Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Jenny, do you think you would want to participate in the read-a-thon from May 1 -12th? You would need to read at least 300 pages. They do not need to necessarily all be read during those days, but the books must be finished during those days. I see you are reading 3 books right now and there are 2 of them that, if they are finished during that time period, would be enough pages or just the one that has over 400 pages.

You do not need to participate if you don't want to.

ok.turtlecollectorI see what you mean ,since i do a lot of computer work I am not so sure I can do the mark between those dates you just posted ,I did increase the # of books to 10 to my goal,I will try to reach as much as 400 between now and the reach goal date.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I will put you down for 300 pages for right now. If you decide you can't do it or read more than that, we can change it up until May 8th. For the pages read all you need to do is finish the books between May 1 and May 12. You can start now and they can be less than 160 pages. The books less than 160 pgs won't count toward our team total though.

The only recommendation for reaching the team goal sooner may be to read shorter books as long as they are more than 160 pages. I don't think that always works though because sometimes I find the shorter ones boring enough that I end up distracted and reading other books instead and it takes me twice as long to finish the shorter ones.

My advice is: just read at your own pace. This is supposed to be a fun competition. If you try to hurry yourself too much, you might lose some of the enjoyment of getting lost in the world of the book.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments My new plan for the Read-a-Thon -

Definitely read:
Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace World Without End (The Pillars of the Earth, #2) by Ken Follett The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult

As many of these as I can also fit into the 12 days depending on what I am in the mood for:

Perfect Fit (Serendipity, #4) by Carly Phillips Black Coffee (Hercule Poirot #7) by Agatha Christie Did You Miss Me? by Karen Rose Guilt (Alex Delaware, #28) by Jonathan Kellerman Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by Robin LaFevers Silenced by Kristina Ohlsson Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple The Sign of Four (Sherlock Holmes, #2) by Arthur Conan Doyle The Iron Queen (The Iron Fey, #3) by Julie Kagawa Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky, #2) by Veronica Rossi Peril at End House (Hercule Poirot, #8) by Agatha Christie

I'm simply amazed at the amount of reading you get done. That too at an enjoyable pace. I wish I had that kind of obssession/time/no-distractions.

message 311: by Turtlecollector Dennis (last edited Apr 28, 2013 10:50PM) (new)

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I am a fast reader. That being said, I really don't do much in my spare time except read. I prefer to stay at home than go out. I carry a book with me almost everywhere I go in case I have even 5 minutes to read. I have been caught reading while waiting at the drive through window of a fast food restaurant.

I walk to work alot and I even read while I walk.(It is 30 min each way) Several regular patrons who come into my library always tell me "I saw you reading while you were walking on the street. Don't you ever run into anything?" So far I have not run into anything, but I have tripped over my own feet a few times.

The second half of my previous post will not all be read during the Read-a-Thon, probably at the most 3-4 of them since my two 1000 pg books will take up a lot of the time. It is just a list of books I want to read in May that are due back to my library sooner rather than later. After the two big books, I may only be in the mood for the romance or Agatha Christie books which are easier/lighter reads for me.

message 312: by Sanskriti (new)

Sanskriti Nagar | 318 comments Wow. Reading while walking! I couldn't try something like that. Not in my city atleast where the footpaths are either flooded by people or even cars at times. Yes. Cars. That's how bad the traffic congestion is in my city.
But the amount of reading you get done is sure keeping me inspired.

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments TC, I'm going to lower my page goal for RaT to 2000 for now.
I forgot I have some work to finish :(. I'll be listening to audio while working, but I'm not promising I'll finish that book.
Then again, I can change my goal again till 8th :)

So my plan for RaT reading:
Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell The Best Man by Kristan Higgins Hip Check (New York Blades #10) by Deirdre Martin Touch & Geaux (Cut & Run #7) by Abigail Roux One Good Earl Deserves a Lover (The Rules of Scoundrels, #2) by Sarah MacLean
and The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, #3) by J.R.R. Tolkien on audio :D

And if there is still time:
Lover Avenged (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #7) by J.R. Ward Going, Going, Ganache (Cupcake Bakery Mystery, #5) by Jenn McKinlay

I loved Cynthia Voigt's books about Dicey's family when I read them back when I was still in school.

Are you enjoying Defending Jacob by William Landay ? I am planning to read that sometime soon as part of my Goodreads Choice Awards challenge for this group.

Jenny, I received your "request to join" our "sister group" - and have accepted you as a Team Member. Welcome! Sorry for all the confusion.

message 322: by Melissa (ladybug) (last edited Apr 29, 2013 10:00AM) (new)

Melissa (ladybug) | 1048 comments This is the first book of C. Voigt's books that I have read. I read it because of being a Newbery winner. :D I really liked it and it caused me to want to read more in the series, especially the first one "Homecoming".

So far I am finding Defending Jacob by William Landay to be boring. I am finding it difficult to believe (view spoiler) :D All my friends who have read it have said it is a 4-5 star read. I also am reading it as a part of the Goodreads Choice Awards challenge. :)

Maybe part of the problem is I do not really like psychological thrillers.

message 323: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) Well I am sad that I made the mistake of starting this book as it is both blue & historical romance. I thought it would take me a few days to read, but it's really good. Maybe I will try to read slower or something. I think I prefer Maya Banks HR's to her contemporary stuff.

In Bed with a Highlander (McCabe Trilogy, #1) by Maya Banks

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments @ Melissa - It usually takes me awhile to get into a psychological thriller, but I have found that I end up liking many of them.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments For now, here is our theme and list of participants for Team Cerulean (AKA Hobbit Blue). I have posted this on the RaT thread for the moderators, but if you need to change anything, you have until May 8th to let us know. When there was one book you planned that covered the whole page count you said you wanted to read, I noted it for our information only.

Theme: Historical - Read a book that connects to something at least 50 years ago via setting, characters, theme, published date etc.

Turtlecollector 3500
Tea 2000
Jojiwoji 2000
Dee 800(11/22/63 finished during RaT)
Gemma 450(Swimsuit finished during RaT)
Sanz 500(World Without End finished during RaT)
Karen 600
Ezinwanyi 1500
Melissa 1000
md 300
Jenny 300
Team Goal(Total) 12950

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments As we get close to the start of the Read-a-Thon, I would like to remind everyone not to record a book for a few hours before the RaT. This will give the pages count on your stats time to refresh so we can get an accurate count at the start of the RaT. Here is a link to the time so you can see what time that might be in your part of the world. This should be sometime on Wednesday for everyone I believe.

Event World Time Clock

Your page counts will be recorded by me, since I am in the same time zone as the mod, on our team spreadsheet 3 hrs later than this as a backup for the mods. So please wait until after they have been recorded to add more books to your shelves. I will post after I have recorded them.

Only about 36 hrs left to go before the start!

Feel free to keep adding books before then. I hope everyone has been enjoying their books.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Okay Jenny you are all set for now. Your three books are showing up on our team count. Just keep reading and we will work on adding books as you finish them. I think that will be easiest.

Your current book, Sailors of Stonehenge by Manuel Vega , is a perfect book for the Read-a-Thon, just make sure you don't finish it until May 1-11th:) Also, you will need finish another book with at least 140 pgs between May 1st and May 11th to reach the minimum of 300 pgs if you want to participate in the Read-a-Thon.

Don't stress out if later you find out you won't be able to finish. You are not required to participate.

First, you don't need to read them. Yes we get extra points if you do, but we are not forcing you.
If you do, it's one historical and/or one blue cover (2 different books). Rest are your choice.
And don't forget for RaT even books with less than 160 counts, just you can't put them on shelf for this challenge.
