We decided to use the Greenwich hour for two reasons:
1.Is the "zero" hour. All time zones relate to it
2.Daylight saving time change will only occur on October 27th, so it won't interfere with read-a-thon timings.
Sorry Ladies that I have been MIA for the last couple of weeks :( I have been without internet because I have been in the process of moving from NE back home to TN. I just updated my bookshelf with all the books I have managed to read/listen to. It's amazing how much I have gotten read with everything going on in my life right now but I have had quite a bit of down time and without internet service there's nothing left to do but read LOL. I am sorry to load all these books down on you at one time Claire but I wanted to get them on my shelf before September was over. I am sure I will have a couple more read tomorrow but don't know if I will get to a Wi-Fi connection and get them posted :( So I guess what I just posted on my shelf will be everything I can include in the September challenge...sorry. I hope you all are doing ok and will update again as quickly as I can.
Robin, you're not the only one who's been MIA. I've been gone right along with you. I have been so busy with work that I have a limited amount of time to read. What I've managed to read, I've labeled :) I hope you are all doing good :)

This was a very unexpected move for me as some crazy things took place and it's just all been a great big mess. My internet access has been very limited to when I can get a ride to a wi-fi hot spot LOL. I managed to get my books posted but didn't have enough time to get them labeled :(
Ok..... Sorry for the delayed reply, this last week or so's been absolutely mad! Early starts (I don't like going out in the dark lol!), long drives and revision for my exam this week! Robin, not a problem, I was about to PM to see if you were ok but you beat me to it! I think I've managed to get them all into some spot or other but let me know if there are any others I've missed.
Hope the move went well, September appears to have been a crazy month for lots of us! If you get any more posted in the next 24 hours, I can count them for the challenge, if not, don't worry.
Susan , how's school going? Are you still enjoying it?
Phyllis, don't worry about that, I'll have a proper look at the challenge on Wednesday after my exam but 'reading like a banshee' (which is anything you like to read) will be the most important bit of the challenge :) I've noticed you're almost at your goal, if you want to increase it, let me know, you're more than welcome to :) And let me know if you need a hand changing it as well :)
Cathie.... I've got all of your books (I think) except for the
which I can't place, if you've got any ideas let me know :)Kme_17, your books are tomorrow night's addition to the challenge and then we should, hopefully, have at least the lowest percentage covered :)
We're currently on 58/61 for the first level of the September challenge!! :)
ShoSho, how are you? How's everything going?
Right.... Monster message posted, bed time, up again in 6 1/2 hours!! Sleep well/have a good day everyone :)
So confused about the Halloween Reading Challenges and the posting/scoring :[ If someone can keep it straight and tell us how much we are to read and when we have to post by maybe...(These challenges keep getting more and more complicated)
Morning! I'll finish off the September challenge tonight and let you all know how we did.Cathie, great idea! Thank you :)
Kme_17, thanks, I'll add that in too :)
As for the October challenge. If you want, I'll happily read the 15 books for the second part of the challenge, I've got quite a few that fit on my list of 'to read soon' books that are burning a hole in my kindle! Then everyone else, if they want, can take part in the 'Read like a banshee' bit? How does that sound?
As for working out how much to read, I'll have a look at that Wednesday night/Thursday after my exam and let you know.
And posting, I'll set up a thread but maybe, if you could update every day or two there and then I'll update the Moderators on our progress.
If anybody doesn't want to do this challenge at all, let me know, that's fine as well :)
Claire, isn't the 2nd part of the challenge all about speed and trying to be one of the first 5 teams who post? Wouldn't it be better if there were more of us reading, that way we could finish multiple books at a time, if we all agree to participate? Maybe I read the 2nd challenge wrong?
I don't read any true horror type books, but I do read paranormal, so I could easily help with Theme 8 and 10, as well as any spell it out and possibly Theme 5 and 6 since they are open to interpretation.

Mote to come.
Cathie, you're absolutely right, I missed that line when I was reading through last night! Scrap that idea! I'll go through tomorrow and summarise the tasks so we can get an idea of what we'll pick :)

