Sami I wanted a place to discuss books we can read for the team challenge. This might be suitable as it is the highest scoring book I can see for the first challenge. (Setting, Year, cover, plot = 16 points)

message 2: by Vicki (new)

Vicki So is the idea that we all four read this book?

message 3: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami Oh not at all :D The idea was just to have a thread away from the group so we can discuss what books we might read freely. Do you think it's a bit much?

Anyway Vicki I saw your book with 17 points wow, are you planning to read that one?

message 4: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie Read whatever you'd like Vicki! This will just be our secret hiding place! :D

message 5: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami Ive found a book The Gathering Storm (Wheel of Time, #12; A Memory of Light, #1) by Robert Jordan (cover, setting, genre, name) that I thought was 14pts but apparently the first character actually fulfills his dream of becoming a farmer pretty early on, so it's worth 17pts with plot! :D 800 pages but it looks really interesting so..

Does anyone know if we're allowed to start today?

message 6: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie Great find, Sami!! Quite long for me, though.

We are allowed to start tomorrow, the 1st of April :D

message 7: by Trisha (new)

Trisha oh my gosh, I love the secret thread!! I was wondering this too!!! how to keep our discussion from everyone else! yay!!! :D

So is it official? am I on the team? lol

message 8: by Trisha (new)

Trisha oh, and are you guys okay with my book. I know it's only 14 points... but I plan to finish it in one day (tomorrow) to help with the "completed on a certain day" bonus points....

message 9: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie I believe it is pretty official! LOL
We still haven't heard from Ravenclaw.

I'm okay with your book! :D Whatever you want.

I was thinking about reading the same one, it looks so good! I am going to look around a bit more today though. I'll let you guys know in a bit what my choice is. :D

message 10: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami :D "only" 14 points! 14 is pretty high! And I think it's more important that you enjoy the book you're reading,
(Luckily I love medieval fantasy books so my one's pretty good)

message 11: by Janna (last edited Mar 31, 2013 12:48PM) (new)

Janna Marie Okay guys, I was thinking either

Paper Towns by John Green
Setting - 2009 [6 pts]
Names - John [5 pts]
Genre - Adventure [1 pt]
Plot - (at some point) Road Trip [3 pts]
Total: 15 pts

OR

Trisha's 14 pt pick

I'll keep looking, though! :D

message 12: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami They both look good, and I heard Paper Towns is awesome :D

Later, I'll put down the other books I found in my search in the small chance there's one in there that one of you like

message 13: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie I've heard some great things about Paper Towns. :D

You kept some other ones to share? That'd be awesome, Sami!

message 14: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I thought setting was only worth six points not nine.

message 15: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I forgot about extra points for reading the book in one day. Is it on a specific day or any book we read on any particular day if we get it fnished in one day or what?

message 16: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami I have guests in my house now, when they leave I'll dig them up :) yup I was keeping them in case I get bored of the Gathering Storm

message 17: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie Good catch, Vicki! I had the total right, just hit the wrong number on my keyboard for the setting. It's fixed now, thank you!!

For the extra points its an all or nothing. We all have to finish within a certain number of days. Here is the scoring:

Day 1 or 2 = 3pt
Day 3 or 4 = 2pt
Day 5 or 6 = 1pt
Day 7 = no extra points

So, if we want the 3 extra points we all have to finish our books within the first two days, so the 3rd of April. I hope that helps!

message 18: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie Sweet! You're awesome, Sami :D

message 19: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami Thanks :D Bear in mind the reason I didn't go for most is cause they're not my type, so they might not be urs either

message 20: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami Give Up the Ghost by Megan Crewe - Year (6) and 'up' in title (4) points = 10 Points

Lowboy by John Wray by John Wray - Name - John (5), Year (6) and boy on cover (2) = 13 points

The Associate by John Grisham by John Grisham - Name (5), Year (6) and Genre (Adventure/Crime) (1) = 12 points

