Strayed TOO far from original plot?

I thought it was okay for what it was. It basically just extends over to the next generation with Chris and Cathy being the only originals basically. Of course Bart and Jory were brought in from the previous If There be Thorns. The story was not like the originals because so many of the original characters area all dead here. And bringing Joel back was unnecessary but I guess they needed a new villain. However he was no Malcolm, or Olivia or even Corrine or John Amos. This was the weakest of all the books but I guess V.C Andrews wanted to end the story in some way as Chris and Cathy die here. The story is ok but could have ended with Garden of Shadows.
