I have never seen the TV series, and don't think I want to check it out until I have read the..."
The story is not going to be boring.

Great idea, Meg. I hope it works for your students! :o)

Irene, you are co-leading the discussion yes?"
Yes, but I have never co-facilitated before, and only facilitated one discussion here, so I am not sure how exactly to go about it.

@Jayme (the ghost reader):- It's not always that the story becomes boring.. i just tend to leave a book in the middle and move on to another book (whichever i'm excited about) finish it and come back to this one.

Oh, and I'm liking it so far. I'm glad this group read came along and that I decided to try despite the negative I'd read. I think I might end up liking this a lot... :)

I am getting more tempted with the 8 week battery life and the end of chapter time feature.

I am reading this on a Kindle, also. Have you heard from any other Kindle readers?

Anna, has anyone assisted you with page numbers vs. chapters? I am also planning to read the book on my Kindle.

Not really... The problem is that there are no chapter numbers. I was going to suggest (but haven't gotten around to it) that maybe someone with a book could add like the last sentences of the chapter or the first ones of the next one. Or somehow indicate what part we are discussing. The first weeks have the character's name on it, but I guess it gets harder when they repeat. In any case I'm not buying physical books when I don't have to, so hopefully we find a solution.

Thanks,, Jayme, I mistakenly sent you that email and you are awfully nice to offer assistance! I am going to run by my local library and compare the book to my Kindle edition. Can't wait to get started.

LOL. Yes, let's devise a simple solution. I will follow up with you soon.

Before May 5 read 138 pages up to Sansa (Loc 2612)
May 5 - discuss 138 pages read up to page 250 Eddard (Loc 4702)
May 12 - discuss up to page 250 read up to page 378 (Loc 7108)
May 19 - discuss up to page 378 read up to page 501 (Loc 9414)
May 26 - discuss up to page 501 read up to page 606 (Loc 11416)
June 2 - discuss up to page 606 read up to page 729 (Loc 13722)
June 9 - discuss up to page 729 finish book
June 16 - Discuss whole book

Anna, I just posted the Kindle schedule. I went to a local branch library, and all the copies were on the "Hold" shelf. I looked for a big, fat paperback book. It was the third one I looked at! So, I quickly jotted down the page numbers and then put the book back for the future reader!

Jayme, thanks again! I have posted the Kindle schedule.

Maybe these can be used if we go on to the next books. Then it doesn't matter which version you're reading :)

Anyone on United from Houston to Newark Sunday evening? How funny would that be?

I read all of the available books before I watched the series on DVD, and while the series is done very well, I would recommend reading the books first. That way, you can imagine the characters and geography for yourself first. I noticed that my images of some things differed greatly from the HBO series (such as my vision of Catelyn is very different from the character they cast as Catelyn, Michelle Fairley).
I would like to join the discussion occasionally, and I will be sure to use the link to the chapter summaries so that I don't give away any spoilers.
I will say that this first book, Game of Thrones is probably the best of the series... but that is likely because it is all new and fascinating information about a wonderful new adventure : )
