grown up readership has not shown up. It is:

Hell's Chimney
ISBN: 9780953628377
author: Derek Smith
published by Earlham Books, 2010

I'd be grateful if you could check it out and add it to my books if you find it.

Derek

Deon (deonva) | 3718 comments Derek,
i have moved your book. When adding books you are Derek-2spaces-Smith. If you don't put in 2 spaces it will not show up on your profile.

Actually, we like the catalog to be as complete as possible. There are many children's books listed here, and a lot of people review them.