Hallo! Hope everyone's ok.I'll get to this properly tomorrow afternoon when my course is over but here's a brief overview for the October challenge.
First of all, who wants to take part in the 'read like a banshee' bit? No theme, just an informal page goal... Please let me know what you want to put.
And then... the tasks. We have to read 15 books that fit, 1 for task one through to 5 for task 5. I would suggest we use the spell it outs for the higher numbers, to make things easier and give us longer to read for them but I've not come up with any ideas for words yet!
So... the spell it outs are:
Theme #4: Trick or Treat (a word to do with a trick or treat)
Theme #7: Halloween Party Item word
I think using those for tasks 4 and 5 would be a good idea.
The other themes are:
Theme #1: A classic horror or a modern revamp of a classic such as Dracula or Pride, Prejudice and zombies
Theme #2: Book by a master of horror or fantastic fiction, maybe one for the fans of Neil Gaiman and Stephen King? Or Terry Pratchett
Theme #3: A book that focuses on Celtic/Gaelic traditions or fits the meaning of Samhain
Theme # 5: Books about something that scares you.
Theme #6: Books set in creepy places!
Theme #8: Something with vampires/werewolves/witches etc in
Theme #8: Books with red orange and or black covers or halloween themed covers
Theme #10: Characters have special abilities.
I hope that makes sense and there's plenty there for any that don't like horror (a bit like me!). I have some ideas for what I can read but let me know if you have ideas about which to do :)
I'll post this in the new October thread in the sister group :)
event #1 question - 1st place will go to the team with the highest page read count that met their goal, so any little bit would help? If that's the way it works, I'll set a goal and try to help for that.As for event #2, I agree with the decision to do the spell-it-outs for 4 and 5. Might be a bit easier to fill it.

Susan (susayq) wrote: "I'm in a good mood tonight LOL"That's great :) Any particular reason? Did you get lucky?
ShoSho wrote: "Susan (susayq) wrote: "I'm in a good mood tonight LOL"That's great :) Any particular reason? Did you get lucky?"
Haha, no. Not lucky ;) and I'd have to say for no particular reason. Just that it's almost Friday, I have a legitimate reason to go to the bookstore this weekend and I got approved for my first netgalley book :)

Yaaay !The netgalley by itself is a good reason , what did you get? and did you get "Jagged"?
No, I didn't get Jagged. I had to request and I was denied :( I got Wild Child by Molly O'Keefe and Elizabeth of York by Allison Weir.

Susan and ShoSho, that's great :) If you want to join the event 1 bit, let me know a page goal, I'm still yet to sit down and figure mine out! Last day of my course today and then I'll have some more time! :DI believe that, as long as someone is participating in event 1, the books can be used for event 2 as well, even if you're not specifically signed up for it. So if (for example) Susan was 'only' signed up for event 1 but read a book beginning with the letter W and we were spelling W.I.T.C.H, the book could count for the W (as long as you're happy with that!)
My page goal is 1000 for the RaT portion. I'll check in nightly before I go to bed to post how many pages I read. Should I do that here or in the sister group?
I hate spell it outs, with a deep passions. Not my cup of tea at all. Currently reading the
I may not be a great contributor to this challenge and you probably don't want to include me in it. Don't know how many halloween/spooky/paranormal reads I will do. Right now I'm just into reading whatever takes my fancy; I think I am burnt out from having to fit books I don't really want to read into challenges; I just want to get back to the joy of reading what holds my interest and not worry about having to fit a book into categories. Don't mean to sound like a downer or to let down the team, but I need to get back to the joy of just reading and let go of stress in my life. I've read so many great books but looking back on reading them they are not savored in the way when I take time.
I'm in relaxed mode for the rest of this year :-)
That's absolutely fine Cathie, do you want to just do the reading only one, the same as Susan? The page goal is simply to give you a challenge rather than a target. It's entirely up to you.
I think it looks like we'll be picking non Halloweeny themes! But we can use any books we want for the spell it outs, not just horror.
If it helps the group I'll participate in any way I can, but I can't get my head into trying to figure out what to read to fit what. Can we up our page goal if we read more or is it fixed?
Sorry, I'm being real lazy and not looking anything up; yeah, I'm terrible.
I am reading an ARC sent to me by a new author that is about zombies, so I guess that fits too :-)
I will help out with the October challenge too. We just got back to TN yesterday from our move from NE and I haven't really had time to look at the October challenge yet. I will try to look at it later today and let you know what I will be able to help with :)
Great Robin :-) and cathie, I'm not sure, I'll find out tomorrow but I presume so as the page goal is just for you rather than contributing to the challenge results
I hope that made sense... I passed my blue light driving course today and I'm now heading out to the local booze bus for a few hours first aid cover!
I can now drive ambulances (For St John ambulance, the organization I now work for) using the blue lights and the sirens for emergency calls.
Oct. 4th up-date.Today I finished reading The Rebel's Pledge by Rita Gerlech, 286 pages, 80 pages read today.
I also finished Not By Sight by Kathy Herman. 400 pages, 69 pages read today.
I plan to read 2200 pages during the Read-a-thon.
October 4th update:
- 54 pages (pgs. 189-243)
- 21 pages (pgs. 57-78)
- 35 pages.Total: 110 pages
I'll set my goal at 1500 pages
Morning everyone, I've totally not spent the morning in bed reading....Thanks for the updates, I'll post an overall update and sort the spreadsheet/thread out this afternoon.
I'm over halfway through a book that we can use for the 'your fears' theme which I'm happy to put as task 1 if everyone else is?
