Lynne Stringer She became a princess only when Humperdinck decided to marry her. Before that, she was a common farm girl.

Thank you.I agree. Also i think Buttercup's slight lack of intelligence makes Westley's protectiveness even more adorable, don't you agree?

Audrey Collins Buttercup knew that if she stayed with Westley, he would be killed and she would be taken off to marry the Prince. If she goes willingly with the Prince and tells hims not to bring harm to Westley, at least he will live. She was scared and she had just gone through a lot more than anyone should ever go through in their life and she didn't have much time, so I agree she could have chosen her words more wisely, but would you have?

Theres To the original discussion:

Yes, sometimes Buttercup did act like a bitch. And more than often, it was because of her stupidity. But I don't think the author necessarily wanted us to like Buttercup. She acted like the classic naive and lovesick puppy almost all fairy tales have. I think Goldman was making fun of these stereotypical characters or "princesses" by making Buttercup have a similar personality.

Lynne Stringer I'm just trying to think of other naive, lovesick puppies in fairy tales. Can you name some? I can't think of any that were as stupid as Buttercup. Underdeveloped character-wise, yes, but that's not unusual for characters in a fairy tale.

Hi I think most people would chose life.

Bobbie I hated her in the book AND the movie.

Bmwt Online I read a comparison of the core characters with those in Star Wars. This seems apt - the princess ends up with the rogue. We care and maybe judge these two characters but there's more to it. To me the story is about a disparate group that has banded together for a cause. How they change along their journey is more to the point than looking for something fairytale - like in any of the characters.

Lynne Stringer I wouldn't call Westley a rogue. That sounds more like Inigo to me than Westley. He's more the thinker who knows how to fight.

lenaa books I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE, its not like I hate her its just that SHE REALLY DOES JUST ABOUT NOTHING BUT SIT THERE AND LETS WESLEY SAVE HER LIFE OVER AND OVER AGIAN, and in the beginning she treats Wesley like shit

Ally C Or what about how helpless she was when Westley was being attacked by the RUS! She legit just stood there and watched the love of her life be eaten alive! I mean, this is a great book, but this is one of the few where I say the movie was better.

Let's talk about the movie when Westley was being attacked. She picked up a large stick and hit the giant rat. In the book, SHE. JUST. WATCHED!!!!

I was annoyed.
But I think even she realizes she was a bitch.
I know she genuinely loves Westley but god she was a coward.

I really think that she didn't really have brains enough to even know what love is, let alone love Westley.
While reading, I really, really was wishing for a scene where someone would push her off the Cliffs