My Father's Tears and Other Stories by John Updike - Name (John), Year (6) and Plot (3) (dream fulfilled) - 14 points

Last Night in Twisted River by John Irving - Name (5), Plot (small road trip)(3), Year (6), Cover (boy)(2) - 16 points

Another reason I didn't choose them is because I could poke holes in some of them (e.g the boy not being very 'little' or the road trip not being a huge part of the plot) anyway there they are :) I don't expect anyone else to like something I didn't but just in case...

message 26: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie Woohoo! We've got Trisha!! Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. *doing a silly dance*

Vicki Janna wrote: "Okay, so are we shooting for two days ladies? Do you need more time?"

Two what? LOL

message 28: by Vicki (last edited Mar 31, 2013 10:58PM) (new)

Vicki Okay, I'm going to suck it up and read this one for SEVENTEEN POINTS!! K Blows Top A Cold War Comic Interlude Starring Nikita Khrushchev, America's Most Unlikely Tourist by Peter Carlson

PRAY that it isn't too bad for me to read! I am doing this one for "the cause." LOL

Would everyone mind posting what you've decided to read for sure? Please. :o)

message 29: by Trisha (new)

Trisha Yes I'm going to read it before end of day Tuesday
I plan to read You Are Here by Jennifer E. Smith

for 14 points. :)

message 30: by Trisha (new)

Trisha Vicki wrote: "Janna wrote: "Okay, so are we shooting for two days ladies? Do you need more time?"

Two what? LOL"

You can do it Vicki!!! I believe in you!! that way we can get 2 extra bonus points!

message 31: by Trisha (new)

Trisha oh, and I made a list of the bonus words too!

and am using it as a book mark!!

Cliff
mailbox
balloon
photo/photograph
bird

:D hopefully we can find some of those too!! LOL

message 32: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie Vicki, I am going with:

Paper Towns by John Green
Setting - 2009 [6 pts]
Names - John [5 pts]
Genre - Adventure [1 pt]
Plot - (at some point) Road Trip [3 pts]
Total: 15 pts

I hope this helps! :D

You can do it!! You kick the butts little paper booty! If you don't make it in 2 days, we won't be mad. Just the idea of 3 extra points is exciting!

Trisha, thank you for posting the bonus words! I hope I get a few :D At least 3 would be nice, so I can catch up to Vicki! LOL

message 33: by Sami (last edited Apr 01, 2013 09:50AM) (new) - added it

Sami Wow Vicki, talk about 'taking one for the team' thank you :D

I'm going to read
The Gathering Storm (Wheel of Time, #12; A Memory of Light, #1) by Robert Jordan
Setting - 2009 (6pts)
Name - Jordan (5 pts)
Genre - Adventure (1 pt)
Plot - Fulfilling a dream (3 pts)
Cover - A house (2pts)
Total: 17 pts

Unfortunately it's medieval so there's no way I'll get 'photograph' or 'mailbox' bonus points

It's 800 pages so I definitely won't be able to do it one day, I'll try for two though!

Good luck everyone :D

message 34: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie Good luck, Sami! :D

Jeremy Poole I'm lost, do you actually read these books. I read the last night at twisted River. A bit long winded and boring at times. But It's still with me.Well worth the trudge.

message 36: by Vicki (last edited Apr 01, 2013 04:47PM) (new)

Vicki Thank you girls for your words of encouragement! I have been reading my book all day since a little after midnight! I can't believe I am actually enjoying reading the book, it is interesting. LOL

I thought I posted this before so maybe I posted it elsewhere in error because I was on my phone, but I have found three of the extra words so far!
How do we prove we have the words? I assume that when we post our book we put the page number where the word is found and the sentence it is in.

Also thank you for posting the books that you plan to read. It might save some time if any of those books work for anyone else.

I just love our secret little thread!! Lol

message 37: by Vicki (new)

Vicki YAY!!! I just found a 4th word, so that's 4 extra points for Team Amazing!!

