Yes, sometimes Buttercup did act like a bitch. And more than often, it was because of her stupidity. But I don't think the author necessarily wanted us to like Buttercup. She acted like the classic naive and lovesick puppy almost all fairy tales have. I think Goldman was making fun of these stereotypical characters or "princesses" by making Buttercup have a similar personality.





Let's talk about the movie when Westley was being attacked. She picked up a large stick and hit the giant rat. In the book, SHE. JUST. WATCHED!!!!

I was annoyed.
But I think even she realizes she was a bitch.
I know she genuinely loves Westley but god she was a coward.
I really think that she didn't really have brains enough to even know what love is, let alone love Westley.
While reading, I really, really was wishing for a scene where someone would push her off the Cliffs