Did we all agree on that name? Lol

message 38: by Trisha (new)

Trisha Vicki wrote: "Thank you girls for your words of encouragement! I have been reading my book all day since a little after midnight!..."

OMG! Congrats Vicki on finishing on day 1!! WOOHOO! I'm about 1/2 way on mine, so I'll be done after I get a few things IRL done (LOL)

Yes, for the extra words. I think we just post the page number (or %) and partial sentece it's in.

I've only found 1 so far, so fingers crossed I'll find the rest before the end!

I'm crossing them! Should I go ahead and post my book for the challenge? If so, do I post it under Team Two thread?

Sami Jeremy wrote: "I'm lost, do you actually read these books. I read the last night at twisted River. A bit long winded and boring at times. But It's still with me.Well worth the trudge."
I'm sorry Jeremy! I've sent you a PM...

message 41: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami Vicki wrote: "I'm crossing them! Should I go ahead and post my book for the challenge? If so, do I post it under Team Two thread? ."

:D Yes you definitely ought to! Wow congrats on all the points! Have you finished it already??! Whoa that was fast!

And I love the name 'Team Amazing' :D

message 42: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Yes, I read all freaking day! Lol I began right after midnight. So my book is 17 points, plus 4 bonus words = 21, and if everyone gets their book done by tomorrow night I'll get another 3 points for a total of 24.

Kathy will also have 24 if her group members get their books read in 2 days. I think she's in Team Five.

message 43: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami Wait, we ALL have to have read our books by tomorrow night for the points bonus? Omg I didn't know that! I might've chosen a shorter book. Oh well, next week then!

Wow I wonder what book Kathy chose.

message 44: by Sami (new) - added it

Sami Vicki what time is it where you are? Have you slept yet?! If not, you should rest!! :D *hands over pillow and virtual hot chocolate*

message 45: by Trisha (new)

Trisha You can do it Sami!!! We have until end of day Tuesday to finish the book and we get three points!!

We can do it! :D

message 46: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Ha ha, Sami! It is 10:00 PM. I'm in central California. I slept from 3-8 so I'm good. I rarely go to bed before 12:30 because my husband gets home at 11:45. I just had to get my book done today. Tomorrow I'll be starting Romeo and Juliet with my freshmen, but my heart is on Juliet Immortal. Lol

message 47: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie Done! Actually, I finished like.. 8 hours ago.. but I had to go straight to sleep since I have to work today! LOL

Paper Towns by John Green
Setting - 2009 [6 pts]
Names - John [5 pts]
Genre - Adventure [1 pt]
Plot - Road Trip [3 pts]
Words - Bird (P120); Balloon (P91); Photograph (P94) [3 pts]
Total: 18 pts

You are a champ, Vicki! BTW, 21 is pretty awesome!

Sami, we believe in you! Like I said before, if you don't finish right away it's okay! :D I'd split the book with you if I could!!! LOL

message 48: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Janna wrote: "Done! Actually, I finished like.. 8 hours ago.. but I had to go straight to sleep since I have to work today! LOL

YAY! You are finished, too! That's a good score for you as well. Sure glad we both found a few of the words. :o)

message 49: by Janna (new)

Janna Marie Me too! I was worried I wouldn't find any words! Woohoo! Everyone is doing awesome so far! By the way, I took a peek at Kathy's score. She only has 19 points, without the 3 points for finishing early. Her whole team has to finish by the 3rd to get the points. I don't mean to bash them or anything... BUT her team leader just jumped in on the competition, so she is just starting this week. Good for us! LOL

message 50: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Oh, yay! I saw 21 points and got nervous! Lol

We have only 2 days to earn 3 points, so we'd all need to be done Tuesday night, right? By midnight I think. I know Trisha will finish, so we all need to cheer on Sami. She chose a hefty book, but she can do it! I'm feeling confident! :)

Go Sami and Trisha!

GO Team Amazing!
